  • Hello everyone, welcome back. I'm going
  • to jump right to the headlines in this
  • video and as you can see above me,
  • reported on CNN, Trump announces new
  • additional 25% tariff on India as
  • punishment for importing Russian oil,
  • which would bring the tariff level on
  • India up to 50%. And as reported here on
  • CBC, India and Russia hit back. And in a
  • show of unity, the prime minister of
  • India and the leader of the opposition
  • in India vowed to continue purchasing
  • Russian oil. Now, in this video, I'm not
  • going to go through those articles and
  • talk about the rhetoric and the spin and
  • the reasons that each country is doing
  • what they're doing. I'm going to
  • concentrate on what the effect will be
  • for the United States, which will be
  • negative, and what the effect will be on
  • Canada, which will be a positive. I'm
  • going to give you an analysis of what's
  • going to happen economically,
  • mathematically. And as I go through
  • this, I want you to understand that in
  • no way should my comments be construed
  • as support for Russia. I'm Canadian and
  • >br>
  • 1:00
  • we are in 100% support with Ukraine on
  • this issue. But let's go through how
  • this is going to affect the United
  • States and Canada economically by
  • looking at math. It's amazing how
  • powerful numbers are. These particular
  • numbers are taken from the US government
  • website. This is the US trade in goods
  • with India in 2024. And you can see
  • imports and exports. The United States
  • exported and these numbers are in
  • millions of dollars. So 41.5 billion and
  • they imported approximately 87 billion
  • worth of goods from India into the
  • United States. So right now, Donald
  • Trump has taken the position that he's
  • going to punish India for buying Russian
  • oil by imposing what has amounted to a
  • 50% tariff. 50% of 87 billion is
  • approximately $42 billion. And what this
  • means is if US consumers and companies
  • continue to import $87 billion of Indian
  • goods, they will pay approximately $42
  • >br>
  • 2:02
  • billion in taxes to take possession of
  • those goods. Now, because of such a high
  • tariff, demand for these imports may
  • fall in the US as importers may be
  • reluctant to want to pay that extra 50%
  • and this will hurt the Indian companies
  • that export these goods to the United
  • States. But the goods that US importers
  • continue to import from India will be
  • subject to this new Trump tariff tax.
  • What are these products? Well, we can go
  • to this trading economic site and they
  • summarize what the products are.
  • Electrical and electronic equipment,
  • pearls, precious stones, metals, coins,
  • pharmaceutical products, machinery,
  • nuclear reactors, boilers, minerals,
  • fuels, oils, distillate products,
  • articles of iron and steel, other made
  • textile articles, vehicles other than
  • railway and tramway, organic chemicals,
  • articles of apparel, fish, crustations,
  • plastic, miscellaneous chemical
  • products, carpets and other textile
  • floor covering, furniture, lighting
  • signs, pre-fabricated buildings, stone,
  • plaster, cement, asbestous, micica,
  • >br>
  • 3:00
  • similar similar minerals, rubbers,
  • optical, photo technical and medical
  • apparatus, aluminum, articles of
  • leather, animal gut, harness, travel
  • goods, iron and steel, essential oils.
  • Are there any oils that are really
  • essential? The list goes on and on and
  • on. The US imports lots of things from
  • India. Now, that's the background. Okay,
  • but let me get into the analysis. Why
  • did I say this is going to be bad for
  • the United States and good for Canada?
  • Let me change the background here and
  • show a beautiful Canadian background
  • picture and we'll discuss that.
  • what Donald Trump is doing. Remember,
  • he's the guy that during the campaign
  • said, 'I'll settle the war in Ukraine in
  • one day. In fact, on inauguration day,
  • I'll just give Vladimir Putin a call.
  • He's a good friend of mine. We have a
  • really good relationship and I'll make a
  • deal and the war will be over in one
  • day.' Do you remember the ridiculous
  • rhetoric? Well, now we're 6 months on
  • and Vladimir Putin has realized that
  • Donald Trump speaks out of his ass and
  • he's completely humiliated Donald Trump
  • and escalated the war in Ukraine. And he
  • >br>
  • 4:01
  • has been able to do that mainly for one
  • reason, and it's this. When Russia
  • started the war versus Ukraine, the
  • Western world, mainly NATO and
  • like-minded countries, responded by
  • helping Ukraine by supplying weapons and
  • money and sanctioning Russia. and most
  • of the western world worked together to
  • impose massive sanctions against Russia.
  • And they felt that this would
  • Russia, their economy and stop
  • their ability to fund the war. Europe
  • cut off the import of Russian energy and
  • countries around the world uh introduce
  • massive sanctions against Russia, much
  • more draconian, a thousand times worse
  • than say the tariffs that the United
  • States has recently imposed on Canada.
  • So, how was Russia continuing to be able
  • to fight this war and even escalate the
  • war as they are right now? They simply
  • pivoted, called other allies and
  • friends, China and India being the two
  • big ones, and just made deals with them
  • >br>
  • 5:01
  • and they pivoted from uh selling most of
  • their energy to Europe to selling most
  • of their energy to China and India. In
  • fact, here's a graph of the Russian
  • ruble from when Donald Trump took office
  • to present. And you can see that in
  • January, one US dollar would buy you 97
  • Russian rubles. And now that same US
  • dollar will buy you 79 Russian rubles.
  • The Russian ruble has appreciated about
  • 25% versus the US dollar just in the
  • last 6 months. So even though Donald
  • Trump during the campaign told you that
  • he would end the war with just a phone
  • call, now what he's doing is he's going
  • to charge US citizens attacks to try and
  • punish India to try and convince India
  • to stop importing Russian oil. India is
  • not going to stop importing Russian oil.
  • The one thing that's going to happen for
  • sure to the very people that believe
  • Trump, oh, I'll end the war in one day.
  • What's going to happen to them for sure
  • is if they work for a company who relies
  • >br>
  • 6:01
  • on importing a lot of their materials
  • from India, they may get laid off as
  • that company can't afford to keep
  • importing those things if they cost 50%
  • more. Now, any consumer who is buying
  • things that some American companies are
  • using Indian inputs for is going to find
  • that those things will cost more. Now,
  • the pendulum has just swung the other
  • way. Rather than sanctioning Russia
  • directly, Donald Trump now is going to
  • tax his own citizens to try and put
  • pressure, geopolitical pressure on India
  • and he's all by himself. The United
  • States is all by themselves doing it.
  • Why are they by themselves? Now think
  • about this. If the United States had
  • friends and allies that they were
  • trading with, that they had good working
  • relationships with, maybe they could
  • have discussed a multinational plan,
  • perhaps getting Canada and Japan and
  • Australia and all of Europe to go
  • together versus India to punish India to
  • put pressure on India to stop them
  • >br>
  • 7:00
  • buying Russian oil. But Donald Trump
  • doesn't distinguish between enemies and
  • allies. He's having a trade war versus
  • all the countries that he would need.
  • now that the United States would need to
  • help them in this endeavor. There won't
  • be any countries on earth stepping
  • forward and saying we're going to join
  • the United States and put pressure on
  • India. We too will impose tariffs on
  • India and stop them from importing
  • Russian oil. That might have been the
  • case had the US not been so hostile and
  • threatened the whole world and impose
  • tariffs on the whole world. The whole
  • world is busy having their own fight
  • with the United States. The United
  • States is alone in this. Donald Trump is
  • making his citizens foot the total bill
  • with this new geopolitical attack on
  • India. India could pivot their exports
  • as well. We're talking about $80 billion
  • in exports. Maybe China will step in and
  • just import more goods from India. Maybe
  • the BRICS nations will start working
  • more closely together as the US keeps
  • >br>
  • 8:00
  • ramping up this tariff assault on the
  • whole world. basically going it alone
  • and becoming more and more and more
  • isolated. And I said this would be
  • positive for Canada. Let me explain that
  • now. Positive in an indirect way. And
  • I've always made the point that Canada
  • is in a very good position to fight this
  • trade war because time is on our side.
  • And the reasons are these. Canada too
  • can pivot its exports to other countries
  • and form new trade alliances. We all
  • know that the Canadian people are also
  • galvanized in working together, choosing
  • Canada, boycotting US products, not
  • visiting the United States. We all know
  • that. But a key factor is that Canada is
  • fighting one trade war versus only the
  • United States. The rest of the world can
  • be our customers and our friends. The
  • United States is fighting a trade war
  • now with everybody. And as they keep
  • escalating these tariffs on allies and
  • enemies and everyone, the American
  • people are going to be stuck with the
  • bill. Every other day, he keeps
  • announcing more and more tariffs. He
  • >br>
  • 9:01
  • keeps on his own desk. And the
  • pile of is getting higher and
  • higher and higher. And the only people
  • that are going to have to eat this
  • are Americans. And I know that the
  • natural reaction for a noncritically
  • thinking person would be, well, the US
  • doesn't need India. We don't need their
  • imports. And I'm going to stop right
  • here to tell you that's completely not
  • true. And the evidence is just the fact
  • that the US is importing these things in
  • the first place. The economy is working
  • as efficiently as it can in whatever
  • circumstance it finds itself in. And
  • right now, for whatever reason, United
  • States companies are importing about $80
  • billion of goods from India. Why are
  • they doing that? because they feel that
  • that's the most effective way to spend
  • those $80 billion. If there was an
  • option, if they could source those
  • materials within the United States for
  • less than 80 billion, they would do
  • that. But they're not doing that. Oh,
  • well, we don't need India. We need to
  • >br>
  • 10:01
  • punish India. We'll just get that stuff
  • somewhere else. Now, that would be a
  • good option if those products were
  • available from, say, another country in
  • the world. But guess what? The United
  • States has tariffs on every country.
  • There is no other option. If they want
  • to try and get those products from
  • anyone else, there's tariffs on them,
  • too. The United States has just painted
  • themselves into a corner. They're
  • completely isolated. They have no
  • friends. They have no other options.
  • Everything they import from everywhere
  • in the world now will cost more. So,
  • time is on Canada's side. Canada can
  • continue to diversify and probably even
  • increase trade with India and just
  • ignore the US as it continues to go down
  • this path of destroying its own economy.
  • And as the US economic position will
  • weaken and get worse in the future over
  • time, the US will have a greater
  • incentive to do a deal and Canada will
  • have a better chance of getting a better
  • deal when the US MCA comes up for
  • renewal next year. Canada just needs to
  • >br>
  • 11:01
  • take its time now and let the US
  • continue to make blunderously disastrous
  • trade decisions. Eventually, the United
  • States may realize that it needs a
  • solid, reliable source of some important
  • inputs to their economy like potsh,
  • steel, aluminum, electricity, oil, and
  • gas, which are very easy to get from
  • Canada. And in the meantime, Americans
  • that think, well, you don't need
  • anybody. You don't need India. You don't
  • need Canada. You don't need Europe. you
  • don't need the whole world. Well, you're
  • supporting a guy whose solution to that
  • is to just make you pay more for all the
  • stuff that you get from the rest of the
  • world. Now, almost every sophisticated
  • American company that produces things
  • sources products from all over the world
  • and all those products will cost more.
  • And Donald Trump is making his citizens
  • pay the bill for these tariffs. Trump's
  • tariff tax that Americans are going to
  • have to pay. And I guarantee that what's
  • going to happen in the future is you'll
  • hear a speech or a comment from Donald
  • >br>
  • 12:00
  • Trump that the United States has to
  • handle this all on our own. We have to
  • be the guys that are handling the Russia
  • situation. We have to save the whole
  • world and no one in the world wants to
  • help us. The rest of the world is
  • getting a free ride. Maybe we should
  • punish them more. And the fact of the
  • matter is there's really no country in
  • the rest of the world that's in a
  • position to or would want to enter into
  • a trade war with India now to help out
  • the United States. we have our own trade
  • war with the United States that we have
  • to worry about. So once again, another
  • policy from the US administration that's
  • completely not thought through. They're
  • not looking past the end of their nose,
  • and they're going to live with the
  • consequences. And I'm telling you that
  • the consequences for the United States
  • are going to be more taxes, higher
  • prices, less jobs, and the consequences
  • for Canada and the rest of the world are
  • let's just wait and let them degrade
  • their economy. and eventually they may
  • decide that they need the rest of the
  • world to buy some products reliably and
  • more cheaply. So, I thought I'd close
  • with this picture. I think this is the
  • >br>
  • 13:01
  • best one that's been posted on the I
  • Choose Canada page so far. Beautiful
  • picture of the Canadian Rockies. It
  • looks like she's just ready to jump in
  • that water and cool off.
