I have watched videos of the VE Day parade in London over and over again in the last few days.
I have had a flood of memories triggered by the various elements of the parade.
Not to mention, being somewhat overwhelmed by the idea that I am still alive for the celebration of 80 years post WWII.
I am doing all I can to remind people who are younger than me, that WWII may not be part of their memory, it was an important event, and the success of our modern world has only been possible because the allies won that war.
Donald Trump is not much younger than me ... but sufficiently younger to have grown up very differently ... and of course as an American and not a Brit.
Like Donald Trump, I did not serve in the military. In my case, I was born late anough not to be eligible for British Military service. I missed conscription in the UK by 8 days! When I became a 'landed immigrant' in the US, I had to register for the US draft, but was in my late 20s and did not get called up even though the Vietnam War was still in progress. Apparently Trump was not fit enough to serve. Why am I not surprised!
The London parades have reminded me of the value of 'service' and the importance of 'discipline'.
As a child, I lived not far from ... about 30 miles ... from the Deveonport Naval Shipyard and our family visited the 'Navy Days' for several years when I was growing up. In my early teens, my goal was to join the navy. Tht never happened, but I learned something of the navy and its ships at the annual Navy Days when visitors had the opportunity to see the ships up close.
The VE Day parade 2025 ... 80 years on ... has given me a lump in my throat. My life has been for the most part very peaceful.
Sadly peace is fragile.
The presence of a small contingent of troops from the Ukraine military at the London VE parade is a reminder of this!

Video shows the parade marching up Birdcage Walk and the return down The Mall.
A lot busier than my previous video and did not have the access that I had on the early morning rehearsal.
