Burgess COMMENTARY
It is a long time since Jimmy Carter was the President of the United States ... and during this time he has been engaged in all sorts of activities that aimed to help make the world a better place. I share the sentiment expressed in this quote. There is no question in my mind that an investment in war ends up with net destruction. There is one caveat to this, and that is that there may be situations when a defensive war is required. I was born in the UK in 1940, and the war that Churchill led in response to Nazi aggression was absolutely required. In contrast, much of the military action that the US has engaged in during the past several decades should have been led by diplomats rather than soldiers. Sadly, many top US diplomats are political appointees rather than civil service and experts in the country where they are asked to serve. Peace does not come from the barrel of a gun ... and even less from a pilotless drone strike!
