Peter Burgess COMMENTARY

Peter Burgess
I was born in January 1940 and grew up near London for the first five years of my life during WWII.

One of my ealiest memories is to do with the importance of not talking about anything to do with troop movements and the location of military equipment.

One of my earlist memories is being on the back of my father's bicycle going through a wooded area near Aldershot and seeing hundreds if not thousands of military vehicles hidden in the woods. This was a few weeks before the Normandy invasion.

Later, I learned that several hundred miles away in East Anglia, there was a huge collection of mock military vehicles somewhat more visible to Zazi reconnaisance planes.

This secrecy was important and had a significant role in making the Normandy landings successful. The Germans half expected that the Allied landings would be much further North and were not fully prepared in Normandy.
