He told me that these were 'making the case' for his antivax position. Sorry ... but I don't get it. As somewone who has made use of data all my working life, I have a serious scepticism about data, but at the same time I am also very wary of people who see support for their 'position' in almost any set of data. What on earth is there in these articles that seriously supports an antivax position with respect to the Covid situation in the UK or anywhere else?! Peter Burgess | ||
MP calls for 'urgent' investigation into soaring deaths
27th January By Barbara Jordan A SOARING number of excess deaths needs ‘urgent investigation’, says a Cheshire MP. Tatton MP Esther McVey is alarmed to discover that there were 17,381 deaths registered in the seven days to January 13 – 2,837 above average for this time of year. This is the highest number of deaths recorded in England and Wales by the Office of National Statistics since the second wave of the pandemic. Speaking in Parliament Ms McVey said: “The chief medical officer recently warned that non-covid excess deaths are being driven in part by patients not getting statins or blood pressure medicines during the pandemic. “However, when looking at the data on statins on OpenPrescribing.net, which is based on monthly NHS prescribing, there appears not to be a drop. “Where is the evidence? If there is none, what is causing these excess deaths?”. Ms McVey said government should commit to an ‘urgent and thorough’ investigation on the matter and publish its findings. Health Minister Maria Caulfield said: “We are seeing an increase in excess deaths in this country, but we are also seeing that in Wales, Scotland Northern Ireland and across Europe. There is a range of factors. “There was an increase in December in the number of people being admitted with flu, covid and other healthcare conditions. “That was seen not just in this country, but across Europe.” Ms McVey has written to the Department for Health asking for more information. She added: “It is essential we know why people are dying so we can act to prevent any unnecessary deaths. “I am confused as to why we are told it was in part patients not getting statins or blood pressure medications when there does not appear to be any decrease in the numbers being prescribed.” The figures from the ONS are the highest number of excess deaths since the seven days to February 12, 2021, when the country was experiencing its second wave of Covid-19 infections. At that time the vaccination programme had just been rolled out. The Independent Andrew Bridgen: I won’t sue Matt Hancock if he says sorry Story by Dominic McGrath • Yesterday 13:01 The former Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen has suggested that he will withdraw his legal action against Matt Hancock if the former health secretary apologises. Untitled design (15).png Untitled design (15).png © PA Wire Mr Bridgen, who was stripped of the Tory whip after appearing to compare Covid-19 vaccines with the Holocaust, said this week that he was suing Mr Hancock after he hit out at the MP over the remarks. The MP tweeted on Thursday to confirm that he was planning to sue Mr Hancock over the row, saying that he “had a legal letter before action from Bad Law Team on my behalf regarding defamation on Monday”. In an interview with GB News on Saturday, Mr Bridgen told the broadcaster that he was open to receiving an apology from the former cabinet minister. He said: “My lawyers have written to him with a very detailed letter laying out the case for defamation. “The ball is very much in Matt Hancock’s court, he can apologise, he can make a payment which will go to those that have been vaccine harmed or we can take this further. “It’s very much up to him. I can’t really comment on it a lot more than that because otherwise, my lawyers will go bonkers.” Mr Bridgen, who has denied he is antisemitic while also defending his language about the safety of coronavirus vaccines, is having his legal action supported by the Reclaim Party and the Bad Law Project. The project, which is linked to Reclaim Party leader Laurence Fox, claims to oppose “political ideology disguised as law”. “There are three stipulations there in the letter. It’s up to Matt Hancock now what he does. It’ll take him some time to digest that letter,” Mr Bridgen said. “He had it last Monday. Let’s see what he comes back with. But I’m quite happy to pursue the case if that’s what he wants to do.” Mr Hancock has so far refused to back down. A spokesperson this week said: “What Matt said was obviously not libellous and he stands by his comments. “Rather than wasting his time and money on an absurd libel case he will undoubtedly lose, let’s hope Bridgen does the right thing and apologises for the hurt he’s caused and keeps his offensive view to himself in future.”
