I grew up in a little town called Okehampton ... with a population of around 4,000 people. Though it was a small town, it had a long history. It was recorded in the Doomsday Book going back to William the Conqueror in the 11th ventury who built a castle to protect his realm!
Okehampton was not far ... about 30 miles ... from Plymouth and the Devonport Naval Dockyard. As a young boy, I wanted to join the Royal Navy and went to the 'Navy Days' for several years in a row from being just 8 years old to around 13. I did get tp play cricket against Dartmouth ... the Royal Navy college in Devonshire. During these 'Navy Days' visits, I got to go inside submarines and walk around battleships and aircraft carriers as well as all sorts of smaller ships. As an older boy at boarding school we visited Devonport for a 'field day' during which time I got to learn about some 20 different ways a Royal Marine could kill an adversary with his bare hands! Useful knowledge, that prepared me for an exciting life! On one of these Navy Day visits, I got to see HMS Amethyst, a small ship that had been trapped up the Yangtzee River in China when Mao was taking over China and had had to fight its way down the river and out to sea. The whole bridge and superstructure had been 'shot away' but the ship had stayed afloat and then navigated all the way from China back to the UK!
For me. these videos of the 'pomp and ceremony' of the British military in London is a reminder of the ongoing amazing competence of the British military. Though much small than it was generations ago back in the 1930s ...say ... the British military personnel in all the services are likely the best trained in the world by a mile! The tradition that is on display in the various 'parades' in London is a good show ... but in action these same personnel are among the best trained military folk on the planet.
I never got to 'serve' in the military ... neither the US military nor the British ... but have huge respect to the men and women who do serve!
