Peter Burgess COMMENTARY

Like most ordinary people in the United States, I have paid litle attention to either local or national politics for most of my life. I knew a few of the names of the hig high profile politicians, but not so much about the specific of their 'policies'.

I think I paid a little more attention to the 'economics' of various politicians and parties. My interest in economics went into overdrive in the early 1970s with the Arab oil embargo and the establishment of OPEC. Many changes were already in progress prior to the oil shock of 1973 as Nixon, Ford and Carter struggled with issue after issue after issue. In many ways, President Carter made the most positive contribution in this period to get the US back on track.

But it was Ronald Reagan that was able to take credit for the state of the USA in 1980 which had become considerably better during the Carter years. Reagan was able to 'double down' in support of a lot of policies that were kind to investors, but not so much for workers. The argument that workers would benefit from 'Trickle Down' never materialised, though it was a good Republican talking point in the early 1980s. Reagan set in motion policies that encouraged outsourcing of manufacturing to various low wage cost areas of the world ... including Mexico, China and other low wage countries.

Meanwhile what had been the US industrial heartland became a post industrial wasteland. Much of America's manufacturing plants were shuttered and the worlers laid off. For the people of the region, this was a long lasting nightmare ... that really never got addressed. Workers who had been among the best paid in the world, were laid off never to be employed again at anything but the lowest of wages!

For investors, many companies survived and then prospered by outsourcing production to low wage countries and selling into the United States. This started ealry in the 1980s and by the end of the 1990s it was a dominant part of the US economy.

To the extent that there was investment in new manufacturing facilities, these were being located almost exclusively in the non-union lower wage parts of the USA, mainly in Southern States.

George Bush had to address two big issue.

The first was the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. George Bush mobilized a massive international coalition to push Iraq out of Kuwait using military force. Most everone in the 'free world' joined in to make this happen. It took several months to assemble the required military assets. When the time came for the order to go ... it was just a few days and the Irak militayr was defeated and out of Kuwait!

George Bush did not push all the way to Baghdad, but ended the was as soon as the Iraq military were defeated and out of Kuwait ... the basic goal of the operation.

The second big issue was the poor state of the US economy after 8 years of 'Reaganomics'. At ome pont George Bush made the commitment to 'No New Taxes', but had to go back on htis when the economic situation degraded.

And then it was the turn of Clinton to be President, and he bacame the beneficiary of the difficult decisions that Bush had had to make. From an economic standpoint Clinto did well! This lasted for eight years!

George Bush 2 became President in 2000 and soon after in September 2001 there was the World Trade Center attack in New York. The first plane crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11th at 8:46 AM followed by a second plane This was a huge shock to the USA, but also to the world at large. A lot changed as a result of this attach ... much of which remains unresolved to this time (2025).

  • Jerry Connelly of course was chosen
  • recently by the Democrats to be the top
  • Dem on the oversight committee and he
  • defended his victory over AOC with an
  • explanation for why it should be him
  • that honestly I had never considered
  • before listen to this the decision about
  • leadership ought to always be based on a
  • proven record skill set competence
  • capability uh and your plan for moving
  • forward I've never had my chance to be a
  • ranking member or chairman of a full
  • committee this is it and I've got the
  • bonafides and the credentials over 16
  • years that my my colleagues you know
  • looked at examined validated and decided
  • that's what we need we need the best
  • General we can put on the Battleground
  • with four more years prospectively of
  • Donald Trump and that's what the
  • Democratic caucus overwhelmingly decided
  • to
  • do so is some of that is fine but I love

  • 1:01
  • the core of it is I never had my chance
  • I never got to and I W I want to I
  • didn't and now I want to oh I hadn't
  • considered that you wanted the position
  • I hadn't considered that it's owed to
  • you or what I hadn't thought about that
  • I apologize I am obviously biased we all
  • know this and I just I got distracted
  • with like being worried about what could
  • be done with the role and whether the
  • person in charge would have the Vigor to
  • like actually investigate things and
  • make the case for the Democrats I got so
  • distracted with that I didn't stop to
  • consider whether you wanted it well that
  • obviously changed and to be clear I dm'd
  • AOC and I was like hey wait just for the
  • record did you want this position she
  • was like No And so I was like oh well
  • that is the only thing that really
  • matters and so forget about AOC we got
  • Connelly I'm on board what do you think
  • wait she she she replied for real I'm
  • kiding no obviously she didn't reply to
  • me but anyway look at you in the D that

  • 2:01
  • was a bit that I was doing no no no but
  • this is just amazing like also I I like
  • I think many people watching this even
  • just in terms of like who's going to
  • click on this video is is asking
  • themselves who who what why like the
  • fact that we've never heard about Jerry
  • Connelly in since Trump came into office
  • in 2016 right like the fact that we
  • don't know like his proven record and
  • I'm sure he's got some good things he's
  • done I'm not saying he hasn't but aoc's
  • out here you know making like moment
  • after moment after moment and it's not
  • just CU she's easy on the eyes it's
  • because of what she's saying it's
  • because of her taking on um oligarchy
  • and her taking on the
  • military-industrial complex right it's
  • her talking um about like fascism openly
  • and not and being not being afraid to
  • say it um she and and her actually
  • speaking in a way that people can
  • understand so again these are the kinds

  • 3:01
  • of leaders that we need but this is this
  • is just so crystallized John of what is
  • wrong with the Democratic party which is
  • pecking order it's my time it's my turn
  • yeah Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign
  • slogan was what it's her turn for where
  • where's the line what are you what what
  • are you even talking about she was
  • married to the president yes she was a
  • Senator not a very good one like what
  • what is it what is this like paid my
  • dues yeah yeah yeah but you're not
  • speaking to anyone you're irrelevant
  • nobody likes you and you haven't done
  • anything that has made people stick
  • their neck out for you that is in part
  • why people like AOC and other Squad
  • members were able to get their seats
  • right and so this is just it's this will
  • crush us this will kill us and yes when
  • you know when Gavin Nome or Pete Budaj
  • says it's my turn okay look even though
  • I've got like nothing to offer anyone on

  • 4:00
  • it's my turn let's
  • remember where that's landed us yeah
  • exactly uh I think I think we're going
  • to close out the hour on this story so I
  • just want to add um I understand he's
  • focused on himself as an individual when
  • is it Progressive's turn like ever in
  • any context to have one single person
  • like the bar is so high for us to ever
  • have any power influence that it is
  • utterly irrelevant that our movement has
  • given us the greatest star of the
  • democratic party for this generation
  • like it's utterly irrelevant you could
  • have any number of milk toast copycat
  • centrists they will always have more
  • opportunities having a dynamic person
  • with an amazing life story has
  • demonstrated that they can do the work
  • it's irrelevant doesn't matter get in
  • line and I don't even like it's I don't
  • even have a huge thing against Jerry
  • Connelly but like you were going up
  • against AOC so we get to be mad that you
  • have the position now I know that you
  • want it I'm sure that you prefer would

  • 5:00
  • have wanted it you know 16 years ago or
  • whatever but now we're in this situation
  • and it shouldn't be you anyway I also
  • want to mention by the way uh more news
  • coming out that he apparently um has
  • several uh insider trading and conflict
  • of interest possible issues so he
  • violated the stop trading on
  • Congressional knowledge stock act uh he
  • failed to disclose three stock
  • transactions ahead of the 45-day
  • reporting deadline back in January of
  • last year uh in his defense they all do
  • this I I used have Dave lethal on the
  • show all the time they all do this um
  • but all three of the stocks that he
  • failed to disclose also have government
  • contracts what do you know and so these
  • are contractors to the Pentagon and and
  • energy companies and stuff like that so
  • you know that's not great necessarily
  • when you're going to be in charge of
  • oversight but again who am I to say who
  • we should choose he wants it and and
  • John I think it's really important for
  • Democrats and all people to understand

  • 6:01
  • like the longer you've been in DC the
  • less people trust you and and that's
  • just you know that is because people
  • don't trust politicians they don't see
  • them delivering for them in their
  • everyday lives right and you see that
  • even with someone like AOC the longer
  • she's in office the more people are like
  • I don't know have you done political
  • revolution yet you know and it's like
  • she kind of just got there but again
  • like someone like Connelly someone that
  • old someone who's been around for that
  • long you could even argue that Bernie
  • Sanders didn't go harder against Joe
  • Biden in 2020 in part because he worked
  • alongside him as a senator for years and
  • considered him a colleague so it it
  • actually while we don't want billionaire
  • outsiders with zero political experience
  • running the country it does say
  • something that you haven't been mired in
  • the muck of DC and you haven't been sort
  • of you're remade into kind of a doue of

  • 7:00
  • you know of the status quo and so let's
  • just remember how excited people are
  • when there is someone who's kind of new
