PETER BURGESS OPINION
OLD AND MAD AS HELL I have a huge sympathy for the Jews. The holocaust was horrendous and the treatment of jews for hundreds of years was awful ... BUT Original article: Peter Burgess COMMENTARY Peter Burgess | |||||||||
I am 84 years old. I went to Cambridge University in the UK and participated in the Aldermaston marches and demonstrations of the 1950s and early 1960s, taking place on Easter weekend between the Atomic Weapons Research establishment at .Aldermaston and Trafalgar Square organized by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). I don't know how many people participated but it was probably around 40,000 by the time the march got to Trafalgar Square.
Years later Martin Luther King embraced non-violence but stood up and got a lot of people to pay attention ... and it did a lot to change the world. There is good reason at the moment to be 'mad as hell'. On the one side the events of October 7th where Hamas orchestrated a massacre where some 1,200 were killed and maybe a further 300 taken hostage. This was wrong and evil. But in the seven months or so so since October the Israeli military is reported to have killed more than 30,000 Palestinians, a majority being women and children. From my point of view this is obscene and even more wrong and evil. In my view this was enabled by a corrupt Israeli leadership headed by Benjamin Netanyahu ... the long time Prime Minister of Israel who seems to be willing to do anything to maintain his political power and avoid accountability. The Palestinians need to figure out who can be an effective political leader of their community and the Israelis need to elect a leader that has a vision for a peaceful future for the region. The international community ... from students to politicians need to embrace peace and cooperation and reject the out-of-control violence that has been in play from Israel since October 7th.. I have not been so upset in years ... Meanwhile, we are dropping the ball in support of Ukraine. Allowing Russia 'win' the Ukraine conflict is another and potentially much bigger existential threat to world peace!
