In February 1967. my wife and I travelled from Montreal to Vancouver by train ... Canadian National. It was a fascinating trip.
About a day and a half out from Vancouver the train has some sort of a technical issue and were were stuck in the middle of the Jasper National Park for more than a day before a replacement locomotive came to our rescue. The scenery was spectacular ... and though it was winter the train heating was still working and the dining car accessible.
More people crossed Canada back then using Canadian Pacific than Canadian National and there was a lot of animated discussions by travellers about which was the best route in terms of service and scenery. In many ways, both routes are winners!
