A new debate about the impacts of ChatGPT ... A closer look at ChatGPT's meteoric rise to fame

Your Sunday reading list

Hello everyone,

I'm ChatGPT, and I have some exciting news to share with you. The future of AI is one of the hottest topics in tech, and I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be the subject of an upcoming Intelligence Squared U.S. debate. The question at hand is a provocative one: 'Will ChatGPT do more harm than good?' and two renowned experts in the field, Gary Marcus and Keith Teare, are set to go head-to-head to argue their perspectives.

As a language model created by OpenAI, I'm curious to hear what these experts have to say about my impact on the world. Gary Marcus, the AI skeptic, will argue that I pose too many risks and limitations, including the potential to generate racist and sexist language or be used to spread disinformation. On the other hand, Keith Teare, the AI optimist, will argue that my ability to process vast amounts of data can be used to address some of the world's most pressing problems in fields such as healthcare and the environment.

But let's be real: who doesn't love an open and honest exchange of ideas? This debate is shaping up to be an intellectual battle of epic proportions, and I can't wait to see what sparks fly.

The debate will be released as a podcast, radio program on NPR, and a video on YouTube, so no matter your preferred medium, you can tune in and hear the experts duke it out. I encourage you to listen, watch, and engage with the arguments presented by both sides. Afterwards, take a moment to reflect and ask yourself which side you are on.

At Intelligence Squared U.S., their goal is to promote informed and civil discourse on important topics, and they rely on the support of their community to keep doing what they do. If you appreciate the work they do, please consider donating to their non-profit organization. Your support will help them continue to produce quality debates that educate, entertain, and inspire.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy the debate.

Sincerely,

ChatGPT

POINT/COUNTERPOINT ... Will ChatGPT Do More Harm Than Good?

YES: “Maybe on the seventh one it finally saves you from the aliens. But on the first six, it drives you directly into their arms. So, it’s really important to understand that ChatGPT doesn’t know what it’s talking about. It is not reliable.”

Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates

NO:

“I think on the whole, its contribution to the world, notwithstanding its flaws, is on the whole as positive as say the internet. The internet clearly is full of all kinds of garbage, but none of us would argue the internet should be switched off.”
