I took sports very seriously when I was at school, university and as a young person under 30! Specifically, I played rugby and cricket ... as an amateur but taking these games very seriously!
My father also had taken sports seriously during his life ... he played rugby for Yorkshire when he was still a schoolboy and was captain of the Preston Grasshoppers for a number of years in the early 1930s. When he moved to the London area in his late 20s, he became captain of the Richmond rugby team. Though my father played Rugby at a high level for many years, he did not play for England. He did, however, play for the 'Barbarians' a team that pulled mainly from international players ... something of an honour at the time.
Though I had a good schoolboy rugby career ... playing for Blundell's School team and for my college at Cambridge. I was a 'full-back' at school and college which was unfortunate. The full-back for the University of Cambridge was an internatonal player from Scotland, and the fullback for my college was also the captain of the college team and a year ahead of me ... which at the eime was essentially three years ahead of me in age and experience! (This was because 'national service' was ending, and I arrived at the University as an 18 year old, while students older than me did two years of national service and arrived as 20 year olds. Nevertheless, I did get to play for the college quite frequently, and toured with the college team once to the Channel Islands and once to France during the winter breaks!
I never became a big sports spectator, though I have attended a few major sporting events over the years. I am not a big fan of sporting 'professionals' though I understand the incentives at play.
The issues are complex ... and important. I will address them in due course. Some of the trands have been good ... others not so good!
