The B-52 is an awesome aircraft which first flew more than 50 years ago. Obviously almost everything about the aircraft has been upgraded over the years but at its core ir is the same amazing piece of military hardware.
The need for some show of force by the USA and allies in the Middle East at the present time is relatively clear ... but the B52 may be too obviously bluster rather than serious substance.
While I do not know a lot about the Houthis I do have a bit of background about Yemen where they are located. A company I worked for ... Continental Seafoods (CSF) ... conducted a shrimp fisheries survey with two trawlers based in Hodieda in what was then the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR). Subsequently after I left CSF I was recruited by the World Bank to review the state of fisheries in the YAR and also in the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) which afforded me the opportunity to review all the fisheries related activities along the whole of the coastline.
My involvement with Yemen lasted from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Subsequently YAR and PDRY merged into one Nation ... but underlying tribal competition remained an unresolved issue,together with power and corruption. I know Saudi Arabia has been engaged in air strikes into Yemen for several years, but it seems to have strengthened rather than weakened the opposing factions.
I recall when I was working in Yemen with the World Bank, being given a document to read by way of briefing me on some of the prevailing issues. It was a about 5 pahes long written by a retiring British civil servant who had worked in Aden for upwards of 30 years. He described the tribal competition in detail ... in a way that has been completely missing in the briefings I have been given during my own work in the modern post-colonial world. It is really no wonder that the big and powerful nations seem to go from one international crisis to another while never actually solving very much before moving on.
My knowledge of the Middle East is fairly limited ... but it is probably better than many of the experts located in the capital cities of big and powerful countries. This is a srious weakness and difficult to address effectively. Better ... or more .. academic education is probably not the answer. Rather more people in positions of government power need to have spent a lot more time in a variety of field positions where they have the chance to see more real issues and get to understand the complexities more deeply.
And I should perhaps add that while there are some times when a military response is called for ... it should reflect the failure of a serious diplomatic effort to resolve issues ahead of any need to get military power involved. Serious diplomacy seems to be almost totally missing for reasons that I cannot understand ... or perhaps I do understand but feel the need to stay quiet!
