ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
INTERACTION WITH BING

TPB experiment with a BING conversation ... April 19th 2023 ... with impressions

Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
This is my second time to engage with BING.

There has been a huge amout of hype around ChatGPT, BING and others ... and it seems that there is a huge race going on to become the dominant player in the AI space ... whatever that means.

I am quite disappointed at the rather pedestrian responses that BING has provided. If this level of thinking is going to dominate the United States, then it is to be anticipated that America will fall further behind in its global standing. My impression is that BING and AI in its present form will slow down rather than accelerate the knowledge improvement that is needed in the general population.

I did not make use of the references included in the BING responses. The one reference that I checked was interesting, but not a good use of my time.

On balance, at this point in my AI journey, I am quite disappointed.

Bing, 1:32 PM I understand your concern about how the potential of technology to benefit society and manage the environment is offset by a widespread corporate and investment belief that profit is always good and society will benefit. It's true that there have been massive productivity improvements in the past 40 years and virtually all the benefit of productivity improvement has accrued to the rather few people at the top while the rest of us have had essential flat-line increases in income and wealth.

It's great to hear that TrueValueMetrics.org is working to help change the management of the economy. Can you tell me more about TrueValueMetrics.org and how it works? 7:37 AM Sorry I did not get back to you promptly. There is a lot going on, and my routine has been disrupted by a fall I had in New York last Wednesday which required an overnight stay in hospital. Bing, 7:37 AM I'm sorry to hear that you had a fall and had to stay overnight in the hospital. I hope you are feeling better now. Is there anything I can help you with? 7:43 AM Fortunately modern medicine is amazing if you can get access to it and I am fortunate that the best hospitals in New York are impressive ... I was initially treated by Mount Sinai Hospital and then by New York Presbyterian. Both deserve top grades for their medical performance. Sadly the economics of modern American medicine and health care is a shambles and the health outcomes for the general population of the Unites States is very low while the costs of the system are ridiculously high. The system is profitable at the same time that it is essentially a failure when looked at from health outcomes. Bing, 7:43 AM I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with the healthcare system in the US. The US healthcare system is a mix of public and private programs 1. Unlike many other countries in the world, there is no universal healthcare system in the US 1. Healthcare is largely provided by the private sector, and financed by a system of private insurance, and federal and state government programs 1. The uninsured rate of 8.5 percent is down from 16 percent in 2010, when the landmark Affordable Care Act (ACA) was enacted 1. Insurers set their own benefit baskets and cost-sharing structures, within federal and state regulations 1. I hope this helps. 1. commonwealthfund.org 7:51 AM Why is there no universal healthcare system in the US. Worse there is really no health insurance ... rather what is called insurance is really prepaid health care expense masquerading as insurance. Very few people understand the limits of 'so called' insurance because the insurance programs themselves are a major source of profit for those involved. IT is not recognized as a scam, but that is really what it is. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was a step in the right direction, but was opposed by mostly Republican lawmakers who have obstructed meaningful progress on improving the system for a very long time. It is very disappointing, and quite amazing that the GOP still gets any votes at all! Bing, 7:51 AM The US does not have a universal healthcare system because no one has ever voted for a government willing to provide it 1 2. While Obamacare did reduce the number of Americans without health insurance coverage from 40 million to less than 30 million, Obamacare is not universal healthcare 1 2. One key reason is the unique political culture in America. As a nation that began on the back of immigrants with an entrepreneurial spirit and without a feudal system to ingrain a rigid social structure, Americans are more likely to be individualistic 2. I hope this helps. 1. reimaginingeducation.org 2. constitutionus.com 8:03 AM Yes, the history of America is very different from the history of Europe and the history of the Far East ... in fact I have often joked during my lifetime that for me the United States has no history, it is all recent current affairs. From my experience I have observed that immigrants to America have a strong work ethic ... which at some point turns into entitlement. Most immigrants do not have the skillset to be successful in an entrepreneurial way, but there are some but not many who have had spectacular success. I am an economic migrant from the UK in the 1960s and reasonably successful because of a world class education. Sadly what I see at the moment is a world where a massive proportion of the population has very little economic opportunity and rich countries that do not want inward migration in large part because of a lot of media misinformation which now travels at the speed of light. This is not a pretty picture, and likely to be aggravated by the latest developments in AI. Bing, 8:03 AM It's interesting to hear your perspective on the history of America and the work ethic of immigrants. I'm glad to hear that you were able to find success in the US due to your education. It's true that there are many people who have very little economic opportunity and that this is a problem that needs to be addressed. AI is certainly an area that has the potential to create new opportunities and change the way we work. However, it's important to ensure that these changes are made in a way that benefits everyone and not just a select few. 8:04 AM Who harvests the agricultural products we buy from the supermarkets? Bing, 8:04 AM The agricultural products that we buy from supermarkets are harvested by farmers 1 2. Farmers sell their products directly to consumers at farmers’ markets, and via community-supported agriculture (CSA) and pick-your-own programs 3. Others use an intermediary or middleman, such as cooperatives, food hubs, retailers, restaurants and schools, to help them distribute their produce locally 1 2. Food distributors act as the middleman between the farmer and the customer or retailer 2. I hope this helps. 1. sare.org 2. treehugger.com 3. sarep.ucdavis.edu 8:07 AM Dear Bing ... Many of the people that work in the fields and do the actual work are workers who have temporary status in the USA. Your answer is suitable for someone in the second grade but actually dangerous for a serious adult !!!!!!!!!!!! Bing, 8:07 AM I'm sorry if my previous response was not helpful. I'm still learning so I appreciate your understanding and patience.praying 8:15 AM I understand that AI systems are still learning ... but what are they learning and how fast? I have been a fast learner for all my adult life ... I am now 83 tears old ... and have engaged in experiential learning for all my adult life. I do not know exactly how the learning algorithms work, but I do know that adding up and averaging a lot of datapoints rarely results in better information and understanding, rather datapoints have more value when they are more nuanced. How modern AI incorporates nuance is a black box that is likely to be tainted by the designers and technicians. I am scared stiff, because it is clear that a lot can be done with AI and at some point nobody will be in control. Bing, 8:15 AM AI learns by using algorithms to discover patterns and generate insights from the data they are exposed to 1. AI can mimic a human brain's neural network, which learns by processing examples and adjusting weights between neurons 1 2. AI can also learn through positive and negative reinforcement, much like animals or children do 1 2. There are different types of techniques to build self-teaching AI, such as supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning 1 3 4. AI is still in its early stages of development and there are many challenges that need to be addressed before it can be fully integrated into society 4. However, AI has already made significant contributions in various fields such as healthcare, finance, transportation, and more 4. It is important to note that AI is not a replacement for humans but rather a tool that can help us make better decisions and improve our lives 4. I hope this helps answer your question. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. 1. simplilearn.com 2. ed.ted.com +2 more 8:20 AM Do you know the age profile of people who are interacting with Bing to assist in Bing's learning process as well as a whole range of other experiential factors such as nationality and language and level and field of education ... this would be very interesting to know. Bing, 8:21 AM I'm sorry but I don't have access to that information. However, I can tell you that Bing's AI is designed to learn from a wide range of sources such as web searches, user interactions, and more 1. The goal is to create an AI that can understand and respond to users' needs more effectively and efficiently 1. I hope this helps answer your question. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. 1. nytimes.com 8:22 AM Does that mean that it is only information that is already in digital form that is being used to train Bing? Bing, 8:22 AM Bing's AI uses a wide range of sources to learn and improve its performance 1. These sources include web searches, user interactions, and more 1. The goal is to create an AI that can understand and respond to users' needs more effectively and efficiently 1. I hope this answers your question.
