- Prime Minister Mark Carney is making
- headlines again, this time in London.
- And let's be clear, this is not just
- another diplomatic trip. This is about
- Canada's future, its importance, and its
- place in the world. Carney is set to
- meet with the leaders of the United
- Kingdom, Australia, Iceland, Spain, and
- Denmark, all in one packed visit. For
- critics like Pierre Polyav, this trip is
- a waste of time and taxpayer dollars.
- Prime Minister Mark Carney is heading to
- the UK later today talking trade. Over
- the next three days, Carney will meet
- with UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer and
- the Prime Ministers of Iceland,
- Australia, Spain, and Denmark. Carney is
- also expected to sit down with business
- leaders and investors as part of a push
- to advance trade with international
- partners. But for experts and global
- observers, this is the defining moment
- where Canada proves it no longer lives
- 1:00
- in America's shadow. In the past few
- weeks alone, Carney has been everywhere,
- shaking hands at the UN, signing a
- massive trade deal with Indonesia,
- welcoming Ireland's prime minister in
- Ottawa, and now heading to London for
- talks that could reshape Canada's
- economic and security future. So tonight
- we break it all down. Why this UK trip
- matters, what Carney's global strategy
- really looks like, why the opposition is
- wrong, and how Canada is surely becoming
- one of the world's most important
- players.
- Stay tuned because this isn't just
- foreign policy. This is about who Canada
- is becoming on the world stage. Let's
- start with the bigger picture. Carney is
- on what can only be described as a
- diplomatic blitz. In just a matter of
- weeks, he has ticked off a list of
- 2:00
- highlevel meetings that would take most
- leaders years to achieve. At the United
- Nations, he met the Jamaican prime
- minister, reinforcing ties in the
- Caribbean, an often overlooked but
- strategically vital region. Back home,
- he signed a groundbreaking trade deal
- with Indonesia, opening doors to one of
- Asia's fastest growing markets. Then in
- Ottawa, he sat down with Ireland's prime
- minister, strengthening Canada's
- position inside Europe. And now he's on
- his second official visit to the United
- Kingdom in just 6 months. This pace is
- unprecedented for a Canadian prime
- minister, but it's also deliberate.
- Carney promised Canadians that the era
- of relying solely on the United States
- was over. He said Canada would
- diversify, spread its wings, and find
- new allies. And whether you support him
- or not, you have to admit he's
- 3:01
- delivering on his promise. Of course,
- Pierre Pav couldn't resist. He mocked
- Carney's trip, questioning whether it's
- worth the cost, suggesting the prime
- minister is more interested in rubbing
- shoulders with elites abroad than
- solving problems at home. But let's be
- honest, this is classic opposition
- politics and it misses the point
- entirely.
- So, you know, we just heard uh Pierre
- Polyv criticizing this trip to London.
- You know, how worthwhile are these
- international trips? I think these trips
- are really important and I think that uh
- in a world like we're living in today um
- it's good to have friends. It's really
- important to have friends and for a
- country like Canada, our prosperity and
- our security depends on alliances. Um
- that leaderto leader level contact and
- relationship is critical to that and
- maybe you know if you haven't been in
- government before in a leadership role
- 4:00
- or if you haven't been recently maybe
- you've forgotten or don't really
- understand how important those things
- are.
- Janice Sheret had the perfect reply. She
- reminded Canadians that alliances are
- not optional. They are essential. In her
- words, our prosperity and security
- depends on alliances. That leaderto
- leader level contact is critical. Think
- about that. If Canada wants strong trade
- deals, if we want investment flowing
- into our economy, if we want security in
- the Arctic or commitments met through
- NATO, these things don't happen by
- accident. They happen through
- relationships. They happen through
- presence. And here's the truth. Whether
- Polyav likes it or not, this is what
- leadership looks like. It's not flashy.
- It's not one headline making moment.
- It's showing up again and again until
- other leaders know Canada is serious.
- 5:02
- Now, let's zoom in on this London trip.
- Why does it matter?
- We and the UK for years were trying to
- get a comprehensive trade deal passed.
- uh back in what January 2024 the UK
- walked away uh from those negotiations.
- Could we see a revival in these talk in
- those talks given the times in which we
- live?
- Well, let's not lose sight of the fact
- that the vast majority of trade between
- Canada and the United Kingdom right now
- is happening under a trade agreement.
- There's a little bit left to do and I'm
- hopeful that all of the conversations
- that go on between leaders will help us
- to close that gap.
- First, there's trade. Back in January
- 2024, Britain walked away from trade
- negotiations with Canada. It was a major
- setback. But now with Carney at the
- helm, there's fresh hope those talks
- could be revived. The vast majority of
- Canada UK trade is still covered under a
- temporary deal, but the gaps remain.
- 6:00
- Closing those gaps could mean billions
- in opportunities for Canadian businesses
- and workers. Second, there's investment.
- London is one of the world's biggest
- financial hubs. Carney's background as a
- former Bank of England governor gives
- him credibility in those circles. His
- pitch, Canada is a stable,
- resourcerrich, innovationdriven economy.
- The perfect place for investors looking
- for long-term growth. The experts note
- that Carney will be talking to investors
- directly, showcasing Canada as a prime
- destination for global capital. The uh
- the the other opportunity though is
- London is of course a center of huge
- commerce and investment. And I think the
- prime minister when he's there is going
- to make sure that he's meeting with the
- private sector to show what an fantastic
- opportunity is to come and do business
- in Canada. And he's also going to have
- conversations with other world leaders.
- 7:01
- He's meeting with the leaders of Spain
- and Iceland and Denmark and Australia.
- And so it is about forging those
- alliances and building the paths for
- Canada and Canadian businesses to be
- able to trade with with partners around
- the world.
- Third, their security. Canada is a five
- eyes partner with the UK and Australia.
- Iceland and Denmark are critical Arctic
- players. Spain is a natural NATO ally.
- These aren't just photo ops. These are
- defense conversations
- about the Arctic, about NATO, and about
- Canada's commitments to global security,
- and about moving away from Trump's
- American in terms of defense
- partnerships.
- This visit is about more than one
- country. It's about positioning Canada
- at the center of multiple alliances at
- once. Now, here's something Canadians
- need to understand. Diplomatic results
- 8:00
- don't come overnight. There's no white
- smoke from the chimney after one
- meeting. Relationships are built brick
- by brick.
- So, what are you watching out for?
- Because, you know, it's depending on the
- country, the the achievements or the
- goals seem to be very different. And how
- much you can actually achieve in what is
- basically a 48 hour period, I guess, is
- a question mark. So I I don't know it
- like it's not white smoke comes out of a
- chimney or some big announcement
- necessarily that you're going to see.
- Relationships are built meeting after
- meeting after meeting. It's just not
- just in a one and you're done. And so I
- think what we're going to see out of
- this I mean the prime minister has now
- been in office for just over 6 months.
- This is his fourth trip or his fourth uh
- bilateral visit with the United Kingdom.
- What we're seeing there is a real
- pattern and a depth of those
- relationships and I think that will
- translate into business opportunities
- for Canadians for Canadian companies and
- the attraction of of investment from UK
- companies and I hope we're going to see
- that in those other countries that he's
- seeing as well.
- 9:00
- This is already Carney's second UK visit
- in just 6 months. That frequency creates
- momentum. It signals seriousness and
- it's exactly how trade deals get
- revived, how investment flows are
- unlocked, and how trust between leaders
- is cemented. This isn't about Carney
- being in fancy places with fancy people.
- It's about laying the groundwork for
- long-term gains. Gains that translate
- into jobs, stronger trade corridors, and
- a more secure Canada. And if that sounds
- boring to Polyav, maybe it's because
- he's never been in the position to
- understand how these things work. Let's
- take a step back. Why does all this
- matter? Because Canada is finally doing
- what it should have done decades ago,
- reducing dependence on the United
- States. When Donald Trump tried to bully
- Canada into a bad trade deal, Carney
- 10:01
- drew a solid line. He made it clear that
- Canada would only accept the best deal
- for Canadians. That moment shifted how
- the world saw us. It told allies and
- competitors alike. Canada is no longer a
- pushover. Now Carney is capitalizing on
- that moment. He's building ties in
- Europe. He's securing deals in Asia.
- He's renewing ties in the Caribbean. and
- he's putting Canada in the driver's seat
- of global conversations on trade,
- investment, and security. This isn't
- about being anti-American. It's about
- being pro-Canada. And it's about making
- sure that if the US turns inward or
- becomes unpredictable,
- Canada has strong, reliable partners
- elsewhere. Mark Carney's UK trip is not
- a distraction. It's the next step in a
- carefully built strategy. Critics like
- 11:00
- Pierre Polyav may call it pointless, but
- the truth is clear. Canada's future
- prosperity and security depend on trips
- like this. This is how Canada moved from
- being overshadowed to being respected.
- This is how we diversify our alliances.
- And this is how we ensure that the best
- days for Canadian diplomacy are not
- behind us, they're ahead of us. Canada
- is becoming a global player and the
- world is watching. You've been watching
