I am an avid 'News Consumer' and at the present time, my 'go to' news channel is the PBS Newshour in the US, the BBC in the Uk and DW in Germany. There is a lot of reliable ... reasonably reliable ... news that is generally accessible, though this is not as 'solid' as it was back in the days of Walter Kronkite and later Dan Rather!
What is depressing is that while the 'technology' has improved enormously over the past 50 years, the 'substance' of what is in the news has become substantially degraded.
As a consumer of news, it would appear that 'news' now functions as a 'profit center' the same as everything else in the corporate world.
I spent about 20 years of my adult career working to improve 'corporate profitability' and am very proud of the profit improvement I was able to achieve in various jobs that I have done over the years.
But there is more to corporate performance than simply 'profit outcome'. I started to work on the development of a system of 'Better Metrics' almost 50 years ago. I am now 85 years old, and the system is far from complete and ready for prime time. BUT ... my work is heading in the right direction, and the technology to make it work is now available.
One of the elements that is needed is an active 'feedback' and 'pushback' on news that is superficial or in some cases 'just plain wrong'.
For me ... reporting on stock market prices and national GDP is an area that should have been upgraded decades ago. Heaveny forbid ... it was an issue when I was at Cambridge in the late 1950s!
