THE COFFEE KLATCH ... JANUARY 11th 2025 Robert Reich, Heather Lofthouse and Michael Lahanas-Calderon The First Felon President Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5c3-zaVzU0 Peter Burgess COMMENTARY This is a good conversation, though the subjects are difficult. The Los Angeles' wildfire disasters features on this video as the #1 subject. I find it difficult to imagine the scale of this event and the impact it is having right now ... and the impacts it will have going a long time into the future. It raises all sorts of questions about the performance of society's leadership over the past many years and the huge stress that exists between nature and human society and the built environment. Fire has existed in nature since the beginning of time. Forest fires were something of an issue when I first came to Canada in 1960, more than 60 years ago. Several of my 20 year old contemporaries did summer jobs in Canada ... British Columbia ... as 'look-outs' for emerging forest fires, something that I could never imagine growing up in the UK. A few years later when I first came to the USA and lived in Connecticut I joined the volunteer fire department. During this time, I took part in fighting a tiny grass fire in the local community, and experrienced the smoke associated with the work. I could not handle the discomfort, and when we moved, did not join the volunteer fire department in the new place! I cannot imagine the scale of the LA fires and the economic and social damage that has taken place! The discussion about the Trump saga in this episode of the Coffee Klutch has me raging at the idea that Trump and Musk have any role in serious leadership in the USA ... and potentially in the world. Has the world gone 'mad'? My answer for this question is 'YES' and the 'buffoons' that are going to be running the world quite soon need to be 'defanged' as quickly as possible ... though I have no idea how this can be done! The discussion about 'tech oligarchs' is very timely and raises all sorts of questions about how humankind has been 'running the world' for centuries ... and how it really is not 'fit for purpose' especially with a huge human population of around 8 billion people, up from less than 2 billion just a hundred years ago ... the world population was just 1.7 billion, I think, as recently as 1900!
