The various units of the British Guard are a good 'sight' when they are 'on parade', but for someone like me they are a reminder of the role the British military has played in world affairs of a very long time.
It has been 'fashionable' to criticise everything to do with 'empire' ... and especially 'British Empire' in most of my lifetime. I was born in 1940 in the early days of World War II. We lived in Surbiton, a close-in suburb of London. This was the time when the 'Battle of Britain' was fought by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) against the German Luftwaffe ... Spitfires against Messershmidts! This was alsmost two years before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour and the US declared war against the Axis Powers.
Prior to Pearl Harbour, President Rousevelt enabled material support to Britain even though the American populace was mainly in favor of doing nothing. Pearl Harbor changed that, but by then Nazi German was in control of most of Continental Europe. What I did not know until very recently is that Roosevelt's material support for Churchill and Britain had strings ... and these strings were very very onerous ... specifically that Britain would end its colonial connections in most of the world!
Given, the scale of modern misinformation, it may be that this is merely an example of AI driven computer halucination ... but it does fit my observation of history ... which, of course, is how AI and misinformation builds credibility!
I am enjoying a growing collection of video clips about the British Guards. While the sights are colorful, the precision on the parade ground is a reminder of the intense training and competence of the soldiers in time of war!
