A wonderful reality from Robert Reich

Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
I came across this quote from Robert Reich via an MSNBC interview with Anand Giridharadas on the occasion of his book tour in 2019.

I am posting this observation a few days after the 2022 midterm election in the USA ... an election when it appears that the electorate might have started a modest return to its senses. O need to be a little bit careful because the results are not final final but the Democrats did a whole lot better than anyone expected.

As most people know about me, I am a critic of the modern media in large part because they are being forced into telling only half the story most of the time. In this contaxt I have observed that the many political commentators in the runup to the election would highlight what was going on with the top three issues in the campaigning and from this generally conclude that the Republicans were going to win. I tried to argue that if they would discuss the top six issues then they would find that Democrats still had a lot going for them.

When voters got into the voting booth they had time to take into consideration all the issues that were in play, and in this situation at least six top issues got their attention.

It is interesting to try to understand how it is that the modern GOP has a big following from white working class men courtesy of a very hypocritical branding campaign over many years ... really going back to Nixon. This campaign has nothing to do with reality, but it has achieved its primary objective of getting votes away from Democrats. I argue that the modern US political landscape is less about 'left' and 'right' but more about 'top' and 'bottom'.

In the 'top' -v- 'bottom' scenario the bottom get to vote but it really does not matter ... both parties are only going through the motions and the real decisions that have an impact on abything are actually made by an 'unelected' small minority who have huge wealth and control power.

I have thought for a long time ... like perhaps 30 years ... that the policies of the Democrats should get election support from as much as 80% of the electorate. The idea that the Democrats struggle to get 50% of the vote suggests that something is wrong, and most likely it is an abysmal capacity for getting the message across. But maybe it is the willingness of the GOP to engage in massive malicious missinformation which pulls people in in a way that defies all logic.
