Peter Burgess COMMENTARY

For me. Trump is more like a spoilt 3 year old than a heroic leader!

He has reached a point in his life where his advanced senility has become obvious.

The idea that he has become President of the United States, not once but twice, raises serious questions about the core design of the US political system.

Or perhaps it is a measure of the stupidity of the US population ... or their laziness or both!

I chose to migrate to North America in my 20s ... first into Canada and then later into the United States. I was an economic migrant. In the 1960s, this was a sensible move, but 60+ years later it has become anything but, and my assessment is that the US is heading into very turbulent times.

People of my age around the world know how the USA and Americans behaved in the years after WWII when the USA had the only functioning and undamaged (little damaged) economy in the world. What Americans know about WWII is very limited ... as is their interest in the subject.

One of the first radio shows I remember from my childhood had the tag line ... 'Ignorance is bliss ... 'tis folly to be wise!'. I was curious from an early age ... and I can remember looking into the back of the radio to find the people whose voices I was hearing from the front of the radio?

Years later I got an engineering degree from Cambridge ... and learned sometheing about technology at quite a high level.

But I never got to understand the 'life sciences' that were growing in importance during my college years. I remember going to a public lecture given by Crick and Watson about the basics of the 'double helix' of DNA. A 'lego' model of the double helix about 10 feet high was on the stage to help their presentation! Afterwords I made the observation that nothing in their lecture made any sense!

And the 'cutting edge' technology that I learned as an aspiring Cambridge engineering was all analog. This was replaced by digital engineering analysis over the next few years and I am bracing myself for ongoing massive change in the way engineering gets done!

While tachnology has evolved and expanded and improved over time, society and the human condition has not. In many important ways the human condtion has degrade substantially in many important ways.

  • well outrage over Donald Trump using the
  • military as pawns in a manufactured
  • crisis in Los Angeles is building just
  • hours before Donald Trump intends to
  • abuse the military again to celebrate as
  • Jen said himself donald Trump is
  • throwing a multi-million dollar military
  • parade for the Army's 250th birthday
  • which just so happens to coincide with
  • his 79th birthday but that parade will
  • be overshadowed by the more than 2,000
  • protest events planned in cities across
  • the country to declare no kings in
  • America the Trump administration is
  • gaslighting us about what's going on in
  • the streets of Los Angeles donald
  • Trump's invented threats have led to a
  • very real crackdown ice agents are not
  • just targeting criminals as this
  • administration would have you believe
  • they're going after people making beds
  • in hotels picking vegetables on farms
  • washing cars offering help at Home Depot
  • sewing clothes in garment fra factories

  • 1:00
  • and that lie has led to angry protests
  • that Donald Trump wanted to squash and
  • he wanted to look very tough in doing
  • that so he deployed the military the the
  • National Guard in California without the
  • governor's consent something that is
  • very rarely done and never for these
  • types of reasons and a federal judge
  • ruled last night that that is unlawful
  • the so-called threat posed by protesters
  • is not and has not reached the level to
  • support the claim by Donald Trump that
  • he made this morning quote 'If I didn't
  • send the military into Los Angeles that
  • city would be burning to the ground
  • right now we saved LA.' End quote
  • i don't know if you know anybody in LA
  • but give them a call send them a text
  • and find out whether any of that is true
  • state and local officials say the
  • opposite has happened the Marines that
  • Donald Trump claims he had to deploy
  • were not on the streets of Los Angeles
  • until today where they are standing
  • guard outside federal buildings and this

  • 2:00
  • video from Reuters purports to show the
  • Marines carrying out the first known
  • detention of a civilian by active duty
  • troops in Los Angeles
  • reuters reports quote 'Asked about the
  • incident the US military's Northern
  • Command spokesperson said active duty
  • forces quote may temporarily detain an
  • individual in specific circumstances.'
  • End quote now NBC News reports 'Russia
  • is doing Trump's bidding on protest
  • disinformation amplifying conspiracy
  • theories on social media about the
  • protests in Los Angeles against ICE
  • immigration raids.' quote 'Russian media
  • and pro-Russian voices have embraced
  • right-wing conspiracy theories about the
  • protests right-wing American voices
  • online are pushing the idea that the
  • protests in Los Angeles are not what
  • they appear and that a secret leftist
  • cabal tied to Democratic politicians is
  • orchestrating unrest.' End quote sort of
  • like Pizzagate the former Republican
  • governor of California Arnold
  • Schwarzenegger said this

  • 3:02
  • they make it out to uh like it is a war
  • zone the whole Los Angeles the whole
  • city or the county and the fact of the
  • matter is this maybe like 0.001%
  • [Music]
  • of the area of Los Angeles has problems
  • and there's a protest yeah and so I
  • think that this is important for people
  • to know because I don't want all of a
  • sudden tourism to suffer in Los Angeles
  • because what they see on television
  • because the media sometimes shows it as
  • if the whole Los Angeles is a big war
  • zone which isn't really the case
  • the threat on the streets of downtown
  • Los Angeles might be invented but the
  • Trump crackdown in response to it is
  • real a United States senator was pushed
  • to the ground handcuffed and forcibly
  • removed for trying to ask the Homeland
  • Security Secretary a question at a press
  • conference senator Alex Padilla was
  • exercising his rights in a state where
  • he has clear legal oversight
  • jurisdiction

  • 4:01
  • and that's what happened and what he was
  • objecting to is the cruel and
  • potentially unlawful treatment of this
  • administration against immigrants and
  • the characterization of Los Angeles as
  • needing to be liberated republicans are
  • mostly silent about this shocking breach
  • of decency some Republicans have privacy
  • voiced privately voiced opposition to
  • what happened according to Senator
  • Padilla a few have condemned it publicly
  • including Republican Senator Susan
  • Collins who said 'I think it's very
  • disturbing he's being manhandled and
  • physically removed and it's hard to
  • imagine a justification for that the
  • Republican Senator Lisa Marowski of
  • Atlantis of Alaska said 'It's horrible
  • it's shocking at every level it is not
  • the America I know.' End quote
  • it's not
  • what an embarrassment honestly it's uh
  • that's about as small as it gets how
  • weak
  • how weak do you have to be to commandeer
  • the military to fet you on your birthday

  • 5:00
  • in a vulgar display of weakness
  • that's Donald Trump
  • but just because Donald Trump is
  • throwing himself a military parade in
  • the style of Russia or North Korea does
  • not mean that America is like Russia or
  • North Korea and tomorrow's protests
  • demonstrate why despite Donald Trump's
  • actions America is still a democracy
  • my first guest tonight M gesson told the
  • New York Times quote 'We're dealing with
  • an anti-democratic force.' By now we
  • know you can't take Donald Trump at his
  • word so we were suspicious to say the
  • least when he signaled yesterday that he
  • would alter his hardline immigration
  • policies to prevent some deportations at
  • American farms and hotels after hearing
  • complaints from business leaders and
  • according to new reporting in the
  • Washington Post it is very clear that
  • Trump has no intention of changing quote
  • 'No such policy changes are underway,'
  • according to three people with knowledge
  • do we have the sound of where he said it
  • honey because I thought it was just so

  • 6:02
  • insane let's play it
  • we can't take farmers and take all their
  • people and send them back because they
  • don't have maybe what they're supposed
  • to have we can't do that to our farmers
  • and leisure too hotels uh we're going to
  • have to use a lot of common sense on
  • that so no common sense we can do that
  • to our farmers and those in the leisure
  • leisure industry because uh we just got
  • a quote from your from three people with
  • knowledge saying no such policy changes
  • are underway so which is it Mr president
  • what you doing who's running your
  • government by the way yeah I know you're
  • getting ready for that big birthday
  • celebration and the parade you got to be
  • excited boo but there's a lot of serious
  • stuff going in the government right now
  • and we don't know who's in charge we we
  • don't know exactly
  • but if the I just I don't know i when I
  • worked at the White House and everybody
  • I knew that had worked at the White
  • House before and even after when I

  • 7:01
  • worked at the White House say we all
  • believe the same thing that when the
  • president speaks sure there's things
  • that you can say in a meeting and
  • whatnot but what the president says from
  • the podium whatever podium he's in front
  • of with the seal of the United States
  • government on it if he says something
  • that is contradictory to what you were
  • doing he or she and you go do what he's
  • you that prompts a call like if that
  • were if I if that would have which it
  • happened many times when I worked at the
  • White House where Joe Biden would be
  • saying something i'm like well I'm
  • calling up like I used to call Jaki hey
  • um it's clear so my lady ain't saying
  • the wrong thing so who's lying well Tom
  • Hman I don't know Tom who's lying well
  • Tom said he didn't see I haven't seen
  • any instruction anything that changes in
  • the near future so are the words of the
  • president not enough they don't mean
  • anything for Donald Trump the military
  • parade planned for this Saturday in
  • Washington DC is more than just a
  • patriotic celebration or a nod to the US

  • 8:01
  • Army's 250th anniversary
  • it is a personal dream realized one that
  • has been brewing since he stood beside
  • French President Emanuel Macron on the
  • Sha Ziliz during Bastile Day festivities
  • in 2017
  • that event rich in pomp and pageantry
  • deeply impressed Trump to him Bastil Day
  • embodied national pride unity and
  • strength wrapped in a visually stunning
  • spectacle of tanks troops and precision
  • inspired by that experience Trump became
  • fixated on the idea of bringing a
  • similar display of military power to the
  • streets of Washington now with the
  • occasion of his 79th birthday
  • conveniently aligning with the army's
  • historic milestone he has his moment but
  • to Trump's critics and there are many

  • 9:00
  • the event reeks not of patriotic unity
  • but of authoritarian spectacle the
  • visuals of soldiers marching in
  • formation armored vehicles rolling down
  • Pennsylvania Avenue and fighter jets
  • roaring overhead strike a chord not with
  • America's democratic traditions but with
  • the imagery more commonly associated
  • with autocratic regimes
  • these critics draw immediate comparisons
  • to Russia's Victory Day parades China's
  • National Day processions in Tanaman
  • Square and the tightly choreographed
  • military displays of North Korea where
  • tanks and missiles are paraded in front
  • of a cheering controlled populace under
  • the gaze of a strongman leader this is
  • not just aesthetic concern it's symbolic
  • in the United States a nation with a
  • long-standing civilian-led government
  • and a culture of separating military
  • power from political pageantry military

  • 10:00
  • parades of this scale are rare while the
  • country has unmatched military
  • capabilities and global reach it has
  • historically chosen to project its
  • strength in ways that emphasize
  • democracy innovation and soft power
  • rather than the overt militarism of its
  • geopolitical rivals
  • aside from post-war celebrations and
  • presidential inaugurations with modest
  • military representation
  • large-scale military parades in civilian
  • centers have remained the exception not
  • the rule yet Trump's military parade
  • costing up to $45 million is
  • intentionally breaking that mold whether
  • consciously or not he is reaching back
  • through history to a tradition that
  • dates back far before the founding of
  • the United States an ancient pattern of
  • rulers using displays of military might
  • not only to celebrate victory but to
  • assert dominance consolidate power and

  • 11:02
  • intimidate opposition
  • the roots of such military spectacle can
  • be traced to ancient Mesopotamia
  • a cradle of civilization
  • located in what is now modern-day Iraq
  • and surrounding regions in Mesopotamian
  • societies rulers used visual propaganda
  • to bolster their authority and
  • legitimize their reigns palace walls and
  • citadels were decorated with elaborate
  • freezes stone carvings that portrayed
  • victorious campaigns conquered peoples
  • and divine favor bestowed upon kings
  • these images served dual purposes they
  • were both records of conquest and
  • warnings to wouldbe challenges the
  • rulers of these early empires understood
  • the psychological power of spectacle and
  • they used it effectively from
  • Mesopotamia the tradition carried on to

  • 12:00
  • the Roman Empire where military parades
  • became institutionalized
  • in the form of triumphs massive public
  • celebrations that showcased the spoils
  • of war paraded captives in chains and
  • placed victorious generals on gilded
  • chariots rolling through the streets of
  • Rome these events were as much about
  • entertainment as they were about empire
  • they were designed to awe the populace
  • reinforce the legitimacy of conquest and
  • remind citizens who held the real power
  • in these triumphs the emperor or general
  • was elevated not just physically but
  • symbolically above all others fast
  • forward to modern times and echoes of
  • this ancient tradition remain visible in
  • the political choreography of
  • authoritarian regimes
  • leaders like Vladimir Putin and Xiinping
  • have mastered the art of the grand

  • 13:01
  • parade using military display not only
  • to bolster national pride but to signal
  • strength to both domestic and
  • international audiences
  • these parades often synchronized to the
  • second send clear messages we are
  • powerful we are united and we are in
  • control to critics of Donald Trump his
  • insistence on such a parade is viewed as
  • an ominous alignment with this tradition
  • a page borrowed from the playbook of
  • autocrats rather than the values of
  • American republicanism of course
  • defenders of the event argue that there
  • is nothing inherently authoritarian
  • about honoring the military the United
  • States has celebrated its troops in many
  • ways throughout its history and parades
  • particularly after major conflicts like
  • World War II for Donald Trump
