Can Democracy Survive in the U.S.? Jamelle Bouie and Corey Robin in Conversation, Moderated by Katrina vanden Heuvel

Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
I am bored stiff with Trump ... and by extension the 'bleeping' media.

Trump is a huge 'nothing', yet the stupid media gives him an inordinate amount of coverage. Most stupid stories don't last very long in the modern media cycle but for some reason the stupid story of Trump keeps on going. It is worse than the 'Energizer Bunny'.

Why is this? There are many reasons, and fixing just one of them is not going to make much of a difference. American politics and American governance has never been very good at 'complicated' ... and they are even worse at it now than they have been in the past.

Most Americans start off with a huge disadvantage. Most American children get a really poor formal education by the standards of other developed countries, and this is made even worse by not very effective parenting. Compared to a lot of other countries and cultures American children are 'spoilt rotten!' and not at all prepared for the much tougher real world that they must engage with as independent adults.

Americans are not very good at discerning fact from fiction. The country has been prone to misinformation for a very long time, but with the advent of digital technology and social media platforms, the problem has become far worse. For most users of social media misinformation is going to dominate the feed ... that is how the algoriths are designed.

The potantial of America is huge ... but the 'management of America' is a disaster, and getting worse. This trend is bound to get worse unless Americans truly get in touch with their reality.

The good news is that the 'potential' of the country is huge and plenty big enough to make a huge difference ... improvement ... in the quality of life for everyone in America and for most everyone on planet earth.

This potential can never be realized until there is a serious rethink of how America is 'managed' and by extention how the rest of the world is 'managed'.

Wednesday, March 22, 2023 ... 6:30 PM (EDT)

Description:

As America becomes even more polarized in the aftermath of Trump’s presidency, two leading commentators discuss the past and future of our threatened democracy. What are the constitutional and historical roots of our current crisis? Can our democratic institutions withstand the forces at play? Jamelle Bouie, columnist for The New York Times Opinion section, joins in conversation with Corey Robin, distinguished professor of political science at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center, and author, most recently, of The Enigma of Clarence Thomas. Moderated by Katrina vanden Heuvel, publisher and editorial director of The Nation.

Presented with the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies.

Part of the Promise and Perils of Democracy Project funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
