Paul Mango Webinar and Q&A: The Inside Story Behind Operation Warp Speed
Description Paul Mango, key leader of Operation Warp Speed and former deputy chief of US Health and Human Services, joins Avik Roy, President of FREOPP, to tell the powerful story of how our nation’s leaders overcame the challenges in developing the COVID vaccine to achieve one of the most successful public-private partnerships since World War II. In his new book, “Warp Speed: Inside the Operation That Beat COVID, the Critics, and the Odds,” Mango describes how the development of the COVID vaccine did not happen by accident. Rather, it was the result of exceptional leadership, explicit strategy, and unprecedented teamwork. While the prior record for vaccine development and distribution was approximately 4.5 years, Operation Warp Speed got the COVID vaccine to the American people in less than 10 months. Speakers Avik Roy President @The Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity Avik Roy is the President of FREOPP, a non-partisan, non-profit think tank that conducts original research on expanding opportunity to those who least have it. Roy also serves on the Advisory Board of the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, and as a Senior Advisor to the Bipartisan Policy Center. Among other titles, Roy is the author of Medicare Advantage for All: A Patient-Centered Plan for Universal Coverage and Permanent Fiscal Solvency, published by FREOPP in 2019; and “Bitcoin and the U.S. Fiscal Reckoning,” published in National Affairs in 2021. He has advised three presidential candidates on policy, including Marco Rubio, Rick Perry, and Mitt Romney. Roy was educated at MIT, where he studied molecular biology, and the Yale University School of Medicine. Paul D. Mango Former Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Paul Mango was the Deputy Chief of Staff for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 2019-2021. During this time, he served as Secretary Azar’s formal liaison to Operation Warp Speed where he was involved in nearly all strategic, operational, and financial aspects of the program, and facilitated its day-to-day activities among the Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Defense, and the White House. Prior to his role as Deputy Chief of Staff, Paul served from 2018-2019 as the Chief of Staff at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1981, where he graduated as a Distinguished Cadet. He received his Master’s in Business Administration from Harvard University in 1988, where he graduated as a Baker Scholar.
