PEOPLE MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE

Essentially almost everything changes because people have done something. Yes ... natural systems change over time, but the rate of change is tiny compared to the rate of change associated with human activity in all its manifestations.

People are incredibly creative. This has been happening for tens of thousands of years, but the recent couple of centuries have seen quite remarkable creativity and an improvement in people's standards of living and quality of life never possible before in human history.

At the same time, these improvements have come at a cost. There has been degradation of the natural environment that is now very serious and needs to be addressed.
People make priorities, and the priority must be to address the many issues that pose risk ... existential risks ... to the future of humankind as we know it.

THE PEOPLE PERSPECTIVE

The purpose of everything should be to ... improve quality of life. It is the essence of humanity ... and should be the main measure of success.

An individual's wealth (financial capital) is only one contributing part of what makes up a person's quality of life ... an individual's human capital, but only a part.

Human capital in the present has been achieved by an individual's history … such things as parenting, nutritious food, good healthcare, good education, good surroundings, role models and so forth. Skills and experience are accumulated over time. There is a historic cost to getting these things, but the value accumulation is reflected in the present. Past earnings that are not spent but saved, factor into the human capital of the present.

Society or community also feeds into an individual's human capital. A society that has no violence and is supportive of an individual adds to human capital. A society where there is a future full of opportunity is also part of the state of human capital in the present.

The present value of the future depends on what the future looks like, but also depends on what the individual has done in the past to be in a position to take advantage of the future.

A person lives a lifetime ... maybe short or long. The dynamic of a person's life changes over time depending on their stage in life.

When a person is born, all of this person's life is in the future. When a person is old, most of life is behind ... in the rear-view mirror. Very different components go into an understanding a person's value as the years pass from being born to being a senior and going through a series of stages.

There are many things that go into a good society and one where human capital can be at its best. These things have rarely been quantified, no matter how important they are to quality of life.






Overview of the PEOPLE perspective
For any individual, 'me' is the center of the universe. No matter what, an individual sees the world from his or her own perspective. Nothing else is possible. A system of metrics must therefore be able to show data that relects this reality. A person also is present in a reality that has several components. These are the past, the future and the present, all of which factor into the quality of life being experienced by an individual at any moment in time.
An effective metric for any entity must address state, progress and performance. This requires relevant data about state and flow. These elements are influenced by the individual and by the surroundings, starting off with family and friends and including also the broader society, economy and environment.
