- and you're now watching Action News at
- 11 our breaking number breaking coverage
- continues tonight on that Learjet 55
- that crashed in Northeast Philadelphia a
- bit after 6 o' we know tonight six
- individuals have lost their lives I'm
- shie Williams alongside grey Hall thank
- you for joining us and being here with
- us in this continuing breaking news
- coverage we've been on the air now since
- about 7:15 this evening here live on the
- air the crash itself though was reported
- shortly after 6:00 let's bring you up to
- speed as to everything we have learned
- so far this evening it was shortly after
- 6:00 when this ljet 55 it crashed after
- departing from the Northeast
- Philadelphia Airport we're told that
- there were six people on board this lar
- jet the plane was in route to
- Springfield Branson national airport in
- Missouri this was a medical assignment
- tonight this was a jet being used as an
- air ambulance we now know that on board
- was was a pediatric patient being taken
- 1:02
- care of by
- Shriner Hospital of Philadelphia we also
- know on board with that pediatric
- patient was the mother of that child
- those two the mother and the child were
- being transported back to their home
- country of Mexico that was the ultimate
- destination uh maybe Missouri was going
- to be a part of their Journey as they
- make their way down to uh Mexico
- Shriner's children uh putting out a
- statement just in the last 25 30 minutes
- and it reads in part that Shriner's
- children's is heartbroken to confirm
- that one of our pediatric patients and
- the child's mother were aboard the jet
- rescue air ambulance that crashed in
- Philadelphia this evening but because of
- patient privacy and concerns they're not
- saying more about the patient's Identity
- or the patient's family that of of
- course is understandable but this lets
- 2:01
- us know that these families that were
- impacted by the crash are being notified
- and next of Ken is being notified of the
- crash tonight their statement goes on to
- say our hearts and prayers go out to the
- families of the medical crew and pilots
- who were also lost in this tragic event
- we should also mention that there were
- other injuries on the ground tonight
- that we're getting confirmation about
- Temple Jean Hospital saying that it
- received six patients three we've
- learned have been released three are
- said to be in fair condition tonight and
- as we talk about this tragedy um let's
- talk about the distance of the airport
- about four miles away from where it went
- down we know this plane was in the air
- for about 30 seconds before it went down
- so it was in the air a short amount of
- time uh we know something horribly went
- wrong exactly what that was we don't
- know but we know investigators will
- begin their investigation and it will
- take some time before we know that
- 3:01
- action news reporter Annie McCormack
- 3:02
- she's been live for us at Northeast
- 3:04
- Philadelphia Airport covering the
- 3:07
- situation there and talking to her
- 3:09
- sources Annie what are you hearing more
- 3:11
- about this breaking
- 3:13
- situation yeah well great we do know
- 3:15
- that that jet rescue air ambulance did
- 3:17
- take off from Runway 24 here at
- 3:20
- Northeast Airport just after 6:00 and
- 3:23
- was only in the air for a very brief
- 3:26
- amount of time the company saying that
- 3:29
- the C crash happened in about 25 past
- 3:32
- six that is when the crash did occur of
- 3:35
- course with six people on board
- 3:38
- including that young patient the
- 3:39
- patient's mother a patient of Shriner
- 3:42
- hospital and also the medic staff on
- 3:45
- board and the pilots as well we can tell
- 3:48
- you that when we arrived here uh we were
- 3:52
- able to see a number of federal
- 3:54
- investigators responding uh Governor
- 3:56
- Shapiro did confirm that four invest
- 3:59
- instigators from the FAA and four from
- 4:02
- the NTSB were dispatched out here we saw
- 4:06
- them load up there seemed to be a
- 4:08
- meeting inside and then they took off
- 4:11
- presumably to go to the crash site
- 4:13
- there's a couple things that they're
- 4:15
- going to be looking at as with any crash
- 4:17
- they're going to be looking at weather
- 4:19
- conditions those in the aviation
- 4:20
- Community have explained to me that
- 4:22
- these types of jets do have different
- 4:25
- instruments that are able to be used in
- 4:29
- weather conditions that might be a
- 4:31
- little bit rougher than a normal plane
- 4:34
- it depends on the type of instruments
- 4:35
- but because this is a medic jet they
- 4:37
- have those instruments that rain may not
- 4:39
- be too much of a problem for them
- 4:41
- they're going to be looking at a number
- 4:43
- of other things including the
- 4:44
- Transmissions you heard the aviation
- 4:46
- expert talk about that you also heard
- 4:48
- him talk about how he anticipated that
- 4:51
- the plane was supposed to make a left
- 4:52
- turn and it did not they're going to be
- 4:54
- looking at the fuel I'm told that
- 4:56
- already tonight shortly after the crash
- 4:58
- occurred that they were checking the
- 5:00
- fuel out here one of the things they
- 5:01
- were checking to see whether or not any
- 5:03
- water maybe from the inclement weather
- 5:05
- got into that fuel that's one thing I'm
- 5:07
- told is protocol when this all happens
- 5:10
- the other thing that many people are
- 5:12
- curious about is with the engine was
- 5:15
- this an engine failure situation there
- 5:17
- is still so much to go through of course
- 5:21
- officials on all levels are coming
- 5:24
- together tonight to work on this mayor
- 5:26
- Charelle Parker said this a short time
- 5:28
- ago
- 5:30
- let me start by thanking uh each of you
- 5:33
- for being here I want to go through some
- 5:36
- basic facts about what we know for
- 5:40
- certain right now an
- 5:43
- aircraft went down in the vicinity of
- 5:46
- Roosevelt Mall on Cotman
- 5:49
- Avenue this occurred shortly after 6:00
- 5:53
- p.m. this
- 5:55
- evening as of right now we have no
- 5:58
- reports on the number of fatalities so
- 6:02
- right now we're just asking for prayers
- 6:04
- for any and everyone who may have been
- 6:07
- affected we do want to note that several
- 6:11
- dwellings and vehicles were impacted so
- 6:15
- what are we asking you to do for us
- 6:17
- right now Philadelphia we're urging you
- 6:20
- to please stay away from the scene if
- 6:25
- you see debris call 911 don't touch
- 6:29
- anything this is still an active scene
- 6:33
- under investigation I'm proud to note
- 6:35
- that all of our federal and state
- 6:38
- Partners they are either in root here or
- 6:41
- on the ground with us right now we did
- 6:44
- some see some neighbors who live in the
- 6:47
- surrounding Community just stay in your
- 6:51
- home again it's still an active scene
- 6:54
- and it's under investigation this is
- 6:56
- only the first of many briefings I'm
- 6:59
- sure to come on this evening and of
- 7:02
- course when daylight comes when we have
- 7:04
- more uh facts and information to share
- 7:07
- with you uh but I do want to say a
- 7:09
- special thank you right now again to all
- 7:12
- of our federal and state partners and
- 7:15
- our amazing First Responders right here
- 7:18
- in the city of Philadelphia uh uh our
- 7:21
- fire our EMS our police department they
- 7:25
- have been here working vigorously to
- 7:29
- ensure that we get this perimeter and
- 7:32
- the surrounding area blocked off to
- 7:35
- ensure that we make Public Safety and
- 7:37
- Health our number one priority so we
- 7:40
- don't have any further information to
- 7:42
- share at this time I've spoken to our
- 7:45
- governor Josh Shapiro he is in rot I've
- 7:47
- spoken to our US senator uh John fedman
- 7:51
- other uh Federal officials uh and
- 7:54
- everyone all hands on deck that's where
- 7:57
- we are right now thank you so very much
- 7:59
- and we will have more information to
- 7:59
- and we will have more information to
- 8:00
- report in the near
- 8:04
- future now I'm talking just about the
- 8:06
- federal investigation this is going to
- 8:08
- be a huge undertaking for those
- 8:10
- investigators just to give you some
- 8:12
- perspective if there is a crash crashes
- 8:14
- we've covered in the past that happened
- 8:16
- in more of a rural area they have that
- 8:19
- area where there's not a lot else going
- 8:20
- on there so in a way the crash scene is
- 8:23
- a little bit more contained but when you
- 8:25
- have it at Cotman in the boulevard with
- 8:28
- residences and the
- 8:30
- it is such a wide breath of area that
- 8:33
- they're going to have to collect all of
- 8:35
- that debris of course the black box is
- 8:37
- something that they're already going to
- 8:39
- check but to collect all of that debris
- 8:41
- we've been told in the past by the NTSB
- 8:44
- investigators when we've been on these
- 8:45
- types of scenes before that they have to
- 8:48
- basically take everything reconstruct it
- 8:50
- so this is normally would take about two
- 8:53
- years for an entire investigation so
- 8:55
- this will take a lengthy amount of time
- 8:58
- for now we're live at the Northeast
- 8:59
- airport and
- 9:01
- mcor okay Annie thanks for your
- 9:03
- reporting uh throughout this evening and
- 9:06
- all of the updates you've brought us in
- 9:07
- regards to the FAA and the NTSB and
- 9:11
- their work that's cut out for them yeah
- 9:13
- we are continuing to hear about the
- 9:16
- injuries and the fatalities tonight uh
- 9:18
- so far we know six individuals have lost
- 9:20
- their lives um they were all on that
- 9:23
- Lear jet 55 that went down there in
- 9:26
- Northeast Philadelphia we heard um four
- 9:28
- crew m MERS were on this particular
- 9:31
- plane a pediatric patient and her mother
- 9:34
- they were patients with Shriners
- 9:36
- Shriners releasing a statement talking
- 9:37
- about their heartbreak tonight so
- 9:39
- devastating we also know uh that Temple
- 9:42
- jeans Hospital received six patients
- 9:44
- three released three said to be in fair
- 9:47
- condition tonight um presumably that
- 9:49
- number will go up throughout the night
- 9:52
- we also heard from the Children's
- 9:54
- Hospital Philadelphia saying that none
- 9:55
- of its patients were on board that plane
- 9:57
- and the flight was not affiliated with
- 9:59
- its hospital so that good news for the
- 10:01
- Children's Hospital Philadelphia tonight
- 10:03
- we want to go now to action news
- 10:05
- reporter Brianna Smith who has been
- 10:07
- reporting from near the scene there
- 10:09
- which of course a large perimeter uh so
- 10:11
- let's check in now with Brianna Smith
- 10:13
- and the latest from there
- 10:15
- Brianna yeah sh and gray First
- 10:18
- Responders and agencies have been here
- 10:20
- for hours now from the local to the
- 10:22
- state to the federal level working hard
- 10:24
- to investigate the area but it feels
- 10:27
- much calmer in quiet compared to when we
- 10:30
- first arrived here on scene before this
- 10:32
- area was just covered with Witnesses and
- 10:34
- bystanders taking video remaining in
- 10:37
- disbelief at what they were seeing
- 10:39
- unfold and we spoke to some of those
- 10:41
- Witnesses who say they saw that
- 10:43
- explosion that Lit Up the Sky and they
- 10:45
- just said it was unbelievable and their
- 10:47
- hearts go out to the family and friends
- 10:49
- who are impacted by this situation and
- 10:52
- again you can see it's still very much
- 10:53
- an active scene here and you see the
- 10:55
- flashing lights the police officers that
- 10:58
- span blocks at this scene uh we also
- 11:01
- spoke to Governor Josh airo here was
- 11:03
- here tonight and this is what he had to
- 11:05
- say we have 25 members of our pendot
- 11:08
- team who are here right now we have
- 11:11
- members of the Pennsylvania Emergency
- 11:13
- Management Authority who are here
- 11:14
- including our director Randy padfield
- 11:17
- who joins me behind here we also have uh
- 11:21
- members of D the Department of
- 11:23
- Environmental Protection who are here to
- 11:25
- make sure that any hazardous materials
- 11:28
- are addressed and as you heard the mayor
- 11:30
- reference were joined by several state
- 11:33
- representatives and Senators I want to
- 11:35
- thank them they will make sure that
- 11:37
- whatever is needed for this community
- 11:40
- gets to this community I also spoke
- 11:43
- earlier this evening with united state
- 11:45
- Secretary of Transportation secretary du
- 11:48
- about this being a unified response to
- 11:50
- this Aviation disaster I think he put
- 11:53
- that in a really great way talking about
- 11:55
- how many agencies are coming together to
- 11:58
- piece together what happened been here
- 11:59
- tonight and of course our thoughts and
- 12:01
- prayers go out to those who are affected
- 12:04
- again we spoke to those Witnesses who
- 12:06
- saw this all unfold and then you think
- 12:08
- about the family members and those
- 12:10
- impacted those who lost their lives and
- 12:13
- this is just the beginning of this
- 12:14
- investigation this is going to take a
- 12:16
- while to figure out what happened here
- 12:18
- and of course we will keep you updated
- 12:20
- as we learn more sh and gray okay Ranna
- 12:23
- thank you for your reporting and your
- 12:26
- perspective tonight on this tragedy in
- 12:28
- the city of Philadelphia tonight as we
- 12:30
- continue to monitor this breaking news
- 12:32
- situation of course the videos continue
- 12:34
- to come in and just looking at these
- 12:37
- videos just unbelievable that this
- 12:40
- happened in our community in our
- 12:41
- neighborhood and so many people of
- 12:42
- course tonight impacted by this that
- 12:44
- plane in the air for about 30 seconds
- 12:47
- we're hearing before it made that what
- 12:49
- appeared to be a nose dive right there
- 12:51
- in Northeast Philadelphia along Cotman
- 12:53
- Avenue Roosevelt Boulevard we know homes
- 12:55
- were on fire buildings were on fire cars
- 12:58
- were on fire and sadly people walking
- 13:00
- the street were on fire yeah this
- 13:02
- incident cannot be lost on us the the
- 13:05
- humanity and knowing really what's
- 13:08
- happening in these moments where this
- 13:10
- plane uh wasn't able to keep its lift
- 13:14
- and to stay afloat and the videos that
- 13:16
- are coming in that really tell the story
- 13:20
- seeing the explosion seeing the people
- 13:22
- react uh in awe shocked by what happened
- 13:27
- wanting to know more of what was going
- 13:28
- on on it really just tells the story of
- 13:32
- those families we can't begin to imagine
- 13:35
- for those who are learning tonight that
- 13:36
- their loved ones did not make it we want
- 13:40
- to switch now to action news reporter
- 13:41
- Banna Gallagher she is live now um at a
- 13:44
- shelter and she's joined by this is uh
- 13:47
- council member Anthony Phillips uh
- 13:49
- joining Brianna and I'm sure he has a
- 13:51
- lot to say Brianna and sharing with you
- 13:53
- on on reaction reaction to this
- 13:57
- incident yes gray Shar as First
- 14:00
- Responders and officials are still on
- 14:02
- scene volunteers are making their way
- 14:04
- here to Samuel Fels high school and this
- 14:07
- is where officials are telling people to
- 14:09
- come if you need shelter you can't get
- 14:12
- to your home this is where you should
- 14:14
- come and I'm joined you know by council
- 14:16
- member right now why are you out here
- 14:18
- tonight yeah I'm out here because a lot
- 14:20
- of our residents have been impacted I
- 14:22
- represent this lower Northeast part of
- 14:23
- the district and this is our high school
- 14:25
- and I wanted to make sure that the
- 14:27
- residents that are here know that you
- 14:29
- know we're here for them honestly this
- 14:31
- is a community is coming together as I
- 14:34
- was walking into the shelter today uh
- 14:36
- tonight I had noticed three residents
- 14:39
- bringing water and other supplies to
- 14:41
- make sure that those who were affected
- 14:43
- by the tragedy felt good and so and also
- 14:47
- when I was in there I was listening to a
- 14:49
- resident tell me her story she was
- 14:51
- literally um at Five Five Doors Down
- 14:54
- from the tragedy wa watching TV doing
- 14:58
- work eating food and she had stuff in
- 15:00
- her hands and immediately when the plane
- 15:02
- struck everything in her hands flew up
- 15:05
- in the air her dog ran down to the
- 15:07
- basement and she went rushing after her
- 15:09
- dog to make sure he was safe but the dog
- 15:11
- was petrified she when she's going to
- 15:13
- the basement she noticed all of her
- 15:15
- front windows were out so a lot of the
- 15:18
- residents that are coming here can you
- 15:20
- imagine their homes are filled of debris
- 15:22
- their windows are out is not even
- 15:24
- hospitable so that whole neighborhood
- 15:26
- has been really um really impacting in a
- 15:29
- devastating way so right now we need
- 15:31
- love we need prayers we need support uh
- 15:33
- right here in our district so if you you
- 15:36
- want to come down to s's High School uh
- 15:38
- bring food bring love prayers and also
- 15:41
- supplies uh for our residents right now
- 15:44
- so I know what do things look like in
- 15:45
- there I know you said you just saw a
- 15:47
- handful of people um and I know we spoke
- 15:50
- a moment ago about that woman you know
- 15:52
- these stories that keep coming out these
- 15:54
- people that were there when when this
- 15:56
- happened it's heartbreaking it is
- 15:57
- heartbreaking it's it's quite
- 15:59
- devastating U what you see in there
- 16:00
- right now are people who are right now
- 16:04
- being put they sitting down with
- 16:06
- blankets over them um they are being
- 16:08
- comforted by Red Cross workers because
- 16:10
- Red Cross workers also have mental
- 16:12
- health support services that they given
- 16:13
- them as well and they're just they're
- 16:15
- showing them love and also they're
- 16:16
- getting water they're getting food
- 16:17
- that's might needed you're also being
- 16:19
- evaluated for any medical issues that
- 16:21
- they may be going through as well but
- 16:22
- this is going to be a long process and
- 16:24
- what I know for sure is that the city is
- 16:26
- going to have their back in in terms of
- 16:28
- rebuilding their homes that have been
- 16:30
- impacted but also the mental health
- 16:31
- support that they're going to need as
- 16:33
- well because you know your home is never
- 16:35
- going to feel the same you know after a
- 16:37
- tragedy like that and you got to find a
- 16:39
- way to get back into the home back into
- 16:41
- the groove of things I mean this has
- 16:42
- been a gutrich and week for me uh
- 16:44
- honestly and I can only imagine it's a
- 16:46
- gutr and weak for the rest of the city
- 16:48
- of Philadelphia as well U especially for
- 16:51
- these residents who have just been
- 16:52
- really impacted so yeah I know we heard
- 16:54
- mayor Schell Parker and Governor Josh
- 16:56
- Shapiro stress that this is a unified
- 16:58
- effort no stone stone will be left
- 17:00
- unturned and you know people are going
- 17:02
- to be coming together to help those that
- 17:03
- are impacted yeah absolutely um right
- 17:06
- now we in our office we're trying to
- 17:09
- figure out ways to make sure we get the
- 17:10
- word out about 1800 Red Cross and other
- 17:13
- support services that could be there
- 17:15
- whether that be mental health or
- 17:17
- financial services that people are going
- 17:18
- to need at this moment uh but we also on
- 17:20
- the city council side we clearly now
- 17:23
- understand that there is something going
- 17:25
- on in the aviation Across the Nation and
- 17:27
- we're trying to think about as council
- 17:29
- members what's next like how can we find
- 17:31
- a ways to make sure Aviation is strong
- 17:34
- um in our nation uh because that's
- 17:36
- supposed to be one of the safest places
- 17:37
- to be on and that's not it doesn't feel
- 17:39
- that way right now and people are
- 17:40
- feeling this gut wrench uh in their in
- 17:43
- their hearts and their throats right now
- 17:44
- it's just it's terrible all we need is
- 17:46
- God you know we really need God to see
- 17:48
- us through this one and I know people
- 17:50
- are praying for us thank you councilman

- 17:59
- to you guys sh gray well we're thankful
- 18:01
- to uh council member Phillips for
- 18:04
- joining us and sharing his perspective
- 18:06
- of what's happening to the residents our
- 18:08
- neighbors in the northeast tonight and
- 18:11
- as we continue our breaking news
- 18:12
- coverage of this crash here in Northeast
- 18:15
- Philadelphia I believe now we have uh
- 18:18
- some sound from the tower as this
- 18:21
- Learjet 55 came down in Northeast
- 18:24
- Philadelphia let's listen this at
- 18:27
- 7:55 uh we I have a lost aircraft we're
- 18:31
- not exactly sure what happened so we're
- 18:32
- trying to figure it out for now uh the
- 18:34
- field is is going to be closed so no no
- 18:37
- inbounds or outbounds
- 18:39
- probably six honor Fox sh I'm sure you
- 18:41
- copied that but uh for right now we're
- 18:44
- going to we're going to call the field
- 18:45
- closed um we'll try to get you out when
- 18:47
- we can if we can't we'll have to take
- 18:50
- you over to Atlantic but uh stand by for
- 18:52
- now so we'll have to get more
- 18:54
- information as to the context of the
- 18:57
- exchange that was happening there that
- 18:59
- is a piece of the audio from the control
- 19:02
- tower in relation to the time frame of
- when the ljet 55 uh was set to depart
- from the airport in Northeast
- Philadelphia we'll work to get more
- context as to what the conversation was
- about but that is the audio that we have
- as we're still of course for the first
- time playing that on the air here during
- our coverage we will continue to
- decipher from that
