  • no
  • it has to this has to go across the
  • business the ceo
  • mid-level people
  • mid-level people are the frustrating
  • frustrating people
  • because they have a lot more ideas than
  • their top level will absorb
  • so they have now clicked here they can
  • say ah we can translate it this way i
  • like your idea about putting the ideas
  • and then allowing
  • things to shape
  • pieces
  • six or puzzle pieces pieces can get
  • together become the ceo of a
  • pharmaceutical company i could do that i
  • would like to do that
  • yeah yeah
  • now i was talking about the
  • pharmaceutical thing
  • there are many vaccines available
  • but not produced yeah the circle yeah
  • yeah they're often hypothetical
  • that's a very very important diseases
  • very significant diseases
  • because they can't make money out of it
  • so they don't produce it and people die
  • well you know one of the key things that
  • struck me about the book was was the

  • 1:01
  • you know you identified the importance
  • of measuring things exactly but you also
  • made the point that the measurements are
  • pretty pathetic
  • the profession of measurement
  • is in trouble absolutely and i have to
  • admit that my dream was actually to
  • create a
  • an accounting system
  • we're trying to do it with malaria in
  • africa
  • the idea that
  • money spent should result in
  • a certain result which is reduction in
  • not how much much money we spend how
  • much result did we get and i'm trying
  • you know that that's how we should be
  • looking at all the time i'm trying to
  • actually sort of think through
  • how can you
  • sort of make a a a malaria social
  • business
  • where the
  • the profit
  • is

  • 2:01
  • available
  • and
  • it kills the mosquito and saves the
  • people if you have the respite in that
  • it's all the
  • very simple process
  • so i talk to the people who are
  • producing
  • and i said we'll be very much interested
  • to produce it ourselves
  • if you let us know how to do it and
  • we'll do it will happen no no so you
  • can't do that
  • because we'll produce and we'll sell it
  • to you i said no that's not what i meant
  • i meant we produce it so that we cut
  • down all the
  • extra
  • and just bare minimum
  • they wouldn't agree because they are
  • selling to the governments
  • so they
  • make money because donors pay off a lot
  • of money to do that i said this could be
  • a social business
  • if only you give the formula
  • anybody can produce it and make it so
  • cheap barely it adds any cost to the
  • real cost of a mosquito net and treating
  • the mosquito net is the minimum cost

  • 3:02
  • but that
  • that money making is more important
  • from this one of the metrics i'm trying
  • to follow is what has happened to the
  • price and the profit and the quantity
  • and it's obscene
  • yeah you know when you start looking at
  • it exactly that's
  • so these are the issues that we went to
  • the disease all of the diseases all the
  • pharmaceutical things
  • once you start thinking in social
  • business terms
  • suddenly it comes into a very different
  • place so
  • did you stop after that with the
  • mosquito net they have they have the
  • patent they have the fat so they have
  • they said we spend a lot of money
  • designing it and now we have to make
  • money out of it
  • this is the standard pharmaceutical
  • company explanation
  • whether they had spent a penny or a
  • billion dollar you don't know
  • they said we spend a lot of money in the
  • research
  • now that they have done it
  • they said we have to make that money to
  • cover the cost this is undefined cost

  • 4:03
  • so that's where the
  • scientists should get around
  • this pattern they don't want we
  • build another formula which works as
  • well
  • and it's in the social business way
