I missed the CAW Annual General Meeting when it took place in October, Mea Culpa. It was a virtual Zoom meeting so there was little or no personal interaction anyway, but there are a lot of issues around accountancy, accountability and socio-enviro-economic 'management' that are on my mind.
In my view, there is a massive mismatch between the progress of technology over my adult lifetime and the progress of people as measured by their 'quality of life' and their 'happiness'.
This is not desirable ... and to put it bluntly, it scares me to death!
I was born in 1940 at the beginning of WWII. We lived in the outskirts of London are were bombed by the Nazis on and off for five years. I was too young to be scared and played with a wooden machine gun to shoot down the 'flying bombs -- V1s' as they flew over our house. However, I cannot now imagine how scared my parents must have been. There were no glass windows anywhere on our street, and several houses, including our own had holes in our roofs from falling debris (mainly anti-aicraft shells that have to come down to earth somewhere) and some unexploded bombs. Three houses about a hundred yards away had direct hits and were completely destroyed. So ... I don't like war and I want peace.
But I don't want peace at any price ... and I am not a 'peacenik' or 'pacifist'. More, I am an advocate of 'peace through strength' as well as 'peace ... because it is the best way to have progress'.
I am old enough to have some understanding of why there is so much violence around the world. Almost everywhere ... perhaps everywhere ... there is an individual or small group of individuals who see their way to wealth and power through violence and the subjugation of people. Once in a while in history there have been 'just' wars, but more often than not the root cause is someone who ir power hungry and greedy!
