The railway line between Dawlish and Teignmouth runs alongside the South Devon coast. The line was engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and has been a vital link for the South-West since the mid-19th Century despite its constant battle with the sea. In this video I walked the coastal path between these seaside towns with its spectacular views alongside Britain’s most photographed stretch of railway. The area is well known for its maintenance challenges over the years, most notably after a section of the sea wall collapsed to the north of Dawlish Station during storms on 5th February 2014 resulting in the closure of the railway for 50 days. Beginning at Dawlish Station my walk took me on a steep climb to the top of Lea Mount above Kennaway Tunnel with its panoramic views over the coast and the railway. Going further west towards Teignmouth I stopped off at viewpoints including Smugglers Stream, Smugglers Lane, and Smugglers Bay on route to Parsons Tunnel with its panoramic views over the bay. From here the footpath proceeded alongside the sea wall all the way into Teignmouth. There were a number of good viewpoints along the route to photograph trains which included a number of scheduled services from GWR and Cross Country along with the English Riviera Pullman en-route to Paignton and the Class 57 locomotive ‘Pendennis Castle’ on a driver training jorney from Exeter St Davids to Laira Depot on the outskirts of Plymouth. In his book ‘The Kingdom by the Sea’ the American travel writer Paul Theroux wrote that ‘the train on the rocky shore was one of the most beautiful sights in the world’. It is truly one of the great scenic stretches of railway in Britain. #dawlish #teignmouth #ScenicViews #scenic #ScenicRailways #ScenicRailJourney #ScenicRail #GWR #IsambardKingdomBrunel #atmosphericrail #devon #devoncoast #devoncoastline #englishriviera #class57 #englishrivierapullman #railwayhistory #railwayenthusiast #rail #railwaystation #railfans #railwayphotography #railwaytunnel #leamount #rivieraline How this was made Auto-dubbed Audio tracks for some languages were automatically generated.
