OVERVIEW / THE ARC OF HISTORY
THERE ARE MANY IMPORTANT FACTORS THAT INTERACT IN COMPLEX WAYS
There is progress, but at the same time the progress has been rather modest compared to what is technically possible. There are thousands of issues that have not been addressed and far too many constraints on efficiency and rapid progress. Very few people in leadership positions seem to understand the complexity of the system and its amazing possibilities.

ISSUE ... INADEQUATE METRICS
YOU MANAGE WHAT YOU MEASURE ... THEREFORE MEASURE WHAT MATTERS
Profits. money wealth, stock prices and GDP growth are measures that work for owners, but less so for everyone else. They are inadequate because they only consider the economic or financial dimension of the system, ignoring society and ignoring nature and the environment. There are many issues including the way accounting has been gamed to allow reporting that would normally not be allowed if the basic fundamental principles of double entry accoutancy were being applied.
We need better metrics for everything that is important in the socio-enviro-economic system. We need metrics to enable people to make better decisions so that the performance of the complex enviro-socio-economic is as good as possible. There are many different approaches to better metrics and many different actors involved in research and development of better metrics.
There is a mistaken idea that more organizational profit results in better quality of life when more profit is often achieved with less payroll and there is a related drop in quality of life. Less spending on pollution control may result in higher profits, but it comes at the expense of more pullution and assiated bad impacts.
PROFITS, MONEY WEALTH, STOCK PRICES and GDP GROWTH are inadequate metrics as they only consider the economic or financial dimension of the system, ignoring society and ignoring nature and the environment. We need better metrics for everything that is important. We need metrics to enable people to make better decisions so that the performance of the complex enviro-socio-economic is as good as possible.

THE SOCIO-ENVIRO-ECONOMIC SYSTEM
SYSTEM COMPRISING PEOPLE, NATURE AND PEOPLE BUILT STRUCTURES AND SYSTEMS
This is a very complex system, and very powerful but almost impossible to manage. There is amazing potential and existential risks. The challenge is to optimize decision making on top of a very complex system. The mathematics suggests that this cannot be done successfully, especially using the 'top-down' decision making that has been the norm throughout history. However, something vastly better than what exists today is possible, and a strating point for this is more appropriate meaningful metrics.

MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES ... NOT JUST ONE
FOR PEOPLE ... IN SOCIETY ... IN A PLACE ... FOR AN ORGANIZATION ... FOR NATURAL SYSTEMS ... ETC
In a very complex interconnected system it is important to look at progress and performance from all the different possible perspectives. Since decisions usually result in outcomes that impact different elements of the system in different ways, keeping track of progress and performance from all perspectives is essential. This is missing from conventional accounting that is limited to the perspective of the reporting entity.

AMAZING TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS SHOULD BE THE BASIS FOR AMAZING SOCIAL PROGRESS
In some ways there has been amazing social progress, but there is still a lot to be done. There is a huge underutilized potential to use technology for GOOD, but in the main it the power of technology is used mainly for MONEY. Change the way the metrics are done, and we will change the way the decisions are made! The power of knowledge and technology has the potential to make the world a better place, but this won't happen unless it is managed in a good way.

SYSTEMIC DYSFUNCTION OF EXISTING METRICS
EXISTING METRICS NO LONGER RESULT IN OPTIMAL DECISION MAKING
This is a foundational systemic problem that must be resolved. There is an unhealthy focus on increasing profit for owners without taking into consideration the related impact on society and the environment cannot work and will certainly result in two critical existential threats (1) the inability of the environment to sustain humanity in the way we have become accustomed; and (2) social unrest that cannot be constrained.

TRUE VALUE IMPACT ACCOUNTING (TVIA)
GOOD METRICS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR DECISION MAKING ... FOR ACCOUNTING AND ACCOUNTABILITY.
There is amazing technology but mostly used simply to enable the accumulation of money wealth without taking into account the impact of economic transactions on people, society, nature and the environment.
True Value Impact Accounting (TVIA) builds on the core concepts of conventional double entry accounting and management accounting.
TVIA is a system for the measurement and reporting of impact on all the capitals based on conventional accounting, but designed to suit the modern complex world in a way that is both simple, easy to understand, easy to use and powerful. The system is designed to measure everything that really matters. It embraces some of the powerful concepts of double entry accounting and applies them not only to money transactions but to everything important not transacted in money.
A modern system of accounting and accountabilty should be based on the concept of double entry accounting together with the idea that ALL components of the system should be subject to a universal and uniform framework of measurement that takes everything into consideration.

OTHER INITIATIVES TO DEVELOP BETTER METRICS
Many organization recognize that it is important to measure a lot more than the only the money dimension of the socio-enviro-economic system, and there are many complex measures that are being used to understand how the various bits of the system work.
Many of these initiatives are very good, but there is no framework to make it easy to report on the performance of the system as a whole. In the absence of such a framework, the default measure becomes the prevailing money wealth based set.
While there are many different approaches to better metrics and many different actors involved in research and development of better metrics, none seem to have the bigger goal of a better universal, coherent, comprehensive framework of measurement.

BANKING AND THE FINANCIAL SERVICES SECTOR / CAPITAL MARKETS
There are thousands of ISSUES specific to the banking and financial services sector
Since the 1980s, financial capital has grown at an impressive compound rate ... in large part because it is the only part of the socio-enviro-economic system with a coherent set of metrics for financial performance.
The nature of finance and investment has changed over the years. Physical assets have lower importance in financial thinking now than in the past. Anything that earns profit has investment value not matter what its related value destruction (which is not measured in conventional metrics).
Money is important for QUALITY of LIFE, not per se, but in order to pay bills. This must come from money income (jobs/employment) or accumulated money wealth
There are thousands of ORGANIZATIONS that provide banking and financial services, the essential ecosystem of money, banking and finance.
|
|
|
The BANKING and FINANCIAL SERVICES SECTOR
The SECTOR that makes up the banking and financial services industry has become huge and complex. The sector provides the essential ecosystem to enable flows of money and securities. The sector has become immensely profitable (which is measured) but perhaps not very valuable (which is not measured)!
In some ways there is competition and markets, but there are also parts of the system that are a monopoly either because of regulation or simply the structure of the industry

FINANCIAL CAPITAL
For the very wealthy FINANCIAL CAPITAL is toy ... and a game. A small amount of financial capital is very valuable for people in the middle class ... but the value is quite different for those with substantial wealth.
The accumulation of financial wealth has been a 'goal' in life for many people who have become educated in the last two or three generations. Whether this has resulted in happiness and a better quality of life is not as obvious as it was expected to be.

COST OF LIVING
Life is impossible without incurring costs ... the costs of living. There are many different standards of living, each with different associated costs.
For a long time, a 'better' quality of life was associated with more consumption and a higher cost of living. This correlation was valid when people had less than the optimum for a decent quality of life, and in this situation more was better. But when basic needs are satisfied, and some luxuries are owned, more gets less and less important ... and too much starts to be a burden.
Not enough money to pay for the costs of living is a very bad situation and one that is faced by too many people. For most people a 'job' is the source of money, and too many people either do not have a job, or have a job that does not pay a decent living wage.
This problem is not solved by enabling consumer credit, but does enable people to consume beyond their means. During the past 40 years the balance sheet of American families has been weakened dramatically ... and then made even worse when the banking and housing crisis diminished real estate values for millions of middle class families.

ISSUES with MONEY BASED METRICS and FINANCIAL ENGINEERING
There are many issues with conventional money based performance indicators. The PROFIT metric is very powerful but it is calculated without taking into account the damage done by business activity on society and the environment. Also STOCK PRICES are a measure that strongly correlates to profit performance, even thuogh profits ignore social and environmental externalities. Money is used as the unit of measure, even though money has not intrinsic value but is simply the result of market forces and 'trust'.
Progress in the modern economy has been measured in terms of financial wealth. Corporate performance is also measured in terms of its contribution to financial wealth whether or not through stock market values. Money metrics are at the core of most modern economic analysis and this is one of the reasons why the modern economy has become seriously dysfunctional in many ways. The financial metrics ignore all externalities that relate to people/society and planet/environment.
Money has ancient origins ... but is being used in the modern world in many ways that are little understood and potentially very dangerous. PROFIT is the conventional measure of business performance, but it is insufficient for the modern world in the 21st century.

MODERN KNOWLEDGE IS AMAZING - BUT COULD BE USED BETTER
Knowledge is the result of study, research and learning. Knowledge is a critical enabling factor for the efficient functioning of the modern enviro-socio-economic system. Knowledge has increased very rapidly in the past century, and there are massive amounts of new knowledge every day. The challenge is to use this knowledge in the most valuable and positive way for the benefit of society, This has not been the experience over the past fifty years, and has to change. There is a huge amount of knowledge now compared to the past, and it is growing exponentially. The question is whether or not knowledge will be used for good or ill.
