Russia invades Ukraine

From Simon Baptist ... chief economist

February 25th 2022 ... 9:04 AM

The crisis in Ukraine, which has been building for months, entered a new phase this week as Russia overtly sent troops into Ukrainian territory, and fighting moved beyond the previous line of control near the cities of Luhansk and Donetsk. It is still unclear where the rapidly evolving situation will lead, but it is certainly towards the more pessimistic end of our forecasts, as we had not expected an invasion beyond the eastern region of Ukraine, which has effectively been under Russian control for many years.

This could turn into a bloody conflict, with grave consequences for both sides. Given the modernisation of the Ukrainian army since 2014, and a commitment by ordinary Ukrainians to fight, Ukraine is a serious adversary. Such a war would result in economic recession in Ukraine and possibly Russia, currency collapse and disruption to regional and global trade (notably for oil). It would also have a far-reaching impact on the global economy and major humanitarian consequences.
