  • imagine you're a pilot about to take off
  • and you see a bunch of debris on the
  • runway what Would You Do Well June of
  • 2024 an aircraft out of Bradley
  • International started shedding Parts
  • you'll never believe how this one turns
  • out 325 contact
  • departure
  • 0:19
  • 325 so the situation is United 325 is
  • 0:22
  • just taken off out of Bradley they're
  • 0:23
  • going to discover here in a minute or
  • 0:25
  • two that they shed some parts on the
  • 0:27
  • runway on takeoff and Tower
  • 0:33
  • hey to United 325 we're going to um
  • 0:36
  • possibly have to come back to you we're
  • 0:37
  • working 325 R you want to stay in the
  • 0:40
  • tower pwder and go to approach and then
  • 0:42
  • I let you know so there something's
  • 0:45
  • wrong and the pilots are trying to
  • 0:46
  • figure out what it is uh it's going to
  • 0:49
  • turn out that one of their engines had
  • 0:50
  • an overtemp it it exceeded what the EGT
  • limit now what's EGT it's exhaust gas
  • temperature and there are parameters
  • which it's supposed to stay in and they

  • 1:00
  • had a momentary exceedence it came right
  • 1:02
  • back in but that got their attention so
  • 1:04
  • they're trying to figure out what caused
  • 1:06
  • that you know was it a bird strike was
  • 1:07
  • it I don't know and so they're saying
  • 1:09
  • you know what we think we're probably
  • 1:11
  • going to have to come back uh around in
  • 1:13
  • land now the tower goes into the motive
  • 1:15
  • do you want to stay with me do you want
  • 1:16
  • to go off to approach how long do you
  • 1:18
  • think this is going to take they're
  • 1:19
  • trying to get a feel for the nature of
  • 1:21
  • the situation uh United has not declared
  • 1:24
  • an emergency yet so they haven't even
  • 1:26
  • escalated it up to that level yet um
  • 1:29
  • we'll see if they do or not here in a
  • 1:31
  • minute you 325 we're with you we have a
  • 1:34
  • number two engine GT overheat the
  • 1:36
  • engine's running fine well we're
  • 1:37
  • probably going to have to go back to
  • 1:38
  • Bradley I got to make uh make a couple
  • 1:41
  • of calls here so he said an EGT
  • 1:43
  • exceedence that's exhaust gas
  • 1:45
  • temperature that's how they measure the
  • 1:47
  • temperature of the gas coming out of the
  • 1:48
  • back of the engine and that lets them
  • 1:50
  • know that they had an overtemp somewhere
  • 1:52
  • in the engine and he said n we got to we
  • 1:55
  • pretty much sure we got to come back no
  • 1:57
  • problem United 320 I just maintained
  • 1:59
  • 4,000 fly heading

  • 2:01
  • 020 play for the visual Runway 24 okay
  • 2:04
  • 4,000 020 heading United 325 we'll be
  • 2:07
  • back with you in the show so he's going
  • 2:08
  • to get him turning around starting back
  • 2:10
  • to the airport this is an Airbus 320
  • 2:13
  • United Airlines flying it out of Bradley
  • 2:15
  • they were on their way to Denver they're
  • 2:16
  • not going to go all the way to Denver
  • 2:17
  • they're going to turn around and in a
  • 2:19
  • few minutes here they're going to make
  • 2:20
  • an emergency landing back 325 just want
  • 2:23
  • to confirm you are not declaring an
  • 2:25
  • emergency at this time correct not this
  • 2:27
  • 325 so from the Pilot's perspective this
  • 2:30
  • is not that big a deal they just had a
  • 2:31
  • little momentary exceedence you know
  • 2:33
  • what but let's go get it checked out
  • 2:35
  • let's have a main maintenance guy or gal
  • 2:37
  • take a look at it we'll
  • 2:39
  • see americ 1975 Bradley Tower turn right
  • 2:42
  • heading 280 Runway 24 clear for take off
  • 2:45
  • talking to traff Z clear for takeoff 24
  • 2:47
  • American
  • 2:48
  • 1975 and to 43 533 533 Bradley Tower
  • 2:53
  • turn right heading 280 heading two
  • 2:56
  • heading of 238 but uh there's some
  • 2:58
  • debris on the runway I don't airra in

  • 3:00
  • front of us is on Runway the C line okay
  • 3:03
  • so you hear this guy from JetBlue
  • 3:04
  • JetBlue just took off and and as they're
  • 3:06
  • they're rotating Off The Runway and they
  • 3:08
  • get handed off from Tower they're
  • 3:11
  • thinking hey we just saw debris on the
  • 3:12
  • runway and now we didn't hit it but
  • 3:14
  • there was debris on the runway and he
  • 3:15
  • just cleared the airplane behind us to
  • 3:17
  • take off so this guy's trying to get it
  • 3:19
  • out as fast as he can he's getting a
  • 3:20
  • little Tongue Tied like you know and he
  • 3:23
  • finally gets it out and says we saw some
  • 3:25
  • debris good for him this is excellent
  • 3:27
  • excellent work uh because he's going to
  • 3:29
  • cancel the takeoff clearance for the
  • 3:30
  • other airplane 1975 cancel takeoff
  • 3:32
  • clearance Runway 24 line no call on that
  • 3:34
  • one that cancel takeoff clearance uh
  • 3:37
  • line up and wait for two4 America
  • 3:40
  • 1975 533 do you have any damage to
  • 3:43
  • negative up 533 533 Roger turn right
  • 3:46
  • heading 280 then contact departure all
  • 3:48
  • right right turn heading 280 with the
  • 3:51
  • departure you have a good morning good
  • 3:53
  • guy this is St five are you able to
  • 3:54
  • squeak around the American that'll be
  • 3:56
  • holding a position on the runway we just
  • 3:57
  • got a report of debris on I would say
  • 3:59
  • the last third of Runway 24 if you're

  • 4:01
  • able to check that out before I launch
  • 4:02
  • this next departure so State five is
  • 4:04
  • probably one of the pickup trucks on the
  • 4:05
  • airport with uh an observer on the
  • 4:07
  • airport to go take a look at the runway
  • 4:09
  • so uh typically if there's any issue
  • 4:11
  • with something that might be on the
  • 4:13
  • runway sometimes there's animals wander
  • 4:15
  • out on the runway they'll send one of
  • 4:17
  • these pickup trucks out to take a look
  • 4:18
  • so that's exactly what he did with State
  • 4:21
  • five 1975 especially with that last
  • 4:24
  • report that we got from United I just
  • 4:25
  • want to check this out and make sure
  • 4:26
  • everything's okay before we get you
  • 4:27
  • going oh yeah we appreciate that we want
  • 4:29
  • to make sure the runway is clear for us
  • 4:30
  • as well thank you we'll uh we'll wait
  • 4:32
  • here that's good United 325 uh I know
  • 4:36
  • you guys are still working out an issue
  • 4:37
  • they did find um aircraft Parts on
  • 4:40
  • Runway 24 so just ahead okay they found
  • 4:43
  • aircraft Parts on Runway 24 somebody's
  • 4:46
  • shedding Parts it's probably the United
  • 4:48
  • flight we're not sure about that yet
  • 4:49
  • we're going to try to confirm uh but
  • 4:52
  • United is got a problem with one of
  • 4:54
  • their engines or they think they had
  • 4:56
  • momentarily two and two put together so
  • 4:58
  • just a heads up for you if you guys are

  • 5:00
  • working out that and uh Runway 24 is
  • 5:03
  • currently closed the state is uh is
  • 5:05
  • working on cleaning up
  • 5:08
  • debris we are planning to come back to
  • 5:11
  • the field uh how long do you think
  • 5:13
  • that's going to
  • 5:15
  • be stand by I'll get an update right now
  • 5:17
  • so everybody's stating their intentions
  • 5:19
  • United hasn't declared an emergency yet
  • 5:20
  • but they're saying I think we're going
  • 5:21
  • to come back and we're going to do full
  • 5:24
  • stop here Bradley we're not going to go
  • 5:25
  • to Denver so everybody's got to put this
  • 5:27
  • new plan into motion takes a minute or
  • 5:29
  • two to get all that going but
  • 5:31
  • everybody's being really on top of it
  • 5:33
  • right
  • 5:33
  • now power we're going to be a few
  • 5:35
  • minutes there's some large pieces out
  • 5:38
  • here all right arff that's the the fire
  • 5:41
  • truck and so the fire truck has gotten
  • 5:43
  • all the way out there now and they're
  • 5:44
  • taking a look at it they're going hey
  • 5:46
  • there's some pretty large pieces of
  • 5:47
  • metal out here on the runway uh and
  • 5:50
  • we're going to see where this goes from
  • 5:52
  • do you have an estimate of how much time
  • 5:54
  • you need to so I can let approach now uh
  • 5:57
  • it's I I don't

  • 6:00
  • half an hour so can you can you picture
  • 6:03
  • in your mind's eye a fire chief standing
  • 6:06
  • uh in his truck or got his door open
  • 6:08
  • he's got his hat pushed back and he's
  • 6:10
  • he's looking at all these parts all over
  • 6:11
  • the place and going I I don't know 30
  • 6:15
  • minutes half an hour I guess he's just
  • 6:17
  • kind of wagging it uh he's trying to
  • 6:19
  • assess what he sees in front of him
  • 6:21
  • Roger I'll let
  • 6:23
  • them five uh just hearing that it's
  • 6:26
  • going to be about 30 minutes for the
  • 6:28
  • long Runway Runway 4 to open up but they
  • 6:30
  • are going to uh keep Runway 1533 open so
  • 6:36
  • um if you need the long Runway it'll be
  • 6:38
  • a little bit while they clean everything
  • 6:40
  • up take pictures and stuff uh if you
  • 6:42
  • want the short Runway and you want to
  • 6:43
  • land as soon as possible that will stay
  • 6:45
  • open okay uh any idea what the debris is
  • 6:49
  • was it so the tower controller is given
  • 6:52
  • United all of his options you can land
  • 6:55
  • on 1533 if you want if you got to come
  • 6:57
  • back in a hurry if you're not in a big
  • 6:58
  • hurry and you want to hold for a little

  • 7:00
  • bit you can come back to the big Runway
  • 7:01
  • but it's going to take at least half an
  • 7:02
  • hour to clean it off might take longer
  • 7:05
  • they got to take pictures and all that
  • 7:06
  • stuff sometimes these things drag out a
  • 7:08
  • little bit so I want to let you know
  • 7:10
  • what all your options are what the
  • 7:11
  • pilots are concerned about right now is
  • 7:13
  • what's the nature of the debris that
  • 7:15
  • they found on the runway is it metal is
  • 7:17
  • it like little parts that came off the
  • 7:19
  • outside of the airplane or is it a tire
  • 7:21
  • now why are they concerned about the
  • 7:22
  • difference if it's a tire they've
  • 7:24
  • already raised their tires up into the
  • 7:25
  • wheel well right and they want to make
  • 7:28
  • sure that when they Wheels come down
  • 7:29
  • they're intact they don't want to touch
  • 7:31
  • down with a blown tire or at least if
  • 7:33
  • they're going to have to they want to
  • 7:34
  • know that ahead of time so they're
  • 7:36
  • trying to ascertain do you see Tire
  • 7:38
  • Parts down here or just metal Parts get
  • 7:41
  • right back to you just curious what
  • 7:43
  • what's it look like yeah I'd rather not
  • 7:46
  • say over the frequency okay so another
  • 7:48
  • aircraft calls and said just curious
  • 7:50
  • what are you guys seeing down there the
  • 7:51
  • fire chief says I'd really rather not
  • 7:54
  • say so why would he really rather not
  • 7:56
  • say well I think this is in a sense kind
  • 7:59
  • of a little Clash of cultures uh the

  • 8:01
  • pilot Aviation culture is very
  • 8:03
  • transparent very wide open with these
  • 8:05
  • things like just tell me what it is so
  • 8:07
  • I've got to make some decisions here
  • 8:09
  • based on what it is that you all are
  • 8:11
  • seeing on the ground the fire crew might
  • 8:14
  • not be the same culture they might be he
  • 8:16
  • might be a little apprehensive I'm not
  • 8:18
  • speaking on his part part I'm just
  • 8:20
  • saying he might be a little apprehensive
  • 8:22
  • about saying something out loud that he
  • 8:24
  • might get wrong and if he comes back to
  • 8:26
  • bite him later he doesn't know he's just
  • 8:28
  • going to be more cautious
  • 8:30
  • so this guy is exercising an abundance
  • 8:32
  • of caution the pilots are trying to
  • 8:34
  • ascertain what's going on they're going
  • 8:35
  • to work it out here in a minute or two
  • 8:39
  • Okie and approach United 25 to make this
  • 8:42
  • official we are declaring an
  • 8:44
  • emergency so now they've elevated 32
  • 8:48
  • understand decare an emergency thank you
  • 8:50
  • and uh when you are able fuel remaining
  • 8:52
  • and persons on board so anytime there's
  • 8:54
  • a Mayday call a pan pan pan call or just
  • 8:58
  • simply stating we're declaring an
  • 8:59
  • emergency the proper way to do it is

  • 9:01
  • mayday mayday mayday but these guys it's
  • 9:04
  • fine but they they're saying they have
  • 9:05
  • an emergency then the Tower or whoever
  • 9:07
  • is controlling them is going to want to
  • 9:08
  • know how many Souls on board that's the
  • 9:11
  • easiest way to figure out how many total
  • 9:13
  • people are on board so there's no
  • 9:15
  • confusion about the difference between
  • 9:16
  • passengers and crew it's total Souls on
  • 9:19
  • board how much fuel do you have on board
  • 9:20
  • why do they want to know that well they
  • 9:22
  • want to know number one how long can you
  • 9:23
  • stay airborne if you have to but number
  • 9:25
  • two the fire chief wants to know how
  • 9:27
  • much fuel potentially he would have to
  • 9:30
  • contend with if there
  • 9:31
  • was worst case a fire so they're going
  • 9:34
  • to give it to him in hours most people
  • 9:37
  • want in hours sometimes they want it in
  • 9:38
  • pounds uh but they're going to get those
  • 9:40
  • two things and then the third is what
  • 9:41
  • are your intentions so they're going to
  • 9:44
  • they're going to clarify all of this and
  • 9:45
  • you can see on your screen here it says
  • 9:46
  • em on top of United um 325 that now
  • 9:50
  • indicates to everybody looking at a
  • 9:52
  • scope that they're an emergency
  • 9:54
  • aircraft 129 Souls on board we have a
  • 9:59
  • 129 SS on we have 5 hours and 20 minutes

  • 10:02
  • of fuel on board everything's running
  • 10:04
  • fine the engine is within
  • 10:06
  • parameters and we're way over Landing
  • 10:09
  • weight so we're not in a huge hurry to
  • 10:10
  • come back there but we'll uh we'll keep
  • 10:12
  • it posted on gave them all three Souls
  • 10:14
  • on board fuel State system your way over
  • 10:17
  • Landing weight and again the the number
  • 10:19
  • of persons on board and what are your
  • 10:21
  • intentions it's 129 Souls on board and
  • 10:26
  • uh the engine's running fine everything
  • 10:27
  • is normal but we have had an EGT
  • 10:30
  • exceedence on number two we're curious
  • 10:31
  • debris is on the runway we don't know if
  • 10:33
  • we hit a bird or a s right at V1 swerve
  • 10:36
  • or anything but we might have taken a
  • 10:38
  • bird D United 325 okay thank you and uh
  • 10:42
  • I'm just going to give you some delay
  • 10:43
  • Beckers just to burn some weight we'll
  • 10:44
  • keep you um for Runway 24 if you need
  • 10:48
  • some time uh we are waiting on
  • 10:51
  • confirmation of uh what type um of
  • 10:55
  • debris it is so the neat thing about
  • 10:57
  • this situation is it's not a Panic there
  • 10:59
  • nobody's in a huge rush here which is

  • 11:01
  • nice they have the luxury of time but
  • 11:04
  • the controller is really doing a nice
  • 11:06
  • job talking to the pilot hearing what
  • 11:09
  • the pilot has to say and then verifying
  • 11:11
  • with the pilot what he's doing on his
  • 11:13
  • end where I've got uh because they're
  • 11:15
  • not always on the same frequency when
  • 11:17
  • they talk to the fir Tru that's down on
  • 11:19
  • the ground they're probably on a
  • 11:20
  • different frequency so the pilot can't
  • 11:21
  • hear all that so again the tower is
  • 11:24
  • relaying here's what we're doing here's
  • 11:25
  • where I'm headed here's I'll get back to
  • 11:27
  • you as soon as I've got that information
  • 11:28
  • this is an excellent uh scenario for an
  • 11:31
  • unfortunate situation okay yeah we'd
  • 11:33
  • like to know what type of lose the tire
  • 11:36
  • U you let us know what your but uh we
  • 11:39
  • can land overweight that's not a problem
  • 11:41
  • we just have to have data for it which
  • 11:42
  • we can get but but uh yeah we keep your
  • 11:45
  • post when we're ready okay he's really
  • 11:47
  • concerned whether this was a tire or
  • 11:49
  • something else United 325 okay that
  • 11:51
  • sounds good United 325 Tower did just
  • 11:54
  • get back to us they on the runway there
  • 11:56
  • are no markings on the sheet metal so
  • 11:58
  • they can't can't identify where it came

  • 12:01
  • from there's no markings on the sheet
  • 12:04
  • metal now he gave him a little bit of
  • 12:05
  • information it's sheet metal that they
  • 12:07
  • found uh you can guess it probably came
  • 12:10
  • from an airplane if it wasn't there
  • 12:11
  • before but again there again there there
  • 12:13
  • being you know abundance of caution here
  • 12:16
  • uh and we'll see what the how the
  • 12:18
  • airplane reacts to
  • 12:23
  • this I get a little time 1975 thank you
  • 12:26
  • turn right heading 280 then contact
  • 12:28
  • departure have a great day right turn
  • 12:30
  • 280 degrees for America
  • 12:32
  • 1975 uh everything okay with our United
  • 12:35
  • guys I love this part there's another
  • 12:37
  • airplane out there that is been handed
  • 12:39
  • off to departure they're on their way
  • 12:40
  • out of town but there's like a
  • 12:42
  • camaraderie with pilots and Crews and
  • 12:44
  • they want to know hey is everything okay
  • 12:45
  • with our guys over there at United uh
  • 12:48
  • you know what even though I work for one
  • 12:49
  • company everybody kind of cares about
  • 12:51
  • what goes on in the industry as a whole
  • 12:53
  • and we really do have a a bond or a
  • 12:56
  • Brotherhood a Sisterhood as well um for
  • 12:59
  • all of the concerns and I I like this

  • 13:02
  • it's a nice touch I we'll find out
  • 13:04
  • momentarily they're heading back to brle
  • 13:06
  • all right thank you 280 and we're going
  • 13:08
  • over to departure good luck today good
  • 13:10
  • luck today see you 325 would like to go
  • 13:14
  • ahead and have the equipment standing by
  • 13:15
  • for our
  • 13:17
  • arrival 3 okay what does he mean by the
  • 13:19
  • equipment he's talking about the fire
  • 13:21
  • trucks to come out and so now he's going
  • 13:23
  • to have to also brief his passengers
  • 13:25
  • because whenever you touchdown and all
  • 13:27
  • of the fire trucks come out they they've
  • 13:29
  • got their lights flashing so it's it's
  • 13:31
  • rather exciting at least to look at
  • 13:34
  • there may be absolutely nothing wrong
  • 13:35
  • with your airplane but they've got to
  • 13:36
  • turn all their lights on and then you'll
  • 13:38
  • stop usually on the runway or you'll
  • 13:40
  • just taxi off and then they'll surround
  • 13:42
  • you while they're getting out and then
  • 13:44
  • they're getting on their radios to talk
  • 13:45
  • back and forth to the flight crew uh and
  • 13:47
  • you just want to brief the passengers on
  • 13:48
  • that to say hey folks everything's fine
  • 13:50
  • here's what to expect when we touchdown
  • 13:52
  • nothing's wrong necessarily just these
  • 13:54
  • people have to do their job and they
  • 13:55
  • have a lot of flashing lights 25 they
  • 13:58
  • will be standing byog thank okay they'll

  • 14:00
  • be there when you touch approaching at
  • 14:02
  • 325 is ready to come for the approach
  • 14:05
  • 325 Rog turn left 0 4 Z left heading Z
  • 14:10
  • unit 325 so can an airplane land
  • 14:13
  • overweight yes it can it has a a maximum
  • 14:16
  • Landing weight but it can land over that
  • 14:18
  • in an emergency they just have to run
  • 14:20
  • the numbers for it the Pilot's going to
  • 14:21
  • be a little bit more cautious when they
  • 14:23
  • you know put the airplane down and so
  • 14:25
  • forth but they're going to come and do
  • 14:26
  • an overweight Landing here you at 325
  • 14:28
  • they just found some more debris on the
  • 14:30
  • departure end so uh it's going to be
  • 14:32
  • Runway 15 if you're ready to come
  • 14:34
  • inbound now5 unless you want Runway 33
  • 14:37
  • the winds right now are 230 at
  • 14:41
  • three in case by chance we're missing a
  • 14:44
  • tire okay no problem United
  • 14:47
  • 325 uh did you want to do a low PA over
  • 14:50
  • Runway 24 just to uh just to have the
  • 14:53
  • tower check it out so now they found
  • 14:55
  • more debris someplace else they're
  • 14:58
  • relaying that information information to
  • 14:59
  • the air the airplane great the pilot now

  • 15:02
  • is it's reignited his concerns about the
  • 15:05
  • tire that it might be a tire issue so he
  • 15:07
  • asks one more time are you sure it's not
  • 15:09
  • a tire now one of the the protocols or
  • 15:12
  • procedures that we have in place is if
  • 15:13
  • there's ever a problem with the landing
  • 15:15
  • gear let's say you have some indication
  • 15:17
  • that all three gear didn't come down uh
  • 15:19
  • you can do a low pass by the Tower and
  • 15:22
  • the tower will get the binoculars out
  • 15:24
  • they'll take a look and they'll say yep
  • 15:26
  • you're good all three tires are down or
  • 15:28
  • no the nose gears now whatever it is
  • 15:30
  • they'll report to you and you'll do a
  • 15:32
  • low pass now you have to have a really
  • 15:34
  • pretty good indication that you have a
  • 15:36
  • problem they don't really have a problem
  • 15:38
  • at this point there's nothing indicating
  • 15:40
  • that there's anything wrong with any
  • 15:41
  • other tires the captain's just out of an
  • 15:44
  • abundance of caution wants to double and
  • 15:46
  • triple check that they didn't find some
  • 15:48
  • sort of tire on the ground he also
  • 15:49
  • doesn't want to Spook everybody on the
  • 15:51
  • back of the airplane by doing a low pass
  • 15:53
  • by the by the tower unnecessarily and
  • 15:55
  • this one's going to be unnecessary so
  • 15:57
  • he's going to come back here's my guess
  • 15:59
  • and say nah we're not going to do that

  • 16:01
  • no that's highly discouraged by the
  • 16:04
  • company it's highly discouraged we
  • 16:06
  • prefer not to do that uh but let us know
  • 16:09
  • when two4 is open like I said we have a
  • 16:11
  • perfectly good plane we have a little
  • 16:12
  • bit of an EGT exceedence on inine fine
  • 16:14
  • uh so just let us know when two four is
  • 16:16
  • open and the another reason I want to
  • 16:18
  • land on the long runways we are uh we
  • 16:21
  • are about 10,000 lb 12,000 lb over Max
  • 16:24
  • Landing weight so they want the longest
  • 16:25
  • runway they're willing to wait for it
  • 16:27
  • they're going to burn off a little more
  • 16:28
  • fuel and the time they don't want to
  • 16:30
  • Spook Everybody by flying by it really
  • 16:31
  • is not that necessary to do so they've
  • 16:33
  • communicated all that5 understand and
  • 16:36
  • just want to confirm engine one is okay
  • 16:38
  • yeah engine one's fine and engine two is
  • 16:40
  • fine it just had a little bit of an EGT
  • 16:42
  • exceedence but it's uh it's Opera within
  • 16:44
  • limits right now okay 325 understood
  • 16:47
  • okay I'm going to keep you in play for
  • 16:48
  • the long run way will I'll uh pass along
  • 16:50
  • any updates I just uh turn left heading
  • 16:53
  • of 20 so now they're going to get some
  • 16:56
  • vectors around for a little bit right
  • 16:58
  • we'll speed this up for you uh they

  • 17:00
  • burning off some more gas got United 325
  • 17:03
  • the state did do their uh pass on Runway
  • 17:06
  • 624 they just said they found small
  • 17:09
  • pieces of sheet metal on the departure
  • 17:10
  • end again no significant markings to
  • 17:13
  • identify they also did not find any
  • 17:15
  • rubber any Wheels uh the runway did open
  • 17:19
  • so when you're ready you can expect a
  • 17:20
  • visual approach so that's the
  • 17:21
  • confirmation that the captain wanted was
  • 17:24
  • uh no rubber in that okay my tires are
  • 17:26
  • good uh Runway 24 is open again let's
  • 17:28
  • get this thing going let's come on
  • 17:29
  • around and land Runway 24 okay
  • 17:32
  • appreciate all that info and we are
  • 17:34
  • ready good approaching
  • 17:38
  • 325 visual approach Runway 24 I'll set
  • 17:41
  • you up on maybe a 10 mile left base to
  • 17:43
  • Final on the localizer if that works for
  • 17:45
  • you that works appreciate it okay visual
  • approach Runway 24 here they come night
  • uh 325 nice job cleared visual approach
  • Runway 24 contact power
  • 12.3 over to thanks for the help all
  • right

  • 18:01
  • come Tower unit 325 is uh Vis Runway
  • 24 325 Tower wind 220 at 4 Runway 24
  • clear Runway 2 325 you might be
  • surprised at how calm everybody's voice
  • is at this but these are professionals
  • they do this stuff all the time no big
  • deal here everybody's doing what they're
  • supposed to
  • do here they they're touching down on
  • 18:23
  • the runway now look at this it says six
  • 18:27
  • at the end of the runway way they've
  • 18:29
  • taken the entire Runway to roll out
  • 18:32
  • that's absolutely perfectly normal now
  • 18:35
  • if there wasn't any sort of problem
  • 18:36
  • they'd probably taken earlier taxi way
  • 18:38
  • but these guys are like hey you know
  • 18:39
  • what um there may be a problem with the
  • 18:42
  • tires we're still not 100% sure about
  • 18:44
  • that um so they don't want to like slam
  • 18:46
  • on the brakes if they don't have to
  • 18:48
  • they're just going to let it roll out
  • 18:49
  • all the way to the end nice and gentle
  • on the brakes okay everything's fine
  • they're right on center line 325 Bradley
  • Tower pay
  • attention I 325 let's call the company
  • we're going to go back to a gate while

  • 19:01
  • you get call back okay at 325 go back to
  • a gate if airport Ops could save that
  • sheet metal for us please we'll uh want
  • our maintenance folks to look at that
  • 19:12
  • see what that is 325 R be advised that
  • 19:15
  • appeared from here that something else
  • 19:16
  • seemed to be um falling from the
  • 19:19
  • aircraft as well so they're concerned
  • 19:21
  • that you know they want to see the stuff
  • 19:22
  • that they found on the runway and that
  • 19:24
  • it belonged to them and they're going to
  • 19:26
  • taxi back to the gate and have their
  • 19:27
  • maintenance folks take a look at it now
  • 19:29
  • you know you think okay this is all done
  • 19:31
  • no they just shed some more stuff on the
  • 19:33
  • runway and the tow is going it appears
  • 19:35
  • that there's even more parts that you
  • just now shed when you touch down all
  • right so this thing keeps going just
  • left of the center line at the
  • intersection of Runway 24 and5 I just
  • want to make sure you're okay to TA the
  • game I kind of missed what you said
  • there actually um but so the co-pilot
  • talking he's like what did you did you
  • say that those were the old parts or
  • they are new parts and he's saying
  • they're new parts oh okay you know
  • they're not expecting that they're just

  • 20:00
  • kind of heading for the barn here and we
  • everything looks good as far as our
  • engines and everything so uh it looks
  • like we are good to taxi to the gate
  • right 325 R we remain this frequency
  • taxi via Charlie s to the ramp the uh
  • emergency vehicles will be following you
  • in and then we'll let them know about
  • the uh fod okay what's fod fod is called
  • foreign object damage uh and it's just a
  • general term for any parts that you find
  • any if you find little rocks or Pebbles
  • on a Runway anything like that a
  • 20:28
  • cigarette butt would be a fod you know
  • 20:30
  • not anybody would be smoking out there
  • 20:32
  • but that that would anything that's not
  • 20:33
  • supposed to be there uh is fod and so
  • 20:36
  • they're saying they're referring to that
  • 20:38
  • now I bet you this Captain's going to
  • 20:39
  • change his mind here in a minute because
  • 20:41
  • he just said ah we'll taxi back to the
  • 20:42
  • gate but he's just now processing the
  • 20:45
  • new information that they just shed some
  • 20:46
  • more parts he's not sure what parts or
  • 20:49
  • how that's going to develop and you know
  • 20:50
  • what if it was me I'd say hey you know
  • 20:52
  • what I think I'm just going to stop it
  • 20:54
  • right here and let's shut down right
  • 20:56
  • here and have somebody tow us in I we'll
  • 20:59
  • see what he decides that can you just

  • 21:01
  • say so as you saw something uh fall off
  • 21:04
  • as when we
  • 21:05
  • landed affirmative it appears something
  • 21:07
  • on the it was actually the right side of
  • 21:08
  • the aircraft so it's just right of the
  • 21:09
  • center line right now at the
  • 21:11
  • intersection rway 6 and 24 we'll collect
  • 21:13
  • that as well okay Charlie to the gate do
  • 21:15
  • you have you know a gate we're using
  • 21:17
  • today and ter United 325 we're going to
  • 21:20
  • stop right here if rescue can come over
  • 21:23
  • and take a look at the number two engine
  • 21:24
  • on the right side of the air the voice
  • 21:26
  • changed that was probably the captain
  • 21:28
  • speak now he doesn't have time to relay
  • 21:30
  • it he's just like okay I'm I'm thinking
  • 21:33
  • we're going to stop here have somebody
  • 21:34
  • take a look at us
  • 21:36
  • Captain it's a good call 325 affirmative
  • 21:39
  • we'll go right now can I talk to them
  • 21:42
  • yeah change the ground frequency one to
  • 21:44
  • 1. Niner he's in contact with all of
  • 21:47
  • them okay Switching over so he wants to
  • 21:48
  • cut out the middleman let me just talk
  • 21:50
  • to the fire chief down there see what he
  • 21:51
  • sees rescue United 325 you
  • 21:55
  • copy United 325 go if you can take a
  • 21:58
  • look the number two engine on the right

  • 22:00
  • side of the airplane the tower said they
  • 22:02
  • they saw some debris fall off as we went
  • 22:04
  • through the intersection of 15 all right
  • 22:06
  • Roger that we're off your right side
  • 22:08
  • we're going to send two people out to do
  • 22:10
  • a visual inspection are you down to idle
  • 22:12
  • I got you in sight we're on the we're at
  • 22:14
  • idle and parking brake is set we'll stay
  • 22:16
  • in this configuration till you tell us
  • 22:18
  • out the way we'll do it sir thank you
  • 22:20
  • all right now that firet truck's going
  • 22:22
  • to drive around take a look this gets
  • 22:24
  • resolved they did actually shut down
  • 22:26
  • here at this point have a tow truck or
  • 22:28
  • toe uh machine come out and pull them
  • 22:31
  • into the gate good call on everybody's
  • 22:33
  • part I love how kind of calm cool and
  • 22:35
  • collected everybody stays during this
  • 22:37
  • whole episode very professional very
  • 22:39
  • measured uh nobody gets in a panic they
  • 22:42
  • don't get ahead of themselves uh all the
  • 22:44
  • training over all the years really comes
  • 22:46
  • to impact a situation like this and it
  • 22:49
  • has a really nice resolution uh is this
  • 22:52
  • normal for parts to fall off an airplane
  • 22:54
  • no and I don't know what they found out
  • 22:56
  • in the long run about what actually
  • 22:58
  • happened
  • 22:59
  • uh this is very unusual I've I've

  • 23:00
  • probably only heard about this once or
  • 23:01
  • twice in a 40-year career but at the end
  • 23:04
  • of the day uh things can happen and
  • 23:06
  • that's why we at this channel bring this
  • 23:08
  • stuff to you to let you know that
  • 23:09
  • there's professionals looking out for
  • 23:11
  • you and they bring things all of that to
  • 23:13
  • Bear uh to a always a great uh outcome
  • 23:16
  • so at the end of the day uh I've been
  • 23:18
  • flying as I said over 40 years and I've
  • 23:20
  • never experienced the situation quite
  • 23:22
  • like this but it's good to know that
  • 23:25
  • even if my aircraft started shedding
  • 23:26
  • Parts these aircraft are built to safely
  • 23:29
  • return to the ground now you know I'm
  • captain Steve fly safe here how friendly
  • everybody's being on the radio hey I
  • could use some new friends hit the
