HOW ELSE COULD TRUMP GET ELECTED From QUORA: The American electorate is not very bright! Original article: | |||||||||

QUESTION: Why do people say that American consumers pay for tariffs when, in reality, foreign countries absorb the cost, and the U.S. government benefits by collecting the extra 25%? Why do they insist that this is not the case? ANSWER: from Gene Taylor ... Former Call Center Tech Consultant at Airliners (2010–2017) ... Jul 4 2025 Simple example- I wanted a Greenworks hedge trimmer. It was advertised on Amazon and locally at Walmart for $150. The hedge trimmer was made in China. Amazon indicated that they only had 5 of the trimmer in stock. At the last minute, I decided to wait a little bit. One week later, it showed no stock at all. So I waited a little bit more! When the trimmer again appeared on Amazon’s website, it was $215. Again, it was from China. I, a consumer paid an extra $65 because of the tariffs placed on the new supply of trimmers. Which means before me, the importer paid the US government the 25% tariff, which was passed onto Walmart, which of course added a little bit more profit. Then that was passed on to me! Every economist has told you that the importer pays the tariff. Small businesses that buy from China have told you that the importer pays the tariff. Yet somehow, in your mind, you ‘intentionally’ want to think that the foreign government (China in this case), pays the tariff. Either you are totally uneducated, Trump delusional, or just too stubborn to realize that a man who has bankrupted casinos, stiffed contractors, cheated on wives, lied to you, again and again! We are paying more, the government is getting more and with this budget bill, that extra money is going to ‘billionaires and corporations’, while Medicare cuts hit millions of Americans. Simply stated, I know that it is hard to accept, but you are WRONG! Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I decided to archive this QUoRA item mainly because it is a good example of the super-dumb America and helps to explain how a President as bad as Trump can get elected. I think it was Prime Minister Gladstone in the UK during the reign of Queen Victoria who opined that a 'universal franchise' in which all adults ... back then actually all male adults ... were able to vote. Gladstone was an advocate for some qualification for voting like the ownership of property. Everyone getting to have a vote has delivered Trump ... twice. Something better should be possible. It certainy is needed. Worse ... many Americans are disgusted at the state of politics, but rather than thinking through what to do about it, they are 'shutting down' and avoiding anything and everything to do with politics. To a considerable extent this is what happened in the last election cycle and the result was the election of Trump. Big mistake! Peter Burgess |
