  • now we've got independent candidate for
  • the US Senate in Nebraska Dan Osborne
  • Dan thanks so much for joining me hey
  • thanks for having me on this race is
  • primed to be the upset of the election
  • cycle there's always one it is very
  • likely looking like it's going to be
  • this race what is the state of your race
  • and how does an independent candidate
  • with no resources from one of the two
  • major political parties end up
  • potentially unseating a Republican
  • senator in a Republican
  • state yeah well the the state of the
  • race right now is we're TI you know
  • there's
  • a independent poll shows 4747 5%
  • undecided so this is uh you know this is
  • going to come down to a few votes but
  • ultimately you know I think I think it's
  • it's well for for me and and my team
  • it's it's a lot of hard work I've done
  • over 180 publicly advertised events uh
  • we just get out there we talk to people
  • I did what what's called a what alss you
  • tour where I've got around the state and

  • 1:01
  • uh we just go into the local Watering
  • Hole we have a beer with people and we
  • just talk politics uh but ultimately I
  • would say it's it's the message you know
  • it's it's it's my message less than 2%
  • of our Our House and Senate come from
  • the working class it's a complete
  • misrepresentation of the people in my
  • state and certainly uh the country uh
  • you know I working people don't feel
  • like they're getting a fair Shake
  • they're getting abandoned by both
  • parties so
  • uh I think this is I've been called a
  • breath of fresh air which you know that
  • is what it is but it it's it's certainly
  • the the broad strr message is campaign
  • Finance reform ending citizens united
  • that states corporations are people and
  • and and money is free speech and there's
  • so much influence on our elections from
  • corporations and uh you know I haven't
  • always been a political person you know
  • it wasn't until corporate green came
  • knocking on my door in the form of

  • 2:00
  • uh the the Kellog strike you know during
  • Co we were working s days a week 12
  • hours a day that whole year no time off
  • and uh we made them record profits they
  • went from 19 billion to $21 billion the
  • CEO gave himself the $2 million raise
  • everybody enriched themselves and then
  • they tried to take from their workers at
  • the same time so we stood up four us
  • plants went out on strike for 77 days
  • and and we won a contract um so that
  • that showed me that when we stick
  • together behind issues and and causes we
  • can make a difference in regular
  • people's lives and uh I think Robin
  • Williams the comedian said it best when
  • he said our our politicians should be
  • wearing NASCAR jackets with patches of
  • their sponsors so we know how they're
  • going to vote and certainly my
  • opponent's no different but you know if
  • you're out there and you're watching
  • this my average donation Still Remains
  • $40 uh so this campaign truly is powered
  • by the people uh the way the rers of the

  • 3:00
  • Constitution intended it to be a
  • government bu and for the people you
  • know in in running largely against
  • corruption you think back to Trump's
  • 2017 tax cut which conferred 83% of its
  • benefits to the richest Americans what's
  • your reaction when you see Trump a
  • billionaire propped up by Elon Musk a
  • billionaire advocating for an agenda
  • where yet again they can pass tax cuts
  • where the benefits would overwhelmingly
  • favor the richest Americans yeah you
  • know I'm I'm always going to be for the
  • little guy uh you know we're we're
  • seeing what we're seeing right now and I
  • I'll I'll like it to uh the farm bill
  • the farm bill favors corporate farming
  • uh not the smaller family farmers and
  • ranchers which is I think the the
  • backbone especially of a in my state and
  • we see people playing Party politics
  • with it not I mean the Farmville expired
  • September 30th it's on extension from
  • 2018 so our our our bean prices our
  • bushel prices are our in crop insurance

  • 4:00
  • it's out of date and our farmers are
  • going to start to suffer and you know
  • that's that's what's so frustrating to
  • me uh you know with
  • politics it's all about control right
  • now instead of actually just working for
  • the American people and speaking about
  • Farmers we've heard a lot about tariffs
  • it it it hearkens back to uh Trump's
  • first Administration where he launched
  • the trade war against China which
  • obviously impacted the farmers what do
  • you think when you hear that that the
  • main economic tool that he would wield
  • would yet again be tariffs as it relates
  • to these Farmers yeah you got to be
  • careful with tariffs uh I don't I don't
  • rule terorist out as an option um when
  • when dealing with trade uh certainly the
  • American worker and the American Farmer
  • is always going to be on the Forefront
  • of my mind uh but you got to look ahead
  • and how tariffs can damage so broad
  • stroke tariffs are are never the answer
  • targeted tariffs uh certainly I I would
  • entertain as long as uh you know we have

  • 5:02
  • a lot of people thinking about the
  • repercussions of of what can happen
  • because a lot of times what a tariff
  • does is just comes back on the consumer
  • and uh we and and me I end up paying for
  • it and that's not the way we should be
  • doing business so you know certainly we
  • you know everybody says we have to be
  • tough on China that's what every
  • politician says what does that mean
  • though what does it mean to be tough on
  • China for me it means uh let's get our
  • manufacturing jobs back here let's win
  • in the
  • economy uh that's how we're tough on
  • China getting our jobs back getting our
  • even even our defense manufacturing back
  • here to this country and that's how we
  • went you know you've got support from a
  • pretty um diverse swath of people who
  • would you caucus with if you get elected
  • George Norris was the last independent
  • uh US senator from Nebraska he helped
  • create the nonpartisan unicam that we

  • 6:01
  • have here in Nebraska that I think DC
  • could certainly take a few notes from uh
  • but he did not caucus with either party
  • his last term and so there's some
  • precedents there I think the system
  • needs to be challenged that is why we
  • are seeing here in this state uh all
  • kinds of money coming in against me
  • because I'm challenging the status quo
  • the status quo does not like to be
  • challenged uh but I'm not afraid of
  • money I'm not afraid of of the
  • corporations because you know during
  • strike of Kelloggs they spent over $700
  • million to try to break the union and
  • they failed because we stood up and we
  • had solidarity as people and uh still
  • you know the corporations they have the
  • influence they have the money they can
  • try to rig elections but we as people
  • still have the power with our vote if it
  • does come down to you to decide whether
  • Mitch McConnell or you well I guess
  • Mitch McConnell is outgoing but
  • Republican uh a republican becomes the

  • 7:01
  • Senate Majority Leader or a Democrat
  • becomes the Senate Majority Leader um I
  • guess I guess what would you do in that
  • instance yeah well you know I I I tend
  • not to deal in hypotheticals uh you know
  • we got five days to win an election
  • that's certainly what I'm focused on I'm
  • not a I'm not a political analyst uh I
  • haven't actually really been a political
  • guy until corporate Greek came knocking
  • on my door three years ago uh what I'm
  • concerned about what I'm going to do
  • uh if I'm elected into the into the
  • halls of power I am going to face every
  • every uh issue in every policy based
  • objectively on my experiences as a guy
  • who's worked 70 hours a week uh not
  • based off of who's giving me handouts
  • certainly uh because I don't take
  • corporate money I'm not I don't want to
  • be a part of that world I just want to
  • work for the people in Nebraska so
  • that's going to be on the Forefront of
  • my mind because that's who's going to
  • elect me if I get elected is the people

  • 8:02
  • on Nebraska so I want to do what's right
  • by them how I'm going to operate how I'm
  • going to navigate those Waters all
  • certainly have to figure that out as I
  • go but I'm always going to have the
  • people on the Forefront of my mind
  • obviously running against a sitting
  • Republican senator in Deb Fisher the
  • Republicans are worried now what have
  • their most potent attacks against you
  • what have they been and what's your
  • response to them yeah you know they're
  • they're painting me out to be this
  • radical uh liberal and they've they've
  • tied they tried to tie me to Bernie
  • Sanders uh here's the thing during the
  • strike at Kelloggs the friends of Bernie
  • Sanders which I'm assuming that's a pack
  • gave a check to our our members for
  • $25,000 uh to put food on our tables in
  • the time that you know we weren't we
  • weren't we weren't getting a paycheck
  • and uh so that made me take notice and I
  • and I you you know Bernie Sanders had

  • 9:00
  • tweeted some things about positively
  • about our strik go I've retweeted those
  • so they they use these things and then
  • they they turn me into something that
  • I'm
  • not uh and you know that that's what
  • because that's what they have and I I
  • suppose I I I get it but uh I think
  • they're going so extreme I don't think
  • the people in Nebraska are stupid and
  • they're certainly not buying it are you
  • hearing from any lifelong rep an on the
  • campaign tra yeah you know my biggest my
  • biggest donor is a republican uh him and
  • his wife maxed out double maxed uh 3
  • 3300 pre-primary 3300 as the federal you
  • know max out uh States uh General so
  • collectively you know
  • $6,600 for from each of them it's
  • because of my stance on right to repair
  • you know he owns a kefa business that he
  • refurbishes e fobs and sells it back to

  • 10:00
  • people 10 times less than you get it
  • from the uh manufacturer right and
  • so that's that's one of the things that
  • and that's what I've done right that's
  • why I'm being successful because 180
  • publicly advertised events I focused on
  • issues I we don't focus on the top of
  • the ticket I don't even like to use the
  • word Republican and Democrat rooms
  • because as soon as that happens people
  • like they start arguing but then I bring
  • it back to the issues and when we talk
  • about issues we as people uh on either
  • side of the aisle we we all starting
  • nding our heads together and we're
  • agreeing like yep these are the issues
  • this is how we fix it and people come up
  • with ideas that's how I've learned
  • everything that I know about politics is
  • from visiting with people every day and
  • what they need in their perspective
  • field and what issue is important to
  • them so that's that's how I'm being
  • successful let's just let's just focus
  • on the issues and all this other white

  • 11:00
  • noise let's just let it go and just talk
  • as people and let's finish off with this
  • um you know there are obviously a lot of
  • lifelong Republicans whose whose votes
  • you'll be courting um within that
  • undecided 5% um these are people for
  • whom their political affiliation is is
  • basically their identity right like
  • political affiliation is is in often
  • times is part of somebody's whole
  • identity so it's hard to to steer away
  • from that what's your message to these
  • final 5% of undecided voters many of
  • whom may identify as Republicans who've
  • only cast ballot for Republicans how do
  • you bring them over what's your message
  • to them so that they know it's okay they
  • have some permission structure to vote
  • for you sure that's that's a great
  • question and well put uh you know I
  • drive around the state and and if if
  • nothing else at the end of the day if I
  • don't get elected what this campaign I
  • believe has done for people is has
  • brought neighbors together because you
  • drive around the state uh you can look
  • across uh the street from me and my
  • neighbor very very St watch uh for Trump

  • 12:01
  • uh he's got an osbor ins side in his
  • yard too because he knows first of all
  • who I am but you can drive around the
  • state and you will find Trump signs with
  • Osborne signs and Harris signs with
  • Osborne signs at at a time where we were
  • so divided that humbles me and that that
  • makes me so happy to be a part of this
  • movement uh you know and and being an
  • independent that we can bring people
  • together but I would say you know to
  • those folks uh who are conservative you
  • know I'll I'll if if Donald Trump gets
  • elected I will work with him to secure
  • the Border uh to help you know clean up
  • corruption in in Washington DC and and
  • if Harris gets elected I I'll do the
  • same thing but uh I'll work with with
  • anyone but again for for me the people
  • in Nebraska sit at my heart and soul and
  • Veterans sit at my heart and soul and
  • that's who I'm going to work for Dam we
  • got a couple days left here how can
  • people best help your campaign yeah I

  • 13:00
  • would I would say uh you know I
  • mentioned my average donation is $40 so
  • uh you know we need to get on the radio
  • we need to get my message out uh there's
  • been a lot of money getting spent
  • against me right now uh pay me out to be
  • somebody I'm not so I have to defend
  • myself so you could go to Osborne for
  • sener that's osbn without any I'm not
  • related to the coach the famous coach in
  • Nebraska uh but yeah you go to osbor for
  • s
  • um and just throw me some support and uh
  • let's you know we're going to make this
  • happen well again as I mentioned at the
  • top this this this can and should be the
  • upset of the Senate cycle so uh to help
  • Dan make that a reality again Osborne
  • for Senate I'll put that link right here
  • on the screen and in the post
  • description on YouTube and also in the
  • show notes for the podcast Dan thank you
  • so much for taking the time best of luck
  • in the campaign trial yeah thank you
  • appreciate it
