MEDIA
ALL THE WRONG DRIVERS !!!! TLDR Business: Why CNN is in Major Trouble Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S22DpgWbE5w Peter Burgess COMMENTARY The 'media' industry is very important, but it is also in deep trouble. Very little of the prevailing 'business model' in the media industry is fit for purpose and CNN is in the middle of the turmoil. It is perhaps appropriate to remember that the 'media' ... the press ... has been a central part of a healthy democracy since antiquity. The media is an essential part of 'accountability' in government. Powerful politicians rarely 'like' the media, but most serious politicians have some respect for the role that the media needs to play in a vibrant democracy. Whether ot not this foundational idea is embraced by modern politicians and the business elite is an open question ... and this CNN story suggests that the media as an industry and as an essential part of democracy is on very shaky ground. One of the issues that has been bothering me for quite a long time is that big multi-brand organizations are now in control of very big parts of the economy. This means that most of the tools of 'accountability' simply do not work at the present time as they did in the past. I remember when CNN started. I was able to listen to CNN in the middle of Africa during the Gulf War of 1991 and remember observing that this had huge potential for a better informed world. In many ways the world is better informed, but at the same time there are all sorts of flows of misinformation that are having way too much influence and as well an excessive focus on the use of media simply as a source of profit and perhaps also power!
