More than anything else it is energy that has enabled the industrial revolution and the high standard of living that is now possible for a large segment of the world's population.
|
|
It is worth remembering that the former Saudi oil minister, Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani famously said, “The Stone Age did not end for lack of stone, and the Oil Age will end long before the world runs out of oil.”
|
|
Tar-sand and fracking operators will be severely tested: frackers in the oil-rich Bakken are producing a gusher of red ink despite falling service costs and continuing technological improvement. Even those North American operators who survive the downturn may lose skittish investors to safer pursuits — such as renewable power, whose lower risks now attract capital several percentage points cheaper than utilities get.

The Demand Side Strikes Again
All this talk of oversupply is lopsided, though, because it leaves out half the supply/demand balance. The tepid global economy, with deflationary pressures in Europe and Japan, slowing growth in China, political gridlock in the U.S., and the gloom of uncertainty everywhere, continues to weigh on oil demand. But so, very importantly, does the invisible “fifth fuel” — energy efficiency, which the International Energy Agency recently found is even bigger than any other fuel.

To the electricity customer, coal is relatively cheap. But missing from the sticker price are coal's major impacts on ecosystems, human health, and our economy.
People are sickened by pollution from coal fired power plants, shortening their lives and burdening the health care system with costly care.
Fish are poisoned when coal mines dump waste into streams, starving their predators, depriving subsistence fishermen, and straining stocks that support commercial fisheries.
Future generations will be heavily impacted by global warming from the carbon dioxide that burning coal spews into the air.
As taxpayers we pay to subsidize coal use and clean up its aftermath.

Prevailing response
Energy has not been on the agenda of the ORDA community, and when it has been proposed, environmental issues have often made progress slow and expensive. Too much energy is used for useless activity in development, meanwhile manual labor is doing a lot of work that machines can do better.
|
A better response
Energy needs to be a priority wherever it is needed in a community to improve production performance. Manual labor constraining productivity should be solved by use of energy. Measuring installed energy capacity is a good metric for relief and development potential.

About the Oil and Gas Climate initiative ... The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative is designed to catalyze practical action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is led by the heads of 10 oil and gas companies that aim to lead the industry response to climate change, OGCI member companies – BP, CNPC, Eni, Pemex, Reliance Industries, Repsol, Saudi Aramco, Shell, Statoil and Total which together represent one fifth of the world’s oil and gas production. The OGCI was established following discussions during the 2014 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, and was officially launched at the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit in New York in September 2014.

Clean Cities strives to reduce U.S. dependence on petroleum. The program’s successes include the following:
■ Clean Cities projects and activities have saved more than 5 billion gallons of petroleum.
■ Clean Cities efforts have helped place more than 400,000 alternative fuel vehicles on the road and helped develop the fueling infrastructure to support them.
■ In 2012 alone, Clean Cities activities helped to avert more than 6.6 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
■ Over the program’s 21-year history, the number of local Clean Cities coalitions has grown from six in 1993 to nearly 100 today, representing about three-quarters of the U.S. population.
■ Nationwide, nearly 18,000 stakeholders in the public and private sectors count themselves as members in a local Clean Cities coalition.
■ Through the ARRA, Clean Cities supported 25 local and regional transportation projects with $300 million in federal funding, which in turn leveraged more than $500 million in investments by public- and private-sector partners.

● Investors are trying to understand what the valuation impacts of stranded assets could be on their holdings and whether these are material risks or not.
● The Bloomberg Carbon Risk Valuation Tool (CRVT), available on the Bloomberg Professional service at XLTP XCO2, offers a starting point to illustrate the potential impact on earnings and share price of companies, particularly those in extractive industries, under carbon pollution constraints.
● The tool offers five pre-built scenarios, plus the ability to adjust assumptions. The scenarios provide the ability to apply some of the ways in which stranded asset risks could manifest themselves.

US crude oil imports
US imports of crude oil expanded rapidly in the 1970s. The likely cause of this was the profit potential of crude oil resources all over the world resulting from the OPEC driven cartelization of oil prices and the race by the major oil companies (including those based in the United States) to gain market share in the new world global oil order.
Imports declined in the late 1970s early 1980s as the economy in the US deteriorated, but then increased again as the US economy started to grow and Americans became accustomed to a higher price regime for gasoline.
Post 2000, imports of crude oil have declined. Part of this is due to the increased production of natural gas and domestic crude oil as a result of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) which has the potential to make the US independed of imported energy.

Electricity from the Lamu project is expected to have a much lower market price than current prices, selling for about US$0.08/kWh (8 UScents/kWh or 80 US$/MWh). But this doesn’t include the costs of pollution, including greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2). When these are factored in, the full price of coal-fired electricity is much less attractive.
According to the Lamu project’s environmental and social impact assessment, the Lamu facility will produce about 8.8 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity each year. The assessment also states that each MWh of electricity from this type of plant results in one ton of carbon dioxide – making a total of 8.8 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
