This is fiction ... but it is good fiction.

This video was a reminder of my rather unusual life experience. I have worked as an 'accountant' all my adult life, but my work has never been routine or boring!

I have always done my best to link rigorous accounting with all the complex realities of the actual world.

I participated as a 'cadet' during my school days and did some military training while at univeristy ... but I never actually served in the real military. I was a few days too young to do 'National Service' in the UK. Over the years, however, I have been a civilian protected by soldiers in a number of interesting situations.

In one UN assignment back in the early 1980s I was based in Pakistan to work on a cross-border analysis of security and development issues in Afghanisatn. Our team did several weeks of work before the UN had its funding for the work cut by US Presdient George Bush (senior) who was looking for quick acting spending cuts. Penny wise, pound foolish! Instead of saving money ...the US set itself up for almost four decades of wasted money and lives!

The video has reminded me of all sorts of other experience I have had around the world where my safety was in the hands of military personnel.
