Canada Today Dec 5, 2025 67.7K subscribers #MarkCarney #FIFA2026 #BreakingNews Mark Carney made headlines in Washington after taking center stage at the FIFA 2026 World Cup draw ceremony, where Canada, the United States, and Mexico were jointly represented as co-hosts. From the moment Carney stepped onto the stage, it was clear he wasn’t just another guest — he was the focus of the room. Confident, relaxed, and charismatic, Carney delivered a warm message about Canada’s role in welcoming the world, drawing attention not only from the audience but also from global media covering the event. Carney’s proud reaction during the official draw, where he pulled Canada’s name, electrified the arena. His interactions with reporters afterward showed humor, diplomacy, and genuine passion for the tournament — all while standing just metres away from Donald Trump, who also attended the ceremony. Carney’s presence contrasted sharply with the tension surrounding Trump, further highlighting Canada’s confident leadership on the world stage. This video breaks down Carney’s remarks, his interaction with international delegates, his subtle but powerful moments of humour, and the emotional historical story he shared with reporters. It reveals why last night’s FIFA event became yet another defining moment for Canada’s global image under Carney’s leadership. Mark Carney’s FIFA appearance became the highlight of the Washington event as he represented Canada during the FIFA World Cup draw ceremony. Peter Burgess COMMENTARY

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada is a class act ... making the US President look like a rank amateur!

Donald Trump is out-classed in almost every way by other national leaders ... and this was on display at the FIFA event in Washington DC this past Friday.

It is really quite hilarious that Trump was given a trophy ... the first ever ... to placate him ... essentially treating him like a truculent five year old!

  • Tonight in Washington, something
  • remarkable unfolded.
  • And yes, it had absolutely nothing to do
  • with politics, but it still sent a
  • message that echoed through the entire
  • arena. Mark Carney walked into the FIFA
  • 2026 World Cup draw ceremony as the
  • co-host representing Canada, and from
  • the moment he stepped on stage, it was
  • clear he owned the room. Carney looked
  • confident, relaxed, and even joyful. A
  • mood that certainly wouldn't have
  • thrilled Donald Trump, who was also
  • there. With the United States, Mexico,
  • and Canada co-hosting the tournament,
  • this was a rare moment where diplomacy,
  • sports, and global attention came
  • together, and Mark Carney was at the
  • center of it. In a hall filled with
  • world leaders, athletes, and
  • international media, Carney didn't just
  • represent Canada, he elevated it, and as

  • 1:02
  • you'll see, the world noticed. Before
  • the draw even began, Carney set the
  • tone. His message was simple but
  • powerful.
  • Canada isn't just hosting the World Cup,
  • it's welcoming the world. He spoke about
  • the diversity of our nation, the passion
  • Canadian children have for the sport,
  • and why this World Cup will be the
  • biggest, most inclusive event North
  • America has ever seen. This was Carney
  • in his element. Unifying, optimistic,
  • global, and grounded in the values
  • Canada stands for
  • to co-host the World Cup for Canada.
  • Difficult question, I know, but
  • it is the biggest of deals. Uh Giani,
  • you know, it's the number one sport for
  • Canadian boys and girls. Twothirds of
  • the country watched the last World Cup

  • 2:00
  • and we are partnered with the United
  • States and Mexico welcoming the world.
  • There's more than 200 nationalities in
  • Canada, more than 200 nationalities in
  • FIFA. The top 48 are coming to North
  • America. It is going to be the biggest
  • deal ever. Fantastic.
  • Thank you so much.
  • And then came the moment everyone was
  • waiting for, the draw itself.
  • Carney stepped up cool and composed. And
  • when he pulled out the ball that
  • revealed Canada, the room erupted, a
  • proud smile, a confident nod. Carney
  • didn't have to say much. His presence
  • said it all. For a brief moment, Carney
  • wasn't the economist, wasn't the prime
  • minister. He was simply a Canadian
  • celebrating with the world. This clip
  • alone is going to electrify audiences
  • back home.
  • Mr. Carney, do you want to start?

  • 3:00
  • Don't forget and pick the right bowl,
  • please.
  • Uhhuh. Already chosen. Okay, let's see
  • which team will be drawn by Mr. Mark
  • Carney.
  • Oh.
  • Oh, Canada. Oh, congratulations
  • Canada. Ladies and gentlemen, the first
  • team drawn in this uh World Cup group B1
  • for Canada. By the way,
  • after the draw, Carney addressed
  • reporters with a speech that blended
  • humor, history, sportsmanship, and
  • diplomacy. He began with light-hearted
  • acknowledgements, joking about Vancouver
  • weather and interacting warmly with
  • First Nations representatives.
  • This wasn't a stiff diplomatic moment.
  • It was Carney at his most human. What
  • stood out was the ease with which he
  • connected with people from every

  • 4:00
  • background. He honored indigenous
  • communities, thanked international
  • partners, and even poked fun at himself
  • for going off script. It showed a leader
  • who can command a global stage without
  • losing authenticity.
  • Thank you. Uh thank you very much uh
  • ambassador uh Batsul. Uh yeah, we
  • represents our diversity, represents our
  • values, this weather represents our
  • climate. Um, it will not be like this in
  • June. In June in Vancouver. Don't worry,
  • it'll be raining in Vancouver. Mayor
  • Sims is here. Uh, just kidding. It'll be
  • beautiful. It'll be fantastic. Um, thank
  • you for being here. Let me let me uh I
  • I'm going to do a a subset uh of the
  • acknowledgements. Uh I do want to uh
  • acknowledge the representatives uh of
  • the Squamish nation uh who are here this
  • evening. Um and the the Slaywat Nation
  • as well as well as the Missagas uh of

  • 5:01
  • the credit. Uh Secretary Bergam, thank
  • you for making the time uh and being
  • here with tonight. Um and thanks for
  • your service as governor, great border
  • state of Canada, a good friend of
  • Canada. Um, and thank you for what
  • you're doing in the uh in the
  • administration. Um, Sherpa Vancouver,
  • thanks for winning a gold medal for
  • Canada. Thank you for doing your bit
  • your service in uh in the cabinet. Um,
  • Sherpa from Mexico, thank you as well
  • for being here. Um, everyone uh tonight,
  • I do want to just linger though, Victor.
  • There we go. We've got Canada's man at
  • FIFA. Um,
  • but then came the moment that everyone
  • will be talking about. Carney's playful
  • but revealing story about the draw, told
  • while standing just feet away from
  • Donald Trump. Carney described a funny
  • exchange with Trump about Paraguay being
  • placed in the US group. The humor wasn't

  • 6:00
  • at Trump's expense, yet it subtly showed
  • how Carney can outmaneuver him socially
  • without even trying. While Trump often
  • dominates rooms through forcefulness,
  • Carney did it through charm,
  • intelligence, and quick wit, the
  • contrast was impossible to miss.
  • Now, I'm just going to actually mention
  • something that I just, you know, there
  • was the draw and the names of all the
  • teams and everything. And
  • the president uh President Shinbomb and
  • and President Trump and I were talking
  • as the draw is coming up. I don't think
  • they'll mind. Giani might mind I tell
  • this story, but I'm going to tell the
  • story anyway. It's too late now. I got
  • to tell the story. Um, and Paraguay
  • comes up. Paraguay gets picked. And I
  • said, 'Well, Paraguay, they're good.
  • They're good, but don't worry. Don't
  • worry, Mr. President Trump says, 'Okay,
  • so they're good.' I said, 'But don't
  • worry, they're not.' No, they won't be
  • because they're supposed to be You're D,
  • so they'll be in C. And then one of the

  • 7:00
  • rules kicks in and they get moved over
  • to D. So Paraguay is in the US and uh
  • the president's like well that's that's
  • not good. I was like don't worry these
  • are just recommendations we have to sign
  • off on them. I don't think
  • Giani was not he didn't find that as
  • funny as uh the rest of us did and we
  • you know the way the president sometimes
  • gets something in his mind he kept
  • coming back to that as we were going on.
  • So um so look at the draw as being
  • indicative. It's indicative uh the draw
  • this is um let me um but you know this
  • is about the beautiful game. It's about
  • the world coming together uh sharing
  • values is about peace as well. Um and
  • that's and that's true. It is a it is
  • such a unifying event. It is also about
  • winning though. Um and there is an
  • element of winning. Um, and so my last
  • uh acknowledgement I want to make uh
  • before I go into my 20 minute speech is
  • um uh is of uh the ultimate winner uh in

  • 8:02
  • my lifetime which is Wayne Gretzky uh
  • the great one. Wayne, thank you uh for
  • being here. Uh Janet uh the greater one
  • uh for being here. Their son Tristan the
  • next one uh thanks for being here as
  • well though. But no, but in all in all
  • truth, if you grow up uh in Canada,
  • certainly if you grew up as I did in
  • Edmonton, um and you saw just uh
  • commitment, excellence day in day out,
  • whether it was an exhibition game or a
  • final game of the Stanley Cup, uh the
  • class and leadership and and and that
  • these are the values that come down. Um
  • I'll say one other thing, see one other
  • thing in my acknowledgements. I'll just
  • make one other point before I go into
  • the speech. um which has been carefully
  • prepared um and uh went off script but
  • um just a sign of uh the ties between
  • our nations. um our coach uh Jesse Marsh
  • who is here um one of the great American
  • soccer players um and there he is just

  • 9:03
  • out of eyesight and and and dedicating
  • uh dedicating to Canada and you will
  • find no fiercer
  • patriot
  • than Jesse uh Canadian patriot for Jesse
  • uh to be clear. Then, as only Carney
  • can, he pivoted seamlessly from humor to
  • depth. He spoke about the values behind
  • the World Cup, unity, peace, friendship,
  • and then moved into one of the most
  • emotional parts of the evening, the
  • story of the Halifax explosion and
  • Boston's unexpected generosity. This
  • wasn't just a history lesson. It was
  • Carney reminding the world that Cand's
  • identity is built on gratitude,
  • compassion, and enduring friendship. In
  • a room full of power and celebrity,
  • Carney grounded the moment in humanity.
  • Okay. But why are we here? We are here

  • 10:00
  • um to light this tree. And I'll just say
  • a few words about this uh because not
  • everyone uh knows the full story of
  • this. Um,
  • the story of this tree began in a tragic
  • moment in Canada's history, 1917
  • and the Halifax explosion. Um, a steam
  • ship loaded with explosives collided
  • with another ship. It caused the largest
  • non-nuclear
  • explosion ever seen or felt, I guess,
  • unfortunately felt. uh 2,000 people
  • died, hundreds more uh brutally uh
  • injured, blinded by uh the glass. And
  • what happened, and it has to be said,
  • before Ottawa could respond, that's all
  • changed now, but before Ottawa could
  • respond, the people of Boston responded.
  • Uh they got a train, doctors, nurses, um
  • medical supplies, food, uh and they made

  • 11:00
  • it to Halifax to begin the rebuilding
  • and treat the wounded. Uh and that's
  • friendship, unsolicited,
  • 11:07
  • um outpouring. Um and the people of
  • 11:11
  • Halifax, people of Canada have not
  • 11:12
  • forgotten uh that kindness. And ever
  • 11:16
  • since uh that moment, a tree has been
  • 11:19
  • sent to Boston uh and it's lit uh lit
  • 11:22
  • there. And a few decades later, the
  • 11:24
  • tradition uh began here. Uh it's also
  • 11:28
  • true, I think I'm right in saying um no
  • 11:30
  • one checked their phones, that you have
  • the highest concentration of Boston Brun
  • fans in Nova Scotia, uh in Canada. This
  • is true. This is true because rightly
  • because of uh because of that reachout.
  • Um, so this is a um a tradition that's
  • uh existed for generations and we're all
  • privileged to be part of it.

  • 12:08
  • Washington.
  • Um, and this year's choice of the uh
  • tree council uh comes from the Dongs
  • family farm in Lunenburgg County on the
  • southshore of Nova Scotia. A great place
  • uh to holiday, I might add. Um, you
  • know, the holidays bring in um to
  • perspective um the ties that we have,
  • the ties of families, the ties across
  • borders, the ties of friendship um and
  • the common values that we share. And I I
  • can think of no better event um to bring
  • together the values that football
  • represents, the beautiful game, the
  • values that the holidays represent uh

  • 13:00
  • and the values that Canada, the United
  • States and Mexico share. Um we will be
  • welcoming the world um in the shape of
  • 48 well I guess 45 teams. We've already
  • welcomed ourselves. We'll welcome 45
  • teams. Um, we are looking forward in
  • Canada. Assuming that the draw stays the
  • same. Giani might have missed that uh
  • bit of the speech. Um, assuming the draw
  • stays the same, Canada will be be
  • welcoming Qatar, which put on an
  • absolutely extraordinary World Cup uh
  • just under four years ago. Well, three
  • years ago, I guess it was right. Three
  • years ago, exact. Yeah. Um, I I had the
  • privilege of being there and had the
  • privilege of seeing uh Alonso Davis's uh
  • goal. Um, yeah, yo is right. That's what
  • I said. Actually, I didn't know my Apple
  • Watch could go to 200 beats a minute,
  • but it did uh when it went in. Um, but
  • we welcoming cutter Switzerland and a
  • team to be determined later. Uh, that

  • 14:02
  • could be could be Italy. Uh, could be
  • Italy. Uh, could be Wales, could be
  • Northern Ireland, could be Bosnia.
  • Right. Wow. Okay. whoever shows up,
  • they're going to be fantastic. Um, and
  • we look forward to uh to welcoming
  • everyone.
  • As Carney continued, he highlighted
  • sports icons, celebrated Canadian
  • patriotism, honored US and Mexican
  • partners, and spoke with unmistakable
  • pride about Canada hosting worldclass
  • teams. His enthusiasm wasn't diplomatic.
  • It was genuine. He celebrated Canada's
  • youth, its multicultural strength, and
  • its global reputation. And by the end of
  • this speech, one thing was unmistakably
  • clear. This wasn't a leader merely
  • attending an event. This was a leader
  • representing a nation confidently,
  • proudly, effortlessly.
  • Look, I um I will uh just finish uh

  • 15:04
  • really where I started. Um yeah, I'll
  • say
  • It's a moment of great uh pride uh for
  • me uh as prime minister um on behalf of
  • if I may the the mayors of uh of Toronto
  • and Vancouver absolutely exceptional
  • worldclass cities that are hosting uh
  • it's a moment of pride for us to be in
  • the World Cup. It's a moment of pride to
  • be welcoming the world. Uh and it's a
  • moment of pride
  • um and
  • really
  • joy uh to be sharing this experience,
  • tonight's experience and the World Cup
  • experience um with our dear neighbors
  • Mexico and the United States. So me
  • what we witnessed in Washington wasn't
  • just Mark Carney at a global event. It
  • was Mark Carney showing the world who
  • Canada is under his leadership.
  • Confident, respected, welcoming,

  • 16:00
  • humorous, and grounded in values the
  • world admires. And yes, it must have
  • stung a little for Donald Trump.
  • Watching Carney command the room in a
  • way he rarely can. But that's the point.
  • While some compete for attention, others
  • earn it naturally. Carney earned it last
  • night. Canada stood taller because of
  • it. And once again, the world noticed.
