Burgess COMMENTARY
Putin's invasion of Ukraine has been very effective in getting Europe and the broader Western world to revisit its security posture and economic risks. The assumption that there would be peace in Europe in perpetuity has been rudely shaken.
WWII changed geopolitics in a major way and it resulted in a more peaceful Europe than there had been before the war. Not everything was smooth, but things were a lot better than they had been before, and some major steps were taken to manage conflict and international disputes ... notably, the UN, the EU, and NATO.
Since WWII, the power and influence of the Soviet Union has waned and that of China has increased. European colonial or imperial influence has declined and been replaced by a world order that is more complex but maybe not altogether beneficial for the people in these newly (mainly since the 1950s and 60s) independent countries. The Russian Federation is geographically big like Canada, with a much larger population of around 140 million, and a relatively small industrial base with the exception of fossil fuel energy. It has a large nuclear missile stockpile and a numerically large military. Whether the military is strong depends on how this is assessed ... and how much issues like corruption have diminished its apparent numerical power.
In any event, the free Western world is taking steps to make sure that it can face off against Putin's Russian Federation and win !!!!!!!!
