NEWS FROM THEHILL RISING .... FEBRUARY 28TH 2025 Original article: https://thehill.com/hilltv/rising/5168822-rising-february-28-2025/ Peter Burgess COMMENTARY Donald Trump is an old man. I am even older. We are both 'stuck' in our ways. Since I stopped doing 'paid' consultancy quite a long time ago, I have been able to indulge myself in trying better to understand 'how the world works' and the more I learn the more I am concerned. I am now 85 years old, and getting a lot of motivation from trying to understand the decisions and threads that got the world from where it was in 1945 to where it is today in 2025! A 'big thing' in the 1930s was a thing called National Socialism. This was a worldwide movement with a lot of powerful followers, and, of course, gave rise to Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany. There was some prominent people in this movement in both the United States and in the UK. There was a huge realignment of national power as a result of World War II with the United States becoming the dominant world power. Though Great Britain was not on the losing side in the war, it probably lost more than any other country in almost every domain. In the 19th and 20th centuries Britain and France were significant colonial powers and there was considerable socio-economic progress during this era, albeit some serious problems when looked at through a 21st century lens. On balance, there was a huge amount of positive progress. In both WWI and WWII, Germany was the loser and Britain and France were both on the winning side ... but seriously weakened in almost every aspect of national importance. Essentially every country has had to 'be friends' to the United States since 1946. As a result of WWII, the United States had become the richest country in history, and every country had to 'play nice' in order to be on the good side of US policy. Looking back on the collaboration between the United States and its 'allies' over the past 80 years ... the US has given rather little away. In fact, the US has tended to be on the winning side, no matter what! The US had most of the cards, and played them mostly at the expense of the other party. But when you look at the way the United States has deployed its power over the past 80 years, the track record is abysmal. What exactly has the USA won as a result of its immense military power? Well yes ... South Korea was a win, except that North Korea was split off and became a separate nation! China ... in 1947 there was Mau, and now under Xi China has a bigger economy than the USA (depends a bit on how the counting is dome!) Vietnam ... not exactly a win for the United States Middle East ... the US not calling the shots any more Europe ... seems like the present US leadership prefers Russia! North America ... even Canada and Mexico are being threatened by the present US leadership With Trump as President for the second time, the United States has become the laughing stock for most of the western world. But worse, President Trump is negotiating ... whatever that really means ... so that the USA 'wins more'. Trump may be good at 'make belief' negotiations on Reality TV, but in the real world he is truly quite third rate! The Oval Office meeting with Zelinsky on Friday February 28th made Trump, Vance and America look like petulent little children ... with little brains and poor judgement. Let's get rid of Trump and his whole entourage as soon as possible before they do even more damage to the USA and the Free Western World Peter Burgess | |||||||||
