Peter Burgess COMMENTARY

Musk is losing political momentum in Washington ... but even better, stock markets in Europe have sold off Tesla at scale and prices of Tesla stock are down by substantially more than 50% in the last month in all the big markets in Europe!

While Musk has been associated with some great engineering accomplishments, at a human level he is a disaster. Though he has amassed economic wealth and power, he is not above the law and needs to be held accountable for his actions in the way any other person would be!

Sadly ... I am not sure the American legal system will be able to do this!
I wrote the above note 3 weeks ago ... and the Trump / Musk collaboration hs gone from bad to worse.

I was born in the UK in 1940 in the early days of WWII ... just 4 months before the Dunkerk evacuation. At that point in time Nazi Germany has conquered Europe and was hell-bent on conquering the UK. The Battle of Britain took place over several months in late 1940.

It was not until after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 ... more than 2 years after the start of the world war ... that the USA joined in and declared war aainst Japan and Nazi Germany.

The good news and the bad news is that President Roosevelt did all he could to be of assistance to Great Britain within the political constraints that he had to handle. Britain started to get important supplies and military equipment from the USA but at commercial prices and not as gifts! Britain also got supplies and military equipment via a lend lease program that served to finance all of these aupplies and equipment. None of this was a simple 'gift'.

Bluntly put ... it brought about the end of the British Empire as a major power. Britain was paying back war debt to the United States for many years after the end of the War. I know that when I went to boarding school in 1953, Britain was still faced with very onerous 'rationing'.

a few years later in 1960 and then again in 1961 I spent my summer vacation time in North America. Interestingly, Canada let us work for pay, but not the United States.

A few years later when I had a broad skill set from both academic and professional education, I ... together with my new wife ... migrated to Canada, and then a year later to the United States. My earnings in North America were are least 5 times what they had been in the UK ...

  • turns out people do not like having the
  • world's richest unelected man tearing
  • through the Departments and agencies
  • that administer our federal government
  • yesterday we started seeing some real
  • push back with protests in state
  • capitals and large cities Across the
  • Nation we saw signs like this on an
  • overpass in the most populous County in
  • New Jersey reading musk rated Treasury
  • and musk stole your tax data in addition
  • to these citizen protests lawmakers have
  • been speaking out holding events of
  • Treasury outside the department of labor
  • today at the EPA and after a few days of
  • this we are seeing that Pressure Works
  • in just the past few hours Wall Street
  • Journal reported that Marco ell a
  • 25-year-old Doge staffer who was given
  • access to treasury files the most
  • sensitive payment system in the entire
  • government resigned after he was con
  • connected to racist posts from a now
  • deleted social media account earlier
  • today a federal judge limited Doge from
  • accessing information at the treasury
  • Norm Eisen served as ethics Chief under
  • President Barack Obama he's now
  • executive chair of State democracy
  • Defenders fan Defenders fund a

  • 1:01
  • nonpartisan Watchdog group that filed
  • that law suit to limit the musk team's
  • access to treasury data and he joins me
  • now ... um Norman ... first of all this seems
  • like a big win and significant what did
  • the judge order and what was your
  • case um Chris um our case was that Elon
  • Musk and others like him have no
  • business pawing over sensitive data
  • inside of Treasury affecting every
  • American Financial records IRS records
  • uh and um the judge uh wrote an order
  • urged the parties to consider it ask
  • some very intelligent probing questions
  • about access to this data and uh
  • building on the foundation that she gave
  • us we agreed and she entered an order uh
  • that um essentially no one outside of
  • Treasury can have access to these

  • 2:00
  • records and even within treasury the
  • access must be severely limited ... so uh
  • and now we'll have a schedule for a uh
  • preliminary injunction a more permanent
  • relief. We think we have a strong case
  • that this information is protected under
  • federal law uh and we're going to argue
  • that case to the judge but getting that
  • order signed by the judge today was one
  • of a number of significant wins Trump's
  • autocratic shock and a Chris is being
  • met with democracy shock and awe and a
  • series of Court wins in big cases across
  • the country uh proving that the
  • Constitution and laws can still
  • counteract this authoritarian
  • push we should we should just know some
  • of that reporting today I just to to
  • enter into the record of the individual
  • at issue here who was apparently the one
  • with access to the most sensitive
  • payment system um this is from The Wall
  • Street Journal reporting of this account

  • 3:00
  • connected to him uh just for the record
  • I was racist before it was cool the
  • account posted in July according to
  • journals review of archiv post you could
  • not pay me to marry outside my ethnicity
  • the account wrote in September according
  • to Wall Street Journal normalize Indian
  • hate the account wrote the same month in
  • reference to a post noting the
  • prevalence of people from India in
  • Silicon Valley so that's the some of the
  • views the individual that has now been J
  • blocked by a judge's order and then
  • resigned you mentioned thank you my
  • friend

    TESLA CAR SALES IN EUROPE
thank you and thanks to you at
  • home for joining us this hour really
  • happy to have you here so much to get to
  • so naturally we are going to start with
  • this car
  • sales in
  • France are way down uh year-over-year
  • car sales for whatever reason are way
  • down in France down by
  • 6% um I don't know exactly why that's
  • happening or what it means if anything
  • big picture I presume it probably sucks

  • Tesla car sales in France

  • 4:00
  • for people who sell cars for a living in
  • France um but you know who it really
  • really sucks for it really sucks for
  • Tesla because while car sales in France
  • are down by
  • 6% sales of Teslas in France are down by
  • 63% not 6% but 63% ooo I wonder why that
  • is France is the second largest market
  • for electric car cars in all of Europe
  • so that's that's really bad for Tesla
  • down
  • 63% the only country in Europe that is a
  • larger market than France is Germany in
  • Germany Tesla sales are down
  • 59% in Sweden Tesla sales are down
  • 44% in Norway Tesla sales are down 38%
  • in the Netherlands Tesla sales are down
  • 42% weird right I wonder why that is

  • 5:01
  • here on this side of the Atlantic new
  • polling from The Economist and yugov
  • looks at how Americans feel about the
  • CEO of Tesla and specifically his
  • involvement in the US government now
  • after he spent so much money to get
  • Donald Trump elected to the presidency
  • uh Economist in yugov took two polls one
  • right after the election and another one
  • this week now that Trump's been in
  • office for a couple of weeks and look at
  • this among Republican voters
  • specifically the proportion of people
  • who wanted Elon Musk to have quote a lot
  • of influence in the US government since
  • the election it has plummeted by 21
  • points we're now down to only about one
  • in four Republicans wants Elon Musk to
  • have a lot of involvement in the US
  • government that is just dropped like a
  • stone in a very quick period of
  • time among all other Americans who
  • aren't Republicans uh um the proportion

  • 6:00
  • of Americans who like the idea of Elon
  • Musk having a lot of influence in the
  • government that proportion among
  • Americans who are Democrats is 6% the
  • proportion among Americans who are
  • Independents is
  • 6%
  • 6% I mean he's poing at like tooth decay
  • levels right that's like Funny Bone
  • banged into something sharp levels
  • yesterday around noon time it was 15
  • degrees in Waterville Maine uh and it
  • was Breezies two degrees Fahrenheit with
  • the wind chill but you know what
  • temperatures like that that's nothing
  • for the good hearty people of the state
  • of Maine a number of whom felt inspired
  • even in that weather to go down to one
  • of the busiest intersections in
  • Waterville Maine to go hold a bunch of
  • signs and demonstrate at the Tesla
  • charging station in their town the
  • Waterville Morning Sentinel reported on
  • the protest including at least one local

  • 7:02
  • resident uh who saw the protest when she
  • was driving by she pulled over parked
  • jumped out of her car and decided to
  • join
  • them around the same time that was
  • happening up in Maine down in DC at the
  • Department of Labor uh this was
  • happening um a a short notice protest
  • and kind of a big one at the US
  • Department of Labor at their
  • headquarters
  • building now you might remember
  • yesterday
  • there was a lot of competition for your
  • attention if you were interested in
  • protesting there were protests in all 50
  • states all around the country including
  • uh really big ones at places like the
  • Texas state capital and uh Sacramento
  • California yesterday even just in DC
  • there was also a big protest um in
  • Washington just outside the capital for
  • for foreign aid and to stand up for usid
  • but in addition to all of that there was
  • also this one at the labor department
  • and again this was scrambled together on

  • 8:00
  • really short notice and it was scrambled
  • together on short notice specifically
  • because Elon Musk was
  • coming people who work at the labor
  • department and people who support them
  • and who wanted to stand up for them uh
  • flooded down to the labor department to
  • head off Elon Musk when they got word
  • that Mr musk and his little band of
  • teenage flying monkeys that he's been
  • bringing around from government agency
  • to government agency ripping out the
  • guts of the computer systems uh when
  • people found out that they were on their
  • way next to the Francis Perkins building
  • to the Labor Department headquarters
  • yesterday in Washington people just ran
  • down there turned out in force in person
  • on no notice to go try to stop them now
  • this is interesting we don't know for
  • sure if it was that you know musk and
  • his gang pulled up at the Francis
  • Perkins building and saw the crowd
  • outside we don't know if it was some
  • other reason but that reported next stop

  • 9:01
  • on Elon musk's itinerary yesterday
  • afternoon did not
  • happen it appears that that protest
  • turned musk and his little group of guys
  • turned them around and they did not get
  • into the labor department systems
  • yesterday even though they were
  • scheduled to be
  • there at the same time that was
  • happening democracy forward went to
  • court and filed a lawsuit to block Elon
  • Musk and his Freshman 15 from
  • accessing data and systems at the
  • Department of
  • Labor so we had sort of a one-two punch
  • yesterday you had the physical direct
  • action of people turning up for that
  • protest at the labor department which
  • appears to have sort of physically
  • turned Elon Musk back along with his
  • folks but you also had a court
  • order produced by that lawsuit later
  • that afternoon which kept them legally
  • blocked from getting into the labor
  • department as well
  • so the labor department appears thus far

  • 10:02
  • to have escaped what they've been able
  • to do to lots of other
  • agencies and they appear to have escaped
  • that fate thus far by defending
  • themselves I mean in the grand scheme of
  • things this is what's called making
  • yourself a hard target right making
  • yourself as annoying as possible to go
  • after you know in that so folks Donald
  • and Elon are pissed at each other
  • because they are two men that hate
  • sharing the spotlight and so Elon is so
  • duded that he thinks to himself I'm more
  • important than the president of the
  • United States and Donald is so
  • egotistical that even when he has a
  • crony like Elon doing everything he
  • wants it's still not enough because he's
  • taking the spotlight and they're also
  • getting each other into trouble Elon was
  • supposed to just you know give a few
  • ideas here and there and not cause a
  • mess give Donald the money post on his
  • massive social media platforms and that

  • 11:02
  • was it but now he wants to be the
  • important man in the room and he brings
  • a bunch of loser kids involved and
  • there's already massive scandals not
  • only about what Elon is doing and not
  • doing but also who he's employing
  • unqualified people with racist views and
  • things like that and Donald is like
  • we're two weeks in and there's already
  • these massive scandals that wouldn't be
  • happening if I didn't have a nut job
  • like Elon Running part of my schemes if
  • I had an actual person that knew what
  • the frig they were doing and Elon is mad
  • now because as we see there his work
  • with Donald is costing him billions and
  • billions and billions of dollars Elon
  • didn't sign up for that here's the thing
  • about
  • billionaires they can give dirty sums of
  • money hundreds of billions potentially
  • to a politician and still come out ahead
  • with the tax cuts and the giveaways and
  • the regul

  • 12:00
  • deregulation and all of that but that's
  • not happening for Elon his involvement
  • and being tied to such a monster like
  • Trump is costing him everything they are
  • at each other's throats
