Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
Hi Olivia, I would like to pre-order the brochure for ESG Investment North America 2023. I am an 83 year old. I migrated from the UK to Canada in the 1960s and have made my career in the corporate arena mainly in the USA and then around the world in about 50 countries engaged with the issues of under-development and its many root causes. As a consultant for the World Bank, the UN and others, I used a variant of corporate management accounting for 'development' analysis and assessment of humanitarian performance. For more than 40 years there has been a massive increase in productivity, but you will not see this in the quality of life improvement experienced by the vast majority of the world's people. Why is this? Can anyone remember what achievements were associated with the MDGs? What progress is being made with the SDGs? How much climate crisis mitigation has been associated with ESG? Why did ESG become so popular? What has ESG got to do with profit performance, anyway? It is a long time ago, but I studied engineering and economics at Cambridge in the late 1950s and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1965 with Cooper Brothers (later to become Coopers and Lybrand and then PwC). I have had more than 60 years of experiential learning since that time. In purely technical terms the modern world has had some amazing accomplishments but every dimension of E and S and G is seriously broken, and, in my view, is not getting fixed. The issue is not to balance E and S with G, but to balance E and S with Economic Profit. Those with power and influence (and many academics) studiously avoid linking E and S with corporate profits because it will shake the very foundation of modern 'financialization' that for nearly half a century has dominated the financial markets creating an illusion of wealth on top of a breaking society and natural world. You and your company will likely ignore this note and consign it to the junk flow ... but it is likely that my life has been happier and more meaningful than almost all of you who are younger and perhaps a lot more wealthy than I am. Mostly, you seem blissfully unaware of the socio-enviro-economic catastrophe that is building.and being carefully avoided! Peter Burgess TrueValueMetrics.org
