Description

Private sector data plays a critical role in tracking progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Private sector data on its performance and contributions to the SDGs informs national policymaking and enhances policy development for sustainable development.

Countries annually report on their SDG progress at the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) through Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). GRI’s analysis of country SDG progress in the 2022 Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), shows two major gaps hindering the development of effective policies:
  1. 1 - Policy makers often struggle to understand how data on private sector impacts reported with reporting standards can inform policy making decisions. 97% of VNRs recognized the contributions of the private sector towards SDG implementation, however only 54% referred to private sector reporting and transparency to quantify that contribution.
  2. 2 - There is a knowledge gap of existing and developing policy instruments, which can lead to fragmented policies and disclosure requirements. Filling in these gaps requires access to public data on policies and private sector impacts.
This 90-minute session will explore the synergies between SDG 17 and SDG 12.6 by exploring the role of legislative approaches and initiatives to make corporate data available. It will provide analysis of policy data from the recently updated free to use Carrots & Sticks (C&S) policy database of mandatory and voluntary public policy instruments either requiring or encouraging firms to report sustainability-related information.
