TRANSPARENCY
ACCOUNTABILITY Progressive Democrats of America Town Hall: The Case of Julian Assange Burgess COMMENTARY This is an impressive presentation. There are one or two times when I don't agree with what is being said, but most of the time, the presentation is solid. Specifically, I don't agree with the characterization of the First Gulf War. I had worked in Kuwait during the 1980s and learned something of local tensions involving both Iran and Iraq. There was a disputed area of land between Iraq and Kuwait that was expected to be the subject of armed conflict at some point in time ... this is the Bubiyan Island which is part of Kuwait, but claimed by Iraq. When Iraq attecked Kuwait it did not only take Bubiyan, but took all of Kuwait including Kuwait City. In my view. President Bush (41) did an impressive job pulling together a wide coalition of nations together in opposition to what Iraq had done ... and eventually Desert Storm was launched and the Iraq army removed from Kuwait. President Bush only pushed the Iraq army out of Kuwait. He did not follow the retreating Iraq all the way into Iraq and destroy them, but stopped as soon as they were out of Kuwait. At the time, many in the USA wanted him to destroy the Iraq army, but President Bush showed restraint in a very appropriate way. This is not what seemed to be the story per the PDA presenters in this webinar!!! Peter Burgess | |||||||||
