  • it's been a very busy weekend at the
  • 0:02
  • site of the Francis Ford Key Bridge
  • 0:04
  • collapse in Baltimore as they race to
  • 0:06
  • remove all of the debris from the
  • 0:08
  • channel to try to free up that channel
  • 0:10
  • there's a large crane that they brought
  • 0:12
  • in and they started to offload some of
  • 0:15
  • those containers today so this was fresh
  • 0:17
  • video from today April 7th on Sunday
  • 0:21
  • they were working through the day
  • 0:22
  • getting these containers off and I love
  • 0:24
  • these views that they provided here with
  • 0:25
  • the drones but that barge looks like
  • 0:27
  • it's going to hold probably several
  • 0:29
  • dozen containers that they want to get
  • 0:31
  • off of the dolly ship to make it safer
  • 0:34
  • for them to remove the trusses off of
  • 0:36
  • the dolly and there's the unified
  • 0:38
  • Command Center there's a lot of people
  • 0:40
  • working there and there's some good
  • 0:42
  • close-up video that the Army Corps of
  • 0:43
  • Engineers shot showing the Four sheared
  • 0:46
  • off pillars there at the
  • 0:48
  • bridge so this was some of the clearest
  • 0:51
  • video we've seen of it so
  • 0:56
  • far and there's a close-up shot of the
  • 0:58
  • gouge taken out of the bow of the dolly
  • 1:00
  • I mean that's just unbelievable here and
  • 1:03
  • you can also see the structure there
  • 1:05
  • from the pillar that got sheared off
  • 1:07
  • look how many rebar rods are coming out
  • 1:08
  • of that
  • 1:09
  • thing yeah so we're going to show you a
  • 1:12
  • much higher resolution close-up photo of
  • 1:14
  • that later on so we can take a look at
  • 1:15
  • some of the close-up damage and on you
  • 1:18
  • know nice rainy day a few days ago they
  • 1:20
  • sent the divers down and just look at
  • 1:22
  • the equipment this poor guy has to put
  • 1:24
  • on look at that helmet that thing has to
  • 1:26
  • weigh a ton plus he's got looks like
  • 1:28
  • cameras up there and radius you see this
  • 1:30
  • umbilical cord that he has to take down
  • 1:32
  • with him he has to they got to unwrap
  • 1:33
  • and uncoil all of these cables that have
  • 1:36
  • to feed the cameras and whatever else
  • 1:38
  • he's got with him there and that's not a
  • 1:41
  • job I would want so he's going to
  • 1:44
  • come climbing down that ladder down into
  • 1:47
  • the water I don't know if it goes all
  • 1:48
  • the way to the bottom I'm assuming it
  • 1:50
  • probably does and they can only see
  • 1:52
  • about 2 or 3 feet in front of them
  • 1:54
  • because the water is just so
  • 1:56
  • unbelievably murky and you can they have
  • 2:00
  • to feed him the hoses and give him slack
  • 2:03
  • and it was nice and raining and storming
  • 2:05
  • out that day as well they have to take
  • 2:07
  • vocal commands from above listen to this
  • 2:09
  • in beyond my fingertips you get to the
  • 2:13
  • bottom so how much do you have exposed
  • 2:15
  • from the the top of the pl stand you
  • 2:20
  • can't see a thing now take a look at
  • 2:21
  • this debris that's resting upon the
  • 2:24
  • dolly cargo ship right beside it this is
  • 2:26
  • one of the better shots we've gotten of
  • 2:29
  • those four sheared off pillars that were
  • 2:32
  • holding up the bridge here's more from
  • 2:34
  • that CBC story from this vantage point
  • 2:37
  • it looks like a pile of metal spaghetti
  • 2:40
  • and remember this is just one area one
  • 2:42
  • part of the
  • 2:44
  • cleanup and this piece of metal on a
  • 2:46
  • barge it may seem small but it weighs
  • 2:49
  • 300 tons and is about to be hauled away
  • 2:53
  • it looks like metal toothpicks when you
  • 2:54
  • compare it to What's Left To Conquer
  • 2:57
  • here's some photographs they provided
  • 2:59
  • after removing some of the containers
  • 3:00
  • off the dolly ship today I mean this
  • 3:02
  • looked like it was some really dangerous
  • 3:04
  • work there but look how crushed some of
  • 3:07
  • these containers were and there's the
  • 3:10
  • Big Crane closeup shot of it and there's
  • 3:13
  • another large section of the truss
  • 3:14
  • bridge that that they brought up and set
  • 3:16
  • down and look at this we got 50,000 tons
  • 3:19
  • of steel and concrete is what they
  • 3:20
  • estimate is going to be in this whole
  • 3:22
  • debris field and it would take 3,800
  • 3:25
  • dump trucks to take it away I wonder
  • 3:26
  • who's going to pay for all of this
  • 3:29
  • there's another cool shot of the dolly
  • 3:32
  • with the bridge truss resting on it and
  • 3:34
  • a good overhead shot you can see right
  • 3:39
  • there this is the emergency boat taking
  • 3:41
  • the divers
  • 3:43
  • out and look at these uh parts of the
  • 3:46
  • road just stacked up
  • 3:48
  • there you can see they're loading up
  • 3:50
  • more debris I still don't know where all
  • 3:52
  • of this wood came from but look at this
  • 3:54
  • look how many cranes they brought in it
  • 3:56
  • looks like crane City going on up there
  • 3:58
  • in Baltimore right now more truss
  • 4:00
  • sections being placed up on the
  • 4:02
  • barges and there official from South
  • 4:05
  • Korea being escorted up onto the Del
  • 4:07
  • ship okay so now I've got the movable
  • 4:09
  • Dolly back again this is an old sonar
  • 4:12
  • image of the federal channel here going
  • 4:15
  • through underneath the Francis Scott Key
  • 4:17
  • bridge and as I've probably showed you
  • 4:20
  • before here's your four Dolphins these
  • 4:22
  • are the concrete dolphins that are
  • 4:23
  • supposed to protect it and then these
  • 4:25
  • are the four pillars and the four
  • 4:27
  • pillars here that hold up the main truss
  • 4:30
  • of the bridge here and so the dolly came
  • 4:33
  • in here like this and it scooted by and
  • 4:36
  • barely missed hitting that concrete
  • 4:37
  • dolphin and slid right into the four
  • 4:41
  • pillars and ended up right about like
  • 4:43
  • that uh somewhat blocking the channel
  • 4:45
  • here so this bluish area that you see it
  • 4:48
  • sort of looks like a relief map doesn't
  • 4:50
  • it this is the 50ft depth right here in
  • 4:53
  • the middle of the channel so the channel
  • 4:56
  • is normally about 700 ft wide and so I
  • 4:59
  • want to show you what the plan is what
  • 5:01
  • they're doing in here right now over the
  • 5:03
  • last couple of days working feverishly
  • 5:05
  • towards this end I've overlaid here for
  • 5:07
  • you the exact shape of the federal
  • 5:09
  • Channel which is also known as the Fort
  • 5:11
  • McHenry Channel and so you can see where
  • 5:14
  • the entire Channel lies in here and then
  • 5:17
  • if I make it to the top here bring it to
  • 5:20
  • the front you can see that the dolly
  • 5:23
  • ship is actually situated partially
  • 5:25
  • blocking this channel which is why you
  • 5:28
  • can never have two-way traffic going
  • 5:30
  • through here in the middle of this
  • 5:31
  • channel so what they want to do now is
  • 5:34
  • they're going to remove all of the truss
  • 5:37
  • from span 18 which is right here across
  • 5:40
  • the main part of the channel and it's
  • 5:42
  • currently sticking into the water
  • 5:43
  • they're going to pull all of it up clear
  • 5:45
  • what they can and then they want to
  • 5:47
  • stick in this alternate Channel see
  • 5:49
  • right here this limited access channel
  • 5:51
  • is what they want to add on this part of
  • 5:53
  • it and it's going to overlap as you can
  • 5:55
  • see in this zone right here it will
  • 5:57
  • overlap part of this Federal Channel and
  • 6:00
  • it will come somewhat up over here
  • 6:01
  • closer to these four pillars but if you
  • 6:04
  • look if you can see on this relief map
  • 6:06
  • shape right here it's not as deep that's
  • 6:09
  • why it's only a 35 ft deep channel that
  • 6:12
  • they plan on having here so you could
  • 6:14
  • never fit a container ship in here it
  • 6:17
  • because the draft of these container
  • 6:19
  • ships is usually like 40 to 50 feet I
  • 6:21
  • know the dolly I believe is 48 ft if I
  • 6:24
  • remember correctly so it could never fit
  • 6:26
  • in here and it barely fits in the
  • 6:28
  • federal Channel it's amazing how they
  • 6:30
  • even let it cut that close H so you know
  • 6:33
  • I just have one problem with this
  • 6:34
  • location that they chose here to put
  • 6:37
  • this limited access Lane here because
  • 6:40
  • this I think is where all of the
  • 6:42
  • construction vehicles fell down okay so
  • 6:44
  • I want to take a look here at where the
  • 6:46
  • construction vehicles were and where we
  • 6:49
  • think they landed where I think that
  • 6:50
  • they might be so this green light and
  • 6:52
  • this red light here they represent the
  • 6:54
  • center of the federal channel here the
  • 6:56
  • Fort McHenry Channel and then these
  • 6:59
  • lights right here are your construction
  • 7:01
  • vehicles and I want you to pay special
  • 7:03
  • attention to them watch them closely so
  • 7:06
  • there's the bird starting to go down
  • 7:08
  • right there now watch the the vehicles
  • 7:11
  • where they're
  • 7:12
  • at see that so right now they're still
  • 7:16
  • all lined up here they haven't fallen
  • 7:19
  • off the bridge or anything yet and right
  • 7:22
  • here the first Vehicles here second
  • 7:25
  • third and fourth is right here they're
  • 7:27
  • they're all still here they're still on
  • 7:29
  • the bridge they haven't fallen yet and
  • 7:32
  • then so watch what the road does this is
  • 7:34
  • the roadway and keep in mind the
  • 7:36
  • vehicles are still right there they
  • 7:38
  • haven't fallen yet so now they're
  • 7:42
  • basically forced underwater just because
  • 7:44
  • this part of the road has gone down and
  • 7:47
  • presumably it's about 50 ft right
  • 7:49
  • here because that's the right side of
  • 7:52
  • the center of the channel so it looks
  • 7:56
  • like in my opinion all of the vehicles
  • 7:59
  • should have been found by now on the
  • 8:03
  • right side of the channel now it could
  • 8:06
  • be that the vehicles are under several
  • 8:08
  • feet of mck they did say in some places
  • 8:10
  • the mud is like 10 ft deep now and when
  • 8:12
  • everything came crashing down it
  • 8:14
  • probably created a whole lot of mud that
  • 8:16
  • settled on top of it and because the
  • 8:18
  • visibility is so low in there right now
  • 8:21
  • they can't see 2 feet in front of them
  • 8:23
  • and even the sonar that I showed you the
  • 8:25
  • other day makes it really difficult for
  • 8:27
  • them to determine what's what right now
  • 8:31
  • so it was amazing that they were able to
  • 8:32
  • find the first two bodies the day after
  • 8:35
  • it happened and then they found another
  • 8:36
  • body yesterday the unified command sent
  • 8:39
  • out a press release yesterday on
  • 8:40
  • Saturday stating that they found the
  • 8:42
  • third body okay so here it's going to be
  • 8:45
  • basically any other ship other than the
  • 8:47
  • big draft ships so you have to have a
  • 8:49
  • draft below 35 ft on your ship in order
  • 8:52
  • to get through this limited access
  • 8:54
  • Channel this will be by the end of April
  • 8:58
  • 2024
  • 9:00
  • and then by the end of May they expect
  • 9:02
  • to have this entire Channel back open
  • 9:04
  • and hopefully the dolly ship will be
  • 9:06
  • gone by then as well and the Army Corps
  • 9:09
  • of Engineers gave us this infographic
  • 9:12
  • here which pretty much shows you what I
  • 9:13
  • just showed you but it's their Salvage
  • 9:16
  • plan coming up over the next couple of
  • 9:19
  • months so it looks like by the end of
  • 9:21
  • May they want to have this entire
  • 9:22
  • Channel cleared and this is what it
  • 9:24
  • looks like here there there's your
  • 9:26
  • limited access on the right the gold
  • 9:28
  • color and then the red is the other half
  • 9:31
  • of the federal Channel and they've
  • 9:33
  • already got the other two channels set
  • 9:35
  • up for the just the barges now I want
  • 9:37
  • you to take a look at these photos that
  • 9:38
  • were submitted to me by one of our
  • 9:40
  • subscribers Larry Bannerman who went on
  • 9:42
  • a Carnival Cruise to the Bahamas in 2018
  • 9:45
  • and passed under the Francis Scott Key
  • 9:47
  • bridge here in Baltimore and he took
  • 9:49
  • these pictures of it as they were going
  • 9:51
  • underneath so it was good to see some of
  • 9:53
  • these unique views that we don't
  • 9:55
  • normally see of the bridge and
  • 9:58
  • especially how it's attached to the
  • 10:00
  • towers there and I don't believe we've
  • 10:03
  • ever seen an under the bridge view like
  • 10:05
  • this one before either so thanks Larry
  • 10:08
  • for sending us these
  • 10:11
  • photos now I want to show you some great
  • 10:14
  • high resolution zoom in on the damage
  • 10:16
  • that was done to the bow of the dolly
  • 10:18
  • and of course here's the DA for Dolly
  • 10:21
  • right there but look at this if you zoom
  • 10:23
  • all the way in here it was just ripped
  • 10:25
  • open like a can of tuna fish as you can
  • 10:28
  • see here and you can see all the way
  • 10:29
  • into the lower decks there's looks like
  • 10:31
  • a support column and that's the skeletal
  • 10:34
  • structure for the deck the man
  • 10:38
  • incredible how it just ripped that
  • 10:39
  • gaping hole right into it there and then
  • 10:43
  • this is part of the road hanging down
  • 10:45
  • there's your rebar rods and here's more
  • 10:47
  • sections of the roadway over here that
  • 10:51
  • came down along with the bridge
  • 10:54
  • trust so if you see anything
  • 10:56
  • recognizable on here any equipment that
  • 10:59
  • jumps out at you hey just let us know in
  • 11:01
  • the comments
  • 11:05
  • below and then I want to show you the
  • 11:07
  • other shot which is a little bit more
  • 11:09
  • wide angle that shows
  • 11:11
  • some detail from a slightly different
  • 11:14
  • Viewpoint here so I wanted to have you
  • 11:17
  • take a look in here and tell me what you
  • 11:19
  • see here like we got this here that I
  • 11:21
  • think this might have been up on the
  • 11:22
  • deck and this here looks like where the
  • 11:25
  • anchor chain is reeled up you can see
  • 11:27
  • that right there and then and as we
  • 11:29
  • scoot over here you can see this was one
  • 11:32
  • of the four pillars that was knocked
  • 11:34
  • over now if you look closely it looks
  • 11:36
  • like the pillow when it came crashing
  • 11:38
  • down sliced halfway down the side of the
  • 11:42
  • dolly so I don't know if there's any
  • 11:44
  • water in any of the compartments inside
  • 11:46
  • they haven't said that there really is
  • 11:48
  • any major flooding in there so we don't
  • 11:50
  • know and I'm assuming the fact that they
  • 11:52
  • haven't abandoned the ship means that
  • 11:54
  • they're probably okay it's not taking on
  • 11:57
  • water but look at at just how much rebar
  • 12:00
  • is in one of these pillars and this is
  • 12:03
  • probably pretty thick it's deceivingly
  • 12:06
  • this is deceivingly spindly looking but
  • 12:08
  • it it really isn't I'm willing to bet
  • 12:10
  • that that's probably at least a foot
  • 12:13
  • thick and then one other thing too if
  • 12:15
  • you notice this bridge here the the
  • 12:17
  • trusses on this entire Bridge actually
  • 12:22
  • held up pretty good they held their
  • 12:23
  • ground and specifically I want to call
  • 12:26
  • your attention to the gusset plates now
  • 12:29
  • they seem to be random and all over the
  • 12:30
  • place these gusset plates really held in
  • 12:32
  • there pretty good and in in many of
  • 12:35
  • these cases it's like the member bent
  • 12:37
  • but the gusset plate stood its ground so
  • 12:40
  • kudos to all these guys that did all of
  • 12:42
  • these riveting and got this bridge welld
  • 12:44
  • designed and wellb built because the
  • 12:47
  • trust sections here specifically this is
  • 12:50
  • from section 18 and these basically just
  • 12:54
  • fell
  • 12:55
  • intact these things were built for tough
  • 12:59
  • and then as we look over here at the
  • 13:01
  • containers look here's some of the
  • 13:03
  • smaller ones stacked up on top these
  • 13:05
  • some of these just got crushed and then
  • 13:07
  • this one here has a big gouge in
  • 13:10
  • it and big dents here so you can see why
  • 13:13
  • um probably within a few days they
  • 13:15
  • should have most of these offloaded off
  • 13:18
  • of the
  • 13:20
  • dolly now I want to show you some
  • 13:23
  • footage here that was shot by Channel 2
  • 13:26
  • w m r ABC in the Baltimore area and look
  • 13:29
  • at that hey there's that JG lift that
  • 13:31
  • they were using there I used to rent
  • 13:33
  • that cherry picker I recognized it right
  • 13:35
  • away for the orange and yellow colors
  • 13:37
  • and there's their shot of the cranes
  • 13:40
  • that were brought in so far only one
  • 13:42
  • piece has been removed we saw it sitting
  • 13:45
  • on a barge today waiting to be taken to
  • 13:46
  • a disposal site that piece weighs 200
  • 13:49
  • tons underneath all of that wreckage
  • 13:52
  • below the surface of the river divers
  • 13:54
  • are still searching by the way just as a
  • 13:56
  • reminder for you if you haven't seen
  • 13:59
  • this video here on the FIU bridge
  • 14:01
  • collapse you got to check it out it's
  • 14:02
  • one of my best engineering analysis
  • 14:04
  • videos yet and then last week we had
  • 14:06
  • this scary crane collapse right here in
  • 14:08
