Peter Burgess COMMENTARY

It is increasingly difficult to know what information is real and what is fake ... and AI is not helping, but adding to the confusion.

My impressions ... perhaps even conclusions ... are that Ukraine is making positive progress in its war defending against Putin's aggression.

The recent attack by Ukraine on the Kirch Bridge is a case in point, together with other attacks is the area. Russia is being told that making Crimea a part of Russia is not going to happen!

Much of this videa is 'what I want to hear'. How much of the video is true, and how much is fake, is impossible to ascertain. This confusion and/or misinformation has been getting worse and worse over the past several months!

  • crimea is no longer a fortress for
  • Russia This peninsula once called the
  • conquered land is now a place of fear
  • and desperation Military bases are
  • exploding one after another The ships of
  • the Black Sea fleet are sinking one by
  • one And most importantly the Crimean
  • bridge is no longer untouchable On June
  • 3rd the bridge was once again targeted
  • The third Ukrainian attack did not just
  • send a message to the Kremlin It has
  • shattered the patience anger and trust
  • of the Russian people in Crimea Vladimir
  • Putin is furious but he doesn't know
  • what to do Something is changing in
  • Crimea Civilians are packing their bags
  • Military personnel are leaving the
  • region The exodus has begun and this
  • could be just the beginning But what has
  • happened that has made Russians flee
  • Putin's apple of Putin's eye what does
  • this flight bring to Ukraine let's
  • unravel this silent collapse of Crimea
  • step by step with the latest
  • developments The Crimean Peninsula and
  • the strategic passes that provide access

  • 1:02
  • to it have long been at the center of
  • Ukraine's war planning For the Kiev
  • leadership Crimea was where the war
  • began and where it would end At the same
  • time the peninsula was the stage for
  • Vladimir Putin's show of power
  • That is why throughout the war Ukraine
  • has launched relentless attacks not only
  • on the fronts but also on its prestige
  • targets in Crimea Military bases Black
  • Sea naval assets and defense systems on
  • the peninsula were all subjected to
  • Kiev's pressure but none have caused as
  • much panic as the latest attack on the
  • Kirch Bridge This giant structure
  • Putin's Pride Project and supposedly

  • 2:02
  • impenetrable was once again targeted and
  • severely shaken Moreover the attack was
  • not limited to Kirch But at the same
  • time a fire broke out on the Chongar
  • bridge one of the most important land
  • lengths leading out of Crimea This led
  • to intense rumors that Ukraine was
  • preparing for a land invasion For the
  • moment Kirch is out of action and
  • Chongar is being tested by flames This
  • leaves only one land exit for those who
  • want to leave the peninsula and Ukraine
  • has taken control of the fire There is a
  • growing belief among Russians that a
  • large-scale Ukrainian attack on the
  • entire peninsula is imminent This is
  • further fueling fear and panic among the
  • population The flight psychology is not
  • only affecting civilians but also some
  • military personnel The latest call by
  • the chairman of the Majles of the
  • Crimean Tatar people Rafat Chubarov
  • clearly demonstrates this psychological
  • unraveling Fore foreign foreign

  • 3:21
  • chibarov said that civilians who came
  • from Russia and illegally settled in
  • Crimea should leave the peninsula as
  • soon as possible and directly targeted
  • the occupiers by recording his message
  • in Russian As you have already begun to
  • realize the illegally built Kirch Bridge
  • connecting occupied Crimea to the
  • Russian territory will soon be
  • demolished and you may find yourself
  • stuck in some kind of pocket,' Chibarov
  • said addressing a wide audience
  • including Russian citizens in Crimea on
  • vacation and strengthening the call for
  • withdrawal 'We can see that these calls
  • have achieved a tangible result
  • According to media reports many families

  • 4:02
  • of military officers have secretly or
  • gradually returned to mainland Russia As
  • is well known after the annexation in
  • 2014 Russia began to settle tens of
  • thousands of Russian citizens on the
  • peninsula with incentives The aim was to
  • turn Crimea into Russian territory as a
  • fate accomply and to change the
  • demographic structure in its favor
  • According to the results of Russia's
  • official Crimean census in 2014 the
  • total population of the peninsula was
  • 2.28 million The census reflected
  • 67.9% Russians 15.7% Ukrainians and
  • 10.6% Crimean Tatars The ethnic Russian
  • population has increased to 1.5 million
  • since 2014 thanks to migration and
  • families of military personnel However
  • the situation changed with the war in
  • Ukraine especially for Russian officers

  • 5:01
  • and their families Families of Russian
  • military personnel stationed in Crimea
  • are worried that Crimea could be
  • targeted in a Ukrainian counteroffensive
  • Ukrainian partisan movement Aesh made
  • important assessments on this issue Aesh
  • reported that almost all families of
  • senior personnel of the Black Sea Fleet
  • have left the peninsula The movement
  • attributes this to an internal directive
  • instructing Russian forces to take
  • heightened security measures at military
  • facilities in Crimea The partisan
  • network reported that bars reserveists
  • in civilian clothes were conducting
  • undercover patrols in the bays of
  • Sevastapole Security measures were
  • increased and attempts were made to
  • conceal equipment In addition all
  • military days off were cancelled
  • According to an ATF agent directly
  • associated with the air defense systems
  • air defense officers have started
  • evacuating their families to military
  • camps in the southern military district

  • 6:01
  • This evacuation order can be taken as a
  • sign that the security situation in the
  • region is critical In addition to
  • members of the military ordinary
  • Russians on the peninsula are also
  • leaving Crimea Reports indicate that the
  • number of Russian citizens leaving the
  • peninsula has recently reached 100,000
  • With the latest attack this number is
  • expected to increase further This mass
  • exodus is leading to significant changes
  • in the social and economic structure of
  • Crimea According to reports published by
  • the Russian Defense Intelligence Press
  • Service 80% of Russian citizens have
  • refrained from participating in planned
  • tours in Sevastapole during the summer
  • months and more than a third of
  • pre-ooked tours have been cancelled This
  • has dealt a serious blow to the tourism
  • sector of the occupied territory Under
  • Ukraine Crimea attracted an average of 5
  • to 6 million tourists a year In 2013
  • this figure was about 6 million With the

  • 7:01
  • 2014 annexation the number of
  • international tourists dropped sharply
  • Nevertheless there was partial
  • compensation with tourists from Russia
  • In 2015 for example Russian sources
  • claimed that we hosted 5 million
  • tourists but these figures were
  • exaggerated Independent analyses
  • suggested that it remained around 3
  • million The pandemic hit tourism
  • globally Crimea also took its share
  • Although there were short bursts in
  • Russian domestic tourism it is estimated
  • that the number of visitors remained
  • around 2 million in 2020 due to travel
  • restrictions and economic recession
  • Developments on the front line and fears
  • of a possible Ukrainian attack on Crimea
  • have led to a massive drop in tourism
  • Even in the summer season beaches
  • remained empty and hotel bookings
  • plummeted Although official Russian
  • statements on Crimea's tourism say there
  • are enough tourists leaked data and
  • satellite images show a 50 to 60% drop

  • 8:01
  • compared to previous years Crimea's once
  • popular vacation spots are now
  • struggling to attract tourists due to
  • security concerns As Crimean residents
  • leave the region and the flow of
  • tourists is cut off the local economy is
  • negatively affected In particular
  • tourism based businesses are directly
  • affected According to the Ukrainian
  • Defense Intelligence Russians refusing
  • to vacation in Crimea are particularly
  • concerned about the unreliability of the
  • region's air defense system and
  • potential lethal threats In addition the
  • vulnerable Kirk Bridge which has been
  • used as a military logistics center
  • since Russia's occupation of Crimea
  • poses a significant security risk for
  • tourists visiting the region In addition
  • to tourism the state of the real estate
  • market on the peninsula is also
  • deplorable Immediately after the
  • annexation Russia tried to bring real
  • estate prices on the peninsula in line

  • 9:00
  • with Russian standards and introduced
  • incentives for state officials
  • pensioners and investors In the first
  • year or two a 30% increase in housing
  • prices was reported driven by demand
  • from Russia However international
  • sanctions and the virtual absence of
  • foreign investment caused prices to
  • stall or fall slightly in
  • 2016 2017 According to official Russian
  • data the average price of apartments in
  • Crimea remained stable or slightly
  • increased in ruble terms but depreciated
  • in foreign currency terms Promises that
  • Crimea will rival the Turkish Riviera
  • have not materialized in practice as
  • tourism flows have remained low This
  • prevented the expected large inflow of
  • capital into the real estate market With
  • the outbreak of war this process evolved
  • into a more critical phase Events such
  • as the attack on the Saki air base in
  • August 2022 and the explosion on the

  • 10:02
  • Kirch Bridge reinforced the perception
  • that Crimea is not safe By the end of
  • 2022 it was reported that real estate
  • websites within Russia reported a 40 to
  • 50% increase in listings from Crimea but
  • buyers remained very low From early 2023
  • to 2025 the number of properties for
  • sale continued to rise with prices
  • falling by at least 20% in ruble terms
  • Many potential buyers are not investing
  • for fear that if Ukraine reclaims the
  • territory deeds acquired after 2014 may
  • not be recognized as valid Although
  • there is no clear official data the rise
  • in the number of listings on Russian
  • real estate portals confirms the panic
  • selling phenomenon In other words the
  • real estate market is in a serious
  • downturn between 2022 and 2025 and many
  • Russian owners are trying to dispose of
  • their properties quickly The last buyers

  • 11:02
  • are either opportunity hunters who
  • believe that Crimea will remain in
  • Russia in the long term or participants
  • in state sponsored projects These events
  • reveal that the Russian presence in
  • Crimea is weakening not only physically
  • but also psychologically and
  • strategically Russia's control over the
  • peninsula has become increasingly
  • questionable as a result of Ukraine's
  • military actions Moreover Russia's
  • military losses in the Black Sea play a
  • significant role in this questioning
  • Since February 2022 using unmanned
  • attack drones Ukraine has successfully
  • sunk or damaged Russian ships and
  • weakened Russia's Black Sea Fleet When
  • the full-scale invasion began the
  • Russian Black Sea Fleet had 74 warships
  • most of which were stationed in ports in
  • Russian occupied Crimea It sank about 28
  • of its pre-war fleet of about 36
  • warships and damaged others Russia was
  • forced to limit its use of Sevastapole

  • 12:02
  • and deploy its ships in the eastern part
  • of the Black Sea Russia's Black Sea
  • fleet was unable to operate effectively
  • in the nearby waters it had gained with
  • the capture of Crimea Russia's naval
  • defeats against Ukraine marked the
  • collapse of its historical difficulties
  • in projecting naval power and the
  • consequent tendency to focus mainly on
  • the defense of the near waters In other
  • words in the struggle for control of the
  • Black Sea Russia faced a surprising
  • defeat this loss has potentially
  • far-reaching consequences For Russia
  • this tragic situation has limited its
  • ability to project power around the
  • world through naval means In fact the
  • curtailment of the Russian Navy was so
  • shocking that Putin's last remaining
  • patrol ship in Crimea was observed
  • sailing from Sevastapole to Novarosis
  • Against all odds the withdrawal of
  • Russian warships from Crimea could be a
  • sign that Ukraine is actually winning
  • the war at sea When Russia first

  • 13:02
  • blockaded Ukrainian ports on the eve of
  • a fullscale invasion in February
  • 2022 few believed that the dilapidated
  • Ukrainian Navy could seriously challenge
  • the dominance of the powerful Russian
  • Black Sea Fleet But once hostilities
  • began it quickly became clear that
  • Ukraine had no intention of giving Putin
  • control of the Black Sea without a fight
  • Ukraine used a combination of
  • domestically produced drones and
  • missiles along with long range weapons
  • supplied by the West to deliver a series
  • of devastating blows against Putin's
  • fleet Cruise missiles delivered by
  • Kiev's British and French partners
  • played an important role in this
  • campaign But the most effective weapons
  • of all were Ukraine's rapidly developing
  • fleet of innovative naval drones In
  • other words Ukraine with its own
  • capabilities and with western support
  • was able to confine Russia to the Black
  • Sea Roman an experienced reserve colonel

  • 14:02
  • and flight instructor of the armed
  • forces of Ukraine gave an important
  • assessment of the strategic situation in
  • Crimea and the future of the Russian
  • presence in the region According to
  • Sweden Crimea's geographical location
  • has turned into an operational trap for
  • Russia The peninsula is easily
  • surrounded by Ukrainian troops advancing
  • from the mainland making it increasingly
  • difficult for Russian forces to defend
  • it Crimea is like a strategic mousetrap
  • and it is almost impossible to
  • sustainably protect the Russian
  • occupiers there
  • said he believes that with the
  • increasing pressure on the peninsula the
  • most logical solution for Russia is to
  • make a strategic withdrawal from Crimea
  • as in the case of the Black Sea Fleet
  • This means not only a military
  • withdrawal but also a psychological and
  • strategic acceptance According to
  • Satan's analysis Russia's withdrawal
  • from Crimea will take place by gradually

  • 15:01
  • reducing its military and civilian
  • presence on the peninsula First Russian
  • aviation forces will leave the peninsula
  • followed by air defense systems ground
  • troops and civilian occupiers This
  • withdrawal he says shows that Russia's
  • ability to hold on to Crimea is
  • gradually diminishing and that the
  • region is becoming vulnerable The
  • withdrawal of the Black Sea fleet is a
  • precursor move for other Russian
  • military and civilian elements in Crimea
  • In practice this withdrawal is a sign
  • that Russia has begun to abandon the
  • peninsula and is signaling a significant
  • strategic loss He also emphasizes that
  • this process could take several months
  • to a year as such a withdrawal requires
  • logistical and strategic planning but
  • events in the diplomatic arena in recent
  • months risk overshadowing Ukraine's
  • success US President Donald Trump is
  • reportedly considering recognizing
  • Crimea as part of Russia in exchange for

  • 16:00
  • a ceasefire in Ukraine Trump is
  • threatening to withdraw if a peace
  • agreement is not reached soon but it is
  • Ukraine not Russia that Trump is
  • pressuring The Kremlin has long been
  • asking Washington to step aside so that
  • Russian troops can finish the job more
  • quickly Unable to end the war in 24
  • hours or 100 days and clearly unwilling
  • to demand anything from Moscow Trump may
  • once again be offering Ukraine an
  • ultimatum Surrender more or fight alone
  • Crimea was where the war started Could
  • it really be the key to ending the war
  • ukraine surrendered Crimea without a
  • fight naively hoping that Putin would
  • stop It was also powerless to resist
  • After the Maidon revolution the country
  • was almost decapitated with the
  • pro-Russian president and his cronies
  • fleeing to Rosttov on dawn While daily
  • farewell ceremonies were being held for
  • the pro-EU protester who was snatched
  • from life in Kev's independent square
  • and while parliament was busy appointing

  • 17:01
  • an interim government unmarked Russian
  • troops entered Crimea Putin's takeover
  • of the peninsula lasted less than a
  • month At the time pro-Russian sentiment
  • was strong with polls showing that
  • between 35% and 54% of residents favored
  • joining Russia but more than 15,000
  • people rallied under the Crimean
  • Parliament to protest the occupation
  • just before it was raided by Russian
  • special forces The so-called referendum
  • that followed claimed 97% support for
  • annexation Numerous international
  • reports proved that the results were
  • fraudulent The West looked the other way
  • Desperate not to provoke Russia or get
  • into a bigger war How did this happen
  • putin came for more He launched the
  • occupation of the Donetsk and Luhansk
  • regions Having been appeased by Europe
  • in the Minsk 1 and Minsk 2 ceasefire
  • agreements Putin then marched on Kiev
  • Today Trump's administration is

  • 18:00
  • repeating the same mistake It thinks
  • that Putin will stop killing when his
  • aggression is rewarded Ukrainians will
  • not accept this Washington has been too
  • comfortable treating Crimea and other
  • occupied territories in Ukraine as
  • lifeless pieces of land that Keev and
  • Moscow cannot get along with Steve
  • Wickoff says it should be easy for
  • Ukraine to give up mostly
  • Russian-speaking regions It is easy for
  • people to think of it that way to close
  • their eyes to how the Kremlin quietly
  • cleansed the captured territories
  • intimidating persecuting imprisoning
  • torturing and deporting local people who
  • opposed the regime Crimea's indigenous
  • taters were the hardest hit Survivors of
  • deportations during Stalin's rule they
  • returned home under the Ukrainian flag
  • in the 1990s only to watch Putin finish
  • the job Today as far as we know over a
  • hundred Crimean Tatars are imprisoned in
  • Crimea and Russia Since then more than a
  • million Russians have migrated to the
  • peninsula and replace the pro- Ukrainian

  • 19:01
  • population Today they form the majority
  • in Crimea With each passing year ties
  • between the peninsula and Ukraine weaken
  • and Russia's grip on the region tightens
  • A new generation is growing up that has
  • never known Ukraine as its home learning
  • in school that the Nazis bombed them
  • from Kiev The population es and flows
  • depending on who holds power When
  • Ukraine attacked the Russian military
  • base in Crimea for the first time in
  • August 2022 hundreds of Russians packed
  • their belongings and headed for the
  • Kirch Bridge On that day a Ukrainian
  • woman from Django in northern Crimea
  • shared a critical message Rats are
  • fleeing the sinking ship she wrote
  • Ukrainians fleeing the occupation are
  • waiting to return home Trump's plan to
  • hand over Crimea in exchange for a
  • ceasefire is doomed to fail Ukrainians
  • will not accept it because they believe
  • it guarantees another war Trump's art of
  • the deal is to seed Crimea and freeze
  • the fighting on the rest of the front

  • 20:01
  • line Such a peace will not work The
  • American president must understand the
  • essence of this conflict As long as
  • Putin believes that Ukraine is not a
  • real country that Ukrainians and
  • Russians are one people and that
  • international law can be bent to suit
  • his appetites he will continue to tear
  • Ukraine apart In some Crimea with its
  • historical and strategic importance
  • plays an indispensable role for both
  • Russia and Ukraine However the
  • uncertainty of war the risk of conflict
  • and sanctions have had a negative impact
  • on everything from tourism to the real
  • estate market The tendency of Russian
  • military officers families to migrate to
  • safe zones is an indication that the
  • Russian presence on the peninsula is
  • also being shaken This picture may open
  • the door to tougher and tougher
  • negotiations on the status of Crimea in
  • the coming period and perhaps even to
  • hot conflict scenarios Crimea is not

  • 21:01
  • only a geographical region but also a
  • symbol that plays a major role in
  • Moscow's and Kiev's perception of
  • national identity and security Therefore
  • every development there continues to
  • have a ripple effect on the overall war
  • and international diplomacy Stay tuned
  • for further developments Thank you for
