This is a fascinating documentary. I did not learn much about Turkey during my very British education, but when I was commuting from the USA to Kazakhstan in the mid 1990s I became much more interested in the history of Turkey and its role in the ancient world ... which in turn informs what we need to know about modern Turkey.
First ... my work in Kazakhstan on behalf of USAID and the World Bank gave me the opportunity to see Turkish contractors in action. Turkey had a significant presence in Kazakhstan doing most of the major construction works. My travel to Kazakhstan was via British Airways from New York to Istanbul via London and then Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to Almaty.
I had been aware that there was a massive migrant work force from Turkey working in Germany and other part of the EU, but I was less aware of the role that Turkish contractors were playing in a place like Kazakhstan.
This video is a valuable reminder of history and the evolution of power over the centuries.
Part of my 'take' on this video, is how power ebbs and flows over time ... and how quality of life in the here and now is incredibly valuable!
