Tonight on Amanpour and Company
Monday, January 16, 2023
Airs weekdays at 11 PM on PBS
Igor Zhovka
Chief diplomatic adviser to President Zelensky
In one of the single most deadly attacks of Russia's war, a missile strike on an apartment building in Dnipro, Ukraine has left at least 40 people dead. The current wave of attacks on civilian targets comes at a critical time. Ukraine says there is “fierce and ongoing” fighting for the eastern town of Soledar, near Bakhmut, and Kyiv fears Putin will find an excuse to re-invade from the north. Meanwhile, Western allies – including Britain, France, and Poland – promise to send Kyiv tanks and other advanced weapons. Will the aid arrive in time to bolster Ukraine's defense against feared Russian offensives this spring? Igor Zhovkva is a top aide to President Zelensky and joins the show from Kyiv.
Dara Khosrowshahi
CEO, Uber
Uber is throwing its support behind Ukraine, with CEO Dara Khosrowshahi aiding efforts to move food, medical supplies, and refugees around the war-torn country. On Thursday, Khosrowshahi visited Kyiv to meet with government partners and with Uber employees risking their lives to drive people to safety. Back home in the U.S., the focus is less on Uber’s humanitarian efforts and more on its labor practices, after the company sued to block pay hikes for its drivers in New York. Khosrowshahi is now on his way to the World Economic Forum in Davos, and he joins the show from Amsterdam.
Sanam Naraghi Anderlini
Founder and CEO, International Civil Society Action Network
The British government reacted with fury to Iran’s execution of Alireza Akbari this past weekend. A former Iranian government official, Akbari held dual British-Iranian citizenship. He was accused of spying for the U.K., a charge denied by the U.K. and himself. The British foreign secretary warns Iran “will be held to account.” Akbari’s killing comes as scores more have received death sentences in the crackdown on anti-government demonstrations. Four of the accused have been hanged. Could this spate of executions succeed in stifling the protests? Sanam Naraghi Anderlini is founder and CEO of the International Civil Society Action Network, with more than two decades of experience working to prevent violence against women around the world.
Ilya Somin
Author, 'Free to Move'
Those fleeing war and oppression often face long immigration battles when seeking refuge in the United States. “Uniting for Ukraine” is a private refugee sponsorship program created by the Biden administration in response to Putin’s war. It bypasses the conventional admission system, allowing refugees to be settled within weeks. George Mason University law professor Ilya Somin has sponsored Ukrainian refugees under this program and speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about how this model could revolutionize U.S. immigration.
In Case You Missed It
Long COVID Doctor: “We Don’t Know What We’re Dealing With”
China’s reversal on its Zero COVID Policy has produced a wave of infection that has overwhelmed many hospitals. Research published in Chinese state media suggests more than 900 million people in the country were likely infected with COVID in a wave that peaked nearly two weeks after restrictions were lifted. Symptoms can persist beyond the initial infection, lasting for weeks, months, or even years. Dr. Francesca Beaudoin, director of the Long COVID Initiative at Brown University, joins Hari Sreenivasan to explain why the disease is so difficult to diagnose.
