There was a time when I travelled extensively in different trouble spots around the world. I did this in connection with consulting assignments for organizations like the World Bank and the United Nations.
It concerns me that many of the issues that were being addressed back in the 1980s and the 1990s have become significantly worse during the last two decades.
The reasons for this are not well understood. Modern domestic politics in many countries and the understanding of geopolitics is such that many global issues have been avoided until a lot of damage is done.
For me ... the issue of growing national poverty around the world is a big concern. The 'rich' countries have been 'doing all right' for the past several decades, but not the rest of the world which has been becoming more and more poor. The old 'colonial' nations are no longer supporting their one-time colonies in the way they once did, and many of these countries are unable to help themselves very much and in many cases they are now run by incompetent and corrupt political hacks or military brass!
While there was a lot wrong with the old colonial world order, it has become farily clear that the new world order is actually considerably worse in many countries, including some very significant countries.
The people of several rich major powers need to understand what is going on and take steps to address a multitude of issues.
Europe
Europe was pushed out of much of the world in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s as a wave of anti-colonial populism took hold. While some of this was reasonable, the vacuum left behind has been filled by something that is likely to be much worse
United States
The USA has never been a supporter of European style colonialism and to the extent that is has engaged in international development it has been excessively commercial and in its own economic interest. But the USA has made things worse by leading with the military rather than wirh economics and diplomacy in almost every international confrontation.
Russia
Russia has been on the wrong side of history for most of the time since the end of WWII. Putin has doubled down on Russian weakness expecting it to become a winning hand. Sadly ... the West is unpopular in many countries around the world, and Putin has more traction than I would have expected.
China
China has become the biggest economy in the world over the past 40 years and dominates world trade. It has growing military capacity but remains small compared to the USA. Taiwan is a likely flash-point which both China and the uSA probablyt both want to avoid. China has significant domestic challenges in its economy ... but its global network of resouces links has become impressive.
