DEMOCRATS IN DISARRAY The Damage Report: Democrat Drops INFURIATING Claim Over Revealing Blow Against AOC Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVa3X5wgtp4 Peter Burgess COMMENTARY Like most ordinary people in the United States, I have paid litle attention to either local or national politics for most of my life. I knew a few of the names of the hig high profile politicians, but not so much about the specific of their 'policies'. I think I paid a little more attention to the 'economics' of various politicians and parties. My interest in economics went into overdrive in the early 1970s with the Arab oil embargo and the establishment of OPEC. Many changes were already in progress prior to the oil shock of 1973 as Nixon, Ford and Carter struggled with issue after issue after issue. In many ways, President Carter made the most positive contribution in this period to get the US back on track. But it was Ronald Reagan that was able to take credit for the state of the USA in 1980 which had become considerably better during the Carter years. Reagan was able to 'double down' in support of a lot of policies that were kind to investors, but not so much for workers. The argument that workers would benefit from 'Trickle Down' never materialised, though it was a good Republican talking point in the early 1980s. Reagan set in motion policies that encouraged outsourcing of manufacturing to various low wage cost areas of the world ... including Mexico, China and other low wage countries. Meanwhile what had been the US industrial heartland became a post industrial wasteland. Much of America's manufacturing plants were shuttered and the worlers laid off. For the people of the region, this was a long lasting nightmare ... that really never got addressed. Workers who had been among the best paid in the world, were laid off never to be employed again at anything but the lowest of wages! For investors, many companies survived and then prospered by outsourcing production to low wage countries and selling into the United States. This started ealry in the 1980s and by the end of the 1990s it was a dominant part of the US economy. To the extent that there was investment in new manufacturing facilities, these were being located almost exclusively in the non-union lower wage parts of the USA, mainly in Southern States. George Bush had to address two big issue. The first was the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. George Bush mobilized a massive international coalition to push Iraq out of Kuwait using military force. Most everone in the 'free world' joined in to make this happen. It took several months to assemble the required military assets. When the time came for the order to go ... it was just a few days and the Irak militayr was defeated and out of Kuwait! George Bush did not push all the way to Baghdad, but ended the was as soon as the Iraq military were defeated and out of Kuwait ... the basic goal of the operation. The second big issue was the poor state of the US economy after 8 years of 'Reaganomics'. At ome pont George Bush made the commitment to 'No New Taxes', but had to go back on htis when the economic situation degraded. And then it was the turn of Clinton to be President, and he bacame the beneficiary of the difficult decisions that Bush had had to make. From an economic standpoint Clinto did well! This lasted for eight years! George Bush 2 became President in 2000 and soon after in September 2001 there was the World Trade Center attack in New York. The first plane crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11th at 8:46 AM followed by a second plane This was a huge shock to the USA, but also to the world at large. A lot changed as a result of this attach ... much of which remains unresolved to this time (2025). Peter Burgess | |||||||||
