CITIES FOR ALL: Inclusive Implementation & Monitoring of the SDGs & the NUA ... by United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat)
In order to respond to the fundamental challenges that threaten the sustainability and prosperity of nations and its cities, the international community has renewed its efforts to shape global policies and practices that are crucial for the sustainability of humankind. The adoption of the 2030 Development Agenda and the New Urban Agenda represent an important paradigm shift in tackling both persistent and emerging challenges, with a greater recognition and understanding of the multiple dimensions of poverty and vulnerability, especially effecting women and youth, are related to urbanization.
The side event will be an open forum to demonstrate both the need for meaningful data collection as a way to measure and demonstrate the effectiveness of the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda, combined with examples of how the inclusive implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda is being undertaken by governments, civil society, the private and multi-lateral sector. The speakers will be drawn from four main sectors namely civil society, private sector, government and UN Agencies with a strong links to cities, and who will discuss both how data and metrics are essential for development goals to make correct decisions on the best policies to adopt, combined with how the sectors currently are implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda.

Gateway Portals to the City: Infrastructure for Sustainable Urbanization by United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat)
DESCRIPTION Every great city has great portals. Often spectacular in scale and scope, these portals are the entry points to a city that create the first impression. They convey the importance and the magnificence of the city; they define the collective ambitions of the populous; they are important cultural artifacts; they define the character of a city and they tend to last many generations. In contradistinction, purely utilitarian portals are the hallmark of a utilitarian society. The event organized by the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization will bring together key stakeholders from Governments, UN system and other international organizations, the private sector, and civil society to engage in a dialogue that emphasizes the integrated and cross‐sectoral nature of sustainable infrastructure and portals to the city and its multiple roles in supporting the achievement of the SDGs. All modes of transport portals will be addressed. The meeting will also look at points of entry to the city from the perspective of the New Urban Agenda adopted in Quito in 2016. Special guests: H.E. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General, United Nations, H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson, President, United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Frederick Musiiwa Makamure Shava, President, ECOSOC, Dr. Joan Clos, United Nations Under‐Secretary‐General and Executive Director, United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‐Habitat), H.E. GRAND HYATT 109 EAST 42 STREET NEW YORK NEW YORK NY Tuesday September 19 8:00am 10:00am
Governments and businesses are facing a crisis of integrity.
Inequality combined with concern about elite capture and corruption scandals have contributed to declining public trust in elected officials, corporate executives, and the institutions they represent.
Leaders in government, business and civil society face a common challenge to create new conditions for trust and integrity through greater transparency, accountability and by countering and preventing corruption.
This dynamic session will convene global business and civil society leaders with policy makers in open conversation to explore commitments in this effort, progress to date and the challenges which remain.
The discussion at the 2017 Annual Concordia Summit will contribute to a UN General Assembly review of commitments made by governments at the 2016 London Anti-Corruption Summit.
Participants in this session will address questions such as: What is the role of business in preventing corruption? What progress has been made since the 2016 London Anti-Corruption Summit? What are the barriers to ensuring anti-corruption commitments are realised? What reforms are necessary to achieve these commitments? How can anti-corruption advocates best articulate the business case for beneficial ownership and opening contracting to catalyse corporate support? To what extent can partnerships between sectors assist in promoting transparency and accountability?

When October 3, 2017 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Where Tumblr 35 E 21st Street New York, NY 10010
Join New America NYC for a conversation with Alexis Okeowo about her debut book, A Moonless, Starless Sky, as well as a discussion on the state of extremism in Africa today — and how local responses to it can better inform global national security policy.
Overview Recent waves of populism and nationalism – including those that fueled Brexit and Donald Trump – have some fearing the end of Western democracy. But are these events really a threat to the liberal world order? Or will resilient democracies rally to triumph over fear, xenophobia and fractured political parties?
French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy and Harvard University Lecturer Yascha Mounk will argue for the motion. Bloomberg View columnist Clive Crook and the Hoover Institution’s Kori Schake will argue against.

After the U.S. election, President Trump reaffirmed America’s commitment to security and economic cooperation with Japan. On the economic front, the U.S.-Japan Economic Dialogue has been formed to promote prosperity for the two countries, yet the way forward remains uncertain. Will Trump remold decades-old alliance with Japan? Will Trump link economic and trade issues with security? What lies ahead for U.S.-Japan economic ties? In this program, speakers discuss Trump’s economic policies and its impact on Japan’s economy, the progress of the high-level economic dialogue, and ways to expand opportunities for trade and investment.
