The media is an important part of a healthy society.
Over the past two or three decades the capacity of the 'media' to serve as a monitor of bad behavior has been seriously compromised ... that is bad behavior in society, bad behavior at the national and international level, bad behavior within and between corporations, bad behavior with resepct to the environment and climate!
Since 1980 there has been a growing emphasis on the idea that bigger and bigger profits should be the main goal of every activity that people engage in.
In my view this is a path to disaster. I cannot understand why people 'en-masse' do not see this. There have been record corporate profits and record high stock market results, yet people seem to be at record levels of unhappiness. How can this be?
Part of the problem is that most economic and social statistics have been 'gamed' by thos at the top, and very few in the general population are able to understand that they are being 'conned'!
The Guardian is a good newspaper and one of relatively few that still operate. Thank goodness for this.
