Original article: Peter Burgess COMMENTARY Most of the time, I am impressed by AOC's political savvy ... but not this past week. Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and the House Progressive Caucus of the Democratic Party in Congress made a huge mistake by sending a letter to President Biden asking for him to embrace a nagotiated settlemend to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. When I was very young growing up in England during WWII, a letter like this would have been considered treasonous and the penalties would have been draconian. I understand that the United States is a different place with a different history and culture and geography, but that is a problem and certainly not a justification. A letter like this is a 'gift' to the other side ... to Putin and the hard-liners who support him in the Soviet Union. My career never got into the media, so nobody knows very much about me, if anything ... but I saw enough of nasty people at the top of countries and the way in which they exploit any mistep by their opponents. Putin is better than most at this behavior. But there are others embedded in all sorts of places who will also use this stupid letter to their advantage ,,, not least, the Republicans that are running for office in this 2022 election. UPDATE Less than 24 hours after this letter became public knowledge, the letter was withdrawn by the senders. That is good ... but a lot of damage has been done. The best that one can wish for is that everyone concerned with this fiasco will learn from it. Peter Burgess | ||
