Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
I have a low confidence that the information I am seeing from YouTube is real and reliable. There is a high volume of YourTube material which I 'like' and include in my archives, but I am increasingly concerned that what I 'like' has been curated by YouTube's algorithms to achieve YouTube goals rather than my omw!
I have a reasonably high confidence level that the informaiton documented in this particular YouTube is reasonable realistic and reliable ... though the data presented is somewhat different from what I would have expected. This may well be an indicator that the information has been compiled in large part with AI assistance and inadequate human oversight!
Caveat Emptor!
I have had Canada on my radar as long as I can remember, and I took the opportunity when I was at University to travel with the Cambridge Canada Club by air from London to New York and back in the summer of 1960 and 1961. Two planeloads of students travelled West in late May and returned East in mid-Septemner. We were allowed to do paid work in Canada, but not in the United States.
My two trips to North America gave me the opportunity to earn a huge amount of money by English student standards working for pay in Canada, and coutresy of this money gave me the opportunity to travel extensively and learn a lot about the USA and Canada.
The enormous 'money wealth' of Canadians and Americans was something that came as a huge surprise ... and gave me a much improved perspective on many of the things that interested me.
But these visits also gave me a very useful foundation of understanding about the importance of good national political leadership and the need for an enabling environment in support of society (people) and the economy (business).
Before these two visits to North America, I had travelled with my family a lot to different parts of the UK mainly visiting with relatives. During various University vacationsI got to visit France ... to play rugby! ... and Switzerland (Klosters near Davos) to ski ... and also the Channel Islands to play rugby!

#10 ... UNITED KINGDOM
- number 10 United Kingdom when the US
- slapped heavy tariffs on Canadian steel
- and aluminum in March 2025 panic gripped
- export hubs from Quebec to British
- Columbia but across the Atlantic the
- United Kingdom stepped in with a
- surprising and valuable lifeline the UK
- didn't just buy Canadian goods it bought
- gold in fact Canadian exports of
- unrefined gold to the UK skyrocketed
- that month helping drive a 24.8% jump in
- total Canadian exports to non- US
- countries london one of the world's most
- important financial centers became the
- single largest buyer of Canadian
- precious metals analysts say this wasn't
- just a fluke a combination of portfolio
- diversification during economic
- uncertainty and rising demand from the
- UK's tech and aerospace sectors fueled a
- surge in bullion shipments canadian
- refineries worked overtime and the
- ripple effect reached mining towns in
- 2:01
- Ontario and Quebec keeping thousands
- employed but the gold rush was just the
- beginning british manufacturers also
- began sourcing more raw materials from
- Canada replacing US suppliers hampered
- by protectionist policies as the
- postrexit UK looked to redefine its
- global trade identity Canada emerged as
- a reliable partner politically stable
- resourcerich and well regulated even
- more promising this shift wasn't
- temporary precious metal exports from
- Canada to the UK have continued to rise
- every month since December suggesting a
- long-term rebalancing of trade flows and
- while the headlines focused on tankers
- and tariffs the real story was quietly
- written in London's vaults one economist
- in the city of London put it bluntly the
- Americans pulled back we leaned in for
- Canada that lean meant survival it meant
- stability and it signaled something
- bigger a world no longer anchored solely
- 3:00
- to US demand in this new trade reality
- the UK helped Canada turn a painful blow
- into a golden opportunity and as the
- crisis evolved so did the relationship
- marking the beginning of a post-tariff
- era where trust and timing matter more
#9 ... NETHERLANDS
- than geography number nine Netherlands
- 3:18
- when the US tariffs hit Canada's steel
- and aluminum exports in March 2025 they
- triggered shock waves far beyond just
- metals one of the hardest hit sectors
- energy with American refineries pulling
- back Canadian crude oil needed a new
- home fast enter the Netherlands within
- weeks Dutch ports especially Rotterdam
- transformed into a vital lifeline for
- Canadian energy exporters according to
- Canadian trade data exports to the
- Netherlands surged sharply fueling a
- 32.0% rise in Canadian exports to the
- entire European Union that month alone
- Rotterdam's deep water terminals already
- among the busiest in the world began
- 4:02
- receiving super tankers full of Canadian
- crude replacing lost US demand almost
- overnight and it wasn't just about
- volume dutch refineries were hungry for
- consistent stable supply chains as
- Europe scrambled to move away from
- Russian energy dependence canada's oil
- especially Western Canada Select fit the
- bill unlike US buyers Dutch energy firms
- weren't just placing spot orders they
- were signing long-term contracts
- positioning the Netherlands as Canada's
- new energy hub in Europe behind the
- scenes Canadian officials worked quickly
- to streamline logistics and compliance
- cutting red tape and accelerating port
- clearances the result a transatlantic
- pipeline of trust reliability and mutual
- benefit trade officials called it a
- quiet revolution one that reshaped
- Canada's energy export map within weeks
- it wasn't just about barrels and tankers
- this partnership stabilized Canadian
- energy stocks preserved oil sector jobs
- and gave Europe a dependable ally in a
- 5:02
- time of turbulence could this shift
- become permanent many think so the
- Netherlands is investing heavily in
- green hydrogen infrastructure and Canada
- rich in natural gas and hydrogen feed
- stocks is poised to benefit if the trend
- continues Roderdam may no longer just be
- Europe's gateway port it could become
- Canada's energy bridge to the world when
- North America closed a door the
- Netherlands flung open a dock and helped
- keep Canada's economy afloat one tanker
- 5:32
#8 ... HONG KONG
- at a time number eight Hong Kong while
- 5:35
- much of the world focused on Canada's
- crumbling trade ties with the US Hong
- Kong quietly became a crucial lifeline
- and not just for goods but for capital
- in March 2025 Canadian crude oil exports
- to Hong Kong surged by a staggering
- 35.2%
- jumping from approximately $630 million
- to nearly $850 million in a single month
- what made it so significant this wasn't
- 6:02
- just a spike in oil demand it was a
- calculated bet by Hong Kong's energy
- traders and financial institutions as US
- tariffs crippled Canada's traditional
- trade routes Hong Kong's refineries and
- investment houses stepped in locking in
- long-term purchase contracts to secure
- energy supplies and diversify risk with
- regional uncertainty looming in China
- and volatility across the Asia- Pacific
- Hong Kong doubled down on Canadian crude
- and in doing so it helped stabilize not
- only Canadian exports but also the
- equity markets back home the influx of
- orders lifted shares of Canadian energy
- giants and reignited interest in ETFs
- focused on Western Canada Select behind
- the tankers a bigger story was unfolding
- barrel by barrel Canadian oil was being
- revalued not just as a commodity but as
- a dependable hedge in an unstable world
- hong Kong's open market structure and
- global trading expertise made it a
- 7:00
- perfect partner unlike other Asian
- buyers dependent on state directives
- Hong Kong acted fast flexibly and
- strategically financial analysts called
- it a trans-Pacific pivot a signal that
- Canada's future in Asia wouldn't run
- solely through Beijing and it wasn't
- just about oil this trade boom deepened
- investment ties between the two
- economies with capital from Hong Kong
- flowing into Canadian infrastructure
- logistics and clean energy ventures even
- after spot prices softened in April
- orders from Hong Kong kept flowing
- suggesting a multi-year commitment not a
- one-time windfall when traditional
- allies pulled away Hong Kong cracked
- open its vaults opened its harbors and
- helped keep Canada's energy economy
- alive it wasn't just a rescue it was a
- highstakes realignment number seven
#5 ... GERMANY
- Germany when US tariffs disrupted
- Canada's export flow in March 2025 one
- of the most critical responses came from
- an industrial giant across the Atlantic
- germany home to worldrenowned automakers
- 8:01
- and precision engineering firms germany
- couldn't afford supply chain gaps in
- steel aluminum or high-tech components
- so when American imports suddenly dried
- up German companies pivoted fast toward
- Canada exports of Canadian goods to
- Germany jumped 28.7% year-over-year
- reaching approximately 3.1 billion USD
- in just one month that surge helped
- drive a broader 32% increase in total
- EUbound exports giving Canada a new
- industrial foothold on the continent the
- bulk of the demand billets rods
- high-grade aluminum and advanced
- machinery parts critical materials used
- in everything from cars and trains to
- turbines and robotics but the story
- didn't stop at raw inputs german buyers
- also ramped up imports of aerospace
- components and clean tech modules
- positioning Canadian suppliers inside
- Germany's green energy transition wind
- turbines EV batteries and solar
- 9:01
- infrastructure all require the specialty
- alloys and precision parts that Canada
- excels at in response multi-year
- contracts began replacing short-term
- spot orders signaling a long-term shift
- in German procurement strategy a
- Frankfurt based trade officials stated
- Canadian suppliers stepped in where
- others stepped back and they delivered
- even concerns about transatlantic
- logistics were quickly addressed improve
- short sea shipping routes and rail
- corridors especially between Vancouver
- and Hamburg reduce delivery times by up
- to 15% and new bilateral customs
- agreements streamline crossber
- clearances making Canadian goods nearly
- as accessible as intra-Uropean shipments
- this wasn't just opportunistic buying it
- was a strategic pivot as Germany pushes
- to diversify away from Russian energy
- and reduce reliance on politically
- unstable markets Canada emerged as a
- stable trustworthy partner the result
- 10:01
- not just billions in trade but a
- potential realignment of Europe's
- industrial supply chain with Canada as a
- permanent player germany didn't just buy
- from Canada they backed them and in
- doing so helped anchor a transatlantic
- alliance that could reshape
- manufacturing for years to come number
#6 ... FRANCE
- 10:22
- six France while others scrambled to
- react to US tariffs on Canadian steel
- and aluminum France quietly became one
- of Canada's most valuable trade allies
- and in the most unexpected ways in the
- first quarter of 2025 Canadian exports
- to France surged past $3.21 billion
- making it Canada's fourth largest export
- destination but this wasn't just about
- machinery or metals agri food products
- took center stage french millers bakers
- and gourmet manufacturers ramped up
- imports of Canadian canola oil pulses
- and specialty crops seeking reliable
- supply as global grain markets tightened
- the result exports of field crops
- 11:02
- climbed by 5% year-over-year and
- Canadian maple syrup even headline
- spring food expose in Paris from lentils
- in lion to barley and bordeaux Canadian
- agriculture gained premium shelf space
- in French markets often co-branded with
- local ingredients in new fusion products
- but the partnership didn't stop at the
- dinner table france's advanced aerospace
- and heavy machinery sectors
- traditionally aligned with US and German
- suppliers began sourcing high precision
- components from Canada to fill gaps
- caused by disrupted North American
- supply chains canadian-built aerospace
- grade parts found homes in factories in
- Tolouse and Liam strengthening industrial
- ties between the two nations perhaps
- most surprising however was France's
- long-term commitment in February 2025
- French buyers signed multi-year
- procurement agreements for Canadian agri
- equipment and grain processing machinery
- contracts that lock in exports through
- at least 2027
- 12:01
- this was no stop gap solution it was a
- strategic realignment trade analysts
- believe this shift was accelerated by
- Canada's early participation in the EU's
- digital customs reform which drastically
- reduced export processing times at
- French ports the result faster cheaper
- and more secure access to Europe's
- second largest consumer market one
- Paris-based importer put it simply 'When
- the US pulled back Canada stepped up and
- our shelves haven't been empty since
- with gourmet partnerships flourishing
- and industrial trust solidifying France
- didn't just buy Canadian goods it helped
- redefine Canada's place in Europe's
- future economy number five Japan while
- headlines focused on steel and aluminum
- a more critical trade story was
- unfolding beneath the radar liqufied
- natural gas LNG
#5 ... JAPAN

- and no country moved faster than Japan
- in early 2025 as US tariffs sent shock
- 13:00
- waves through North American markets
- Japanese utility companies quietly
- secured long-term LG contracts with
- Canada anchoring a new phase in
- Trans-Pacific energy relations with the
- LG Canada project nearing first shipment
- from British Columbia major Japanese
- firms like Jera and Tokyo Gas signed 13
- to 15year purchase agreements betting
- big on Canada's stability and geographic
- advantage why the sudden urgency japan
- had seen growing uncertainty over
- Russian gas supplies and logistical risk
- from Middle Eastern routes canada
- offered something rare reliability
- without geopolitical baggage although
- Japan's LNG demand dipped 0.4% in 2024
- due to renewable expansion and nuclear
- restarts analysts say the market remains
- volatile and Japanese buyers are hedging
- their bets canada's West Coast projects
- offer shorter faster shipping lanes and
- fewer choke points compared to Gulf or
- Arctic routes and in a world of energy
- insecurity Canada became a prized backup
- 14:02
- plan if not a new primary source but
- this wasn't just about gas the ripple
- effects were felt back home in Canada
- where energy sector stocks rallied and
- export forecasts were revised upward
- investors welcome the news as a
- long-term stabilizer amid the chaos
- triggered by US trade actions japan's
- bet also sent a strong signal to
- Asia-Pacific markets canada isn't just a
- fallback it's a strategic anchor one
- Tokyo-based analyst summed it up when
- everyone looked to the US for energy
- leadership Japan quietly shifted its
- trust to Canada and this shift could
- grow japan's interest in hydrogen
- partnerships carbon capture tech and
- clean LNG could drive deeper ties beyond
- fuel shipments in a trade war era Japan
- didn't raise its voice it raised its
- hand and in doing so it may have helped
- write the next chapter of North American

- Canadian-made harvesters and precision
- planting systems to modernize their
- practices this wasn't a flash in the pan
- multi-year supply agreements signed in
- early 2025 locked in trade through 2027
- securing Canada as a top three machinery
- supplier by volume in the Indonesian

- launched a pilot program using Canadian
- bioals as a cleaner alternative to
- traditional coal starting with 150,000
- tons purchased for testing in Bali with

- snack companies began co-branding local
- palm sugar with Canadian maple syrup
- creating gourmet products exported back
- to North America talk about poetic trade

- long-term agricultural and energy supply
- chains one Jakarta based importer put it
- simply 'Canada brings what we need: food
- security modern tools and clean fuel

- exactly what happened following the
- mid2024 Canada Ecuador Free Trade
- Agreement bilateral trade exploded by
- the first quarter of 2025 Canadian
- exports to Ecuador surged 38% driven
- primarily by Agra food forestry and

- engineered timber and pulp fueling a 22%
- rise in forestry exports as Ecuador
- ramped up urban development in growing
- cities like Manta and Embado one trade
- official in Keo remarked 'Canada brought
- us better crops better tools and better
- wood that's not just trade that's
- transformation
- analysts agree this isn't a stop gap fix
- it's a long-term partnership as Ecuador
- seeks to diversify beyond oil and
- stabilize food production Canada has
- become its go-to ally offering not just
- commodities but capabilities in the
- aftermath of US tariffs this unlikely
- alliance proved one thing when global
- doors close smart nations find open ones
#2 ... AUSTRALIA
- 19:55
